MARCH
20

Peru's economy in February and March will "definitely" grow at a pace faster than January's 4.23 percent year-on-year expansion, Central Bank President Julio Velarde said on Wednesday.

Velarde said the monetary authority had expected stronger growth in January, when he said weaker output from a large mine stung the Andean country's economic activity.

Economy

Peru's economy could face a major setback if the China enters into an economic slowdown or crisis, a Nobel Prize winning economist said.

During a visit to Peru, Princeton University economist Paul Krugman, who won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2008, said that there is a growing chance China will face an economic crisis in the short term.

Agriculture

Peruvian avocado exports are forecast to rise by 40 per cent to 140,000 tons this season according to Hass avocado producer association ProHass. The organization's president Arturo Medina said the increase is being driven by strong demand in the US and Europe, where consumption of Hass avocados in markets such as Germany was growing every year.

Peru's Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri) is preparing to launch the second phase of its "Mi Riego" irrigation program, Minister Juan Manuel Benites has announced.

Benites said Tuesday that funds for this second phase will be around one billion soles (US$355mn), very similar to those of the first phase launched in 2013.

Politics

President Ollanta Humala on Tuesday called for "mutual respect" among politicians, a day after his government averted what could have been a political crisis.

"Each political group has its expectations and aspirations in the electoral process, but we understand dialogue to be something without blackmail or threats, because we believe that way we don't achieve anything," Humala said in comments reported by state news agency Andina.

Mining & Energy

Peru LNG, the liquefaction plant in Pampa Melchorita, has exported 200 cargoes since its startup in June 2010, according to data from the country's hydrocarbons promotion agency PeruPetro.

The 170,000 cubic metre Barcelona Knutsen vessel was loaded on Saturday 15 March and sent to Mexico's Manzanillo terminal on the Pacific Coast. It was Peru LNG's twelfth cargo this year.

Peru said on Wednesday that it is working with Bear Creek Mining to avoid being sued by the Canadian miner under free trade protections over its suspended silver project.

Finance Minister Luis Miguel Castilla said he is optimistic direct talks between the company and his ministry would defuse a dispute in coming months and avoid international arbitration.

Environment

The feared El Nino weather pattern will likely hit Peru with a "weak to moderate" intensity starting in April, affecting the fishmeal industry on the country's northern coast, the government said on Wednesday.

The prediction, by Peru's official El Nino commission, comes on top of forecasts from around the world that the climate phenomena will probably strike this year.

On the initiative of the United Nations, every March 22, World Water Day is celebrated, which seeks to draw attention to the importance of freshwater and the defence of the sustainable management of this important resource. Each year highlights a particular aspect related to water; this year's theme is "Water and Energy." Roughly 75% of all industrial water withdrawals are used for energy production.

Valeria Wu and Raquel Herrera, two students from Colegio Roosevelt, recently won $50,000 for their school as finalists for the Zayed Future Energy Prize.

Named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates, the ZFEP was developed in 2009 in honor of the U.A.E. leader's constant desire to make a positive environmental change.

Peru has the potential to overcome obstacles to be admitted into the United States' visa waiver program (VWP) for short term visitor stay in the future, Peru's Ambassador to Washington D.C. Harold Forsyth said Wednesday.
