Peru has overcome the effects of the global financial crisis with high economic growth due to a sound monetary and fiscal policy and a low vulnerability to external debt, United States' Economic Nobel Laureate, Paul Krugman, has said.

Economy

Peru's achievement of reducing poverty and extreme poverty rates over the last ten years was driven by advances of the Ollanta Humala's administration-run social programs and large expansion of the economy, the Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman said.

Agriculture

The Peruvian Hass Avocado Growers' Association (ProHass) has released a bullish export estimate of 140,000 metric tons (MT) for 2014, representing a year-on-year growth rate of 40%.

Prohass general manager Arturo Medina told Andina that this growth would be driven by higher exports to Europe, which has already registered its first shipments of the season.

Politics

Demonizing Heredia as power-obsessed and Humala as henpecked may make a certain amount of sense for the opposition as a strategy in regional and municipal elections slated for October.

But Peru has more important problems to worry about than a Type-A first lady. It is a nation where more than one in four people still live in poverty, where institutions are weak and where political dissent often devolves into bouts of stone-throwing protests.

The best first ladies are often the ones who do more than sit next to their president-husbands for the photo op. Peruvians need to get over Heredia and devote their energy to fostering the strong political institutions the country now lacks.

Interior Minister Walter Alban has sent a special police force to the coastal city of Huacho to investigate the assassination of a local politician who was seen as a possible candidate for the upcoming regional elections.

Alban said in comments to state news agency Andina that the police will carry out a thorough investigation of the murder, which occurred last Friday. He also said that the police aim to "return the calm" to citizens over concerns about crime.

Mining & Energy

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala visited the jungle region of Loreto on Wednesday to inaugurate a rural electrification project that will benefit 2,160 people in San Antonio del Estrecho, a town near the border with Colombia.

Peruvian mining export revenues fell by 30.9% year-on-year in January mainly after a decrease in the copper trade, according to figures from the countrys mining, oil and energy society, SNMPE.

Latin American-focussed Laconia Resources is heading to market with a capital raising, with the ASX granting the company a trading halt.

Laconia's shares are currently in pre-open.

The company is currently focussing on the Orcco Project in Peru, which is an advanced copper-gold-silver project in the Ayacucho region.

Infrastructure

Peru's private investment promotion agency ProInversin launched a consultancy tender to update and complete the technical studies for the US$400mn Lima potable water concession.

Peru's private promotion investment agency ProInversin awarded the consultancy tender to develop the economic model for the Choquequirao cable car system concession to a consortium comprised of Pricewaterhouse Coopers and Ingerop Conseil Ingenieri.

Diplomacy

Mexican Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Meade will be on a working visit to Peru on March 21-22, for the purpose of discussing bilateral relations and regional issues.

Meade and his Peruvian counterpart Eda Rivas are scheduled to attend the 9th Meeting of the Permanent Mechanism of Political Consultation on Subjects of Mutual Interest in Lima on Friday.

Tourism

Aguas calientes is often overlooked; because of its proximity to Machu Picchu, it's generally seen as more of a place to pass through, rather than visit for itself, but these spectacular photographs will show you another, less seen side to the town.

A Norwegian and a Peruvian who were caught painting graffiti on a wall in Cusco on the weekend, have been released and are not being charged with any crime, according to reports in Correo.

The Regional Culture Directorate in Cusco deemed they had not committed a crime because their painting of initials was made on a colonial and not an Inca wall.

Gastronomy

Chicha comes served in glasses the size of buckets called caporal's, scooped from a plastic tub that looked like it formerly held detergent and served with a film of brown scum on top.

Fashion

Testino captured a series of richly-saturated images showcasing traditional and festival clothing for his latest exhibition, Alta Moda, opening at the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute in New York on November 20.

Alta Moda is a play on words on several levels. It literally means 'high fashion' in Spanish, but is also a nod to Testino's work in fashion magazines, and alludes to the fact that Cusco, one of Peru's highest mountains, has an elevation of about 10,800 feet.

Film

Peruvian Fernando Bacilo has won the award for best actor at the Cartagena de Indias International Film Festival in Colombia.

Bacilo picked up the prize for his role in El Mudo (The Mute), Prensa Latina reported today.

Thirty-six films were in competition in different categories at The Cartagena International Film Festival, founded in 1960.

Stars of international cinema participated at the festival, including British actor Clive Owen, who was awarded an honorary prize, and Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzlez Iarritu.

The festival concluded its 54th edition with the attendance of about 110,000 people, 30 percent higher than last year, said Feltcal director Monika Wagenberg.

Veteran world champion high diver Orlando Duque dives more than 125 feet from a tree into the Amazon River.

Orlando Duque has probably dived off more unique spots than anyone in the world - off massive cliffs, in big cities, and in front of ancient monuments.

But the veteran high diver picked the unlikely setting of the Amazon jungle for his latest feat.
