The Republic of Peru and Latin America's development bank CAF have signed a loan contract for US$ 150 million to finance the Major Hydraulic Works of the Third Phase of the Chavimochic Project in the country's northern La Libertad region.

The Peruvian experience with PPPs has been notably positive, and every day it grows more sophisticated and more decentralized, with more communities involved. Peru need not mess with a good thing and ought to target more collaboration with the private sector, so that together can achieve to close the infrastructure gap.

The Peruvian economy is booming. In 2013, the country's economy grew by 5.02%, and Bloomberg recently ranked Peru as one of the top countries in Latin America for business.

Agriculture


Peruvian exports of quinoa to Brasil were valued at US$1,5 million between January and February 2014, representing the total amount of shipments sent to the South America's giant last year, Peru's Embassy to Brasil reported Monday.  

Mining & Energy


Workers at Glencore Xstrata's Tintaya-Antapaccay copper mine in the Peruvian Andes have launched a 48-hour strike to demand a bigger share of profit, the union said on Monday.

The deposit that produced 151,200 tonnes of copper last year is operating normally, a Peru-based Glencore spokesman said.



The Graystone Company announced today that the Company's mining operations generated approximately 580 grams of gold during the initial three weeks of March 2014.  This represents the best month of production in the Company's history; nearly, doubling the previous record.

Environment


According to a new ranking published by the Environmental Justice Atlas, Peru is the tenth most environmentally conflicted country in the world.

India, with 112 conflicts, far outpaces even the second-place country, Colombia, where there are 72 environmental conflicts. Rounding out the top ten are Brazil and Nigeria with 58, Ecuador with 48, Turkey with 45, the United States with 34, Spain with 33, Argentina with 32, and Peru with 31. Chile is close behind in 11th place, with 30 conflicts recorded by the Environmental Justice Atlas.

Diplomacy


Technical delegations from Peru and Chile are gathered in Lima to evaluate the draft containing the precise coordinates of the two countries' new maritime boundary, as requested in the verdict handed down by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).  



A representative from the United Nations' cultural organization highlighted Peru's work in raising awareness about the illegal trade of cultural artifacts.

Peru is working hard to protect its historical and cultural relics from illegal trafficking- and Unesco has taken notice. 



Canadian Ambassador Patricia Fortier invited 70-odd present-and-future female leaders in Peru to her home on March 21 to inspire and share experiences while celebrating the grand steps made by women in Peru over the decades.  

 




Tourism




The Nazca Lines are a series of ancient geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert in southern Peru.

They were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. The high, arid plateau stretches more than 80 kilometres (50 mi) between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on thePampas de Jumana about 400 km south of Lima.

With the developments in web technologies, mapping systems and the integration of satellite imagery using GeoEye, archaeological sites across the world are now visible in Google Maps. 


The tourism activity in Peru is set to surge to 13 percent in 2014, with industry revenues reaching US$ 4.2 billion, the National Tourism Chamber (Canatur) has said.  



Chile was by far the largest source of tourists for Peru in 2013, with 886,485 arrivals last year, according to Andean Parliament member Hildebrando Tapia.

Chile, which lies south of Peru, was followed by the United States, with 487,328 American tourists mainly visiting the cities of Lima and Cusco.  



Known mostly for her poses in front of the camera, supermodel Helena Christensen is showing off her skills on the other side of the lens in an exhibition opening at the Bleecker Street Art Club on January 30.

 The lake Titicaca in Puno is magical and the little islands it has have got a special charm. The people there are so gentle and generous to share all its tradition and to open their homes where you can stay overnight to have a very different experience far from the noisy metropolis.

Sports


Peruvian club Real Garcilaso has been fined $US12,000 ($A13,175) following an incident last month in which club supporters racially abused black Brazilian player Tinga of club Cruzeiro in a Copa Libertadores match. CONMEBOL, the governing body of South American football, announced the fine on Monday and warned the club could face stiffer penalties including forcing it to play in an empty home stadium if similar incidents occur.

Miscellaneous


 A Peruvian police official is carrying out "special security measures" to protect a bishop-- measures that the bishop insists in not needed, according to a Fides report.

"The new police chief of the division of Chimbote has forced me to [have] special security measures," said Bishop �ngel Francisco Sim�n Piorno of Chimbote, who has denounced local corruption.
