Economy

Non-traditional exports from Peru to the European Union (EU) were valued at more than US$ 2 billion, recording a 6.7 percent year-on-year increase, Peruvian Deputy Foreign Trade Minister, Edgar Vasquez, announced on Wednesday.

Mining & Energy

Peru expects to attract US$60 billion in mining investments over the next ten years, according to the Andean country's Vice-President Marisol Espinoza.

Peru's vice president admitted the obvious yesterday: Newmont copper and gold project Minas Congas remains stalled, and though hopeful it will one day advance, local communities remains steadfast in their opposition.

Peruvian customs officials seized in February 175 kilograms of gold (worth US$6 million) that is believed to have come from illegal mining.

The custom officials found evidence of money laundering from illegal mining as the exporters involved failed to prove the legal origin, possession and purchase of the 175 kilos of gold.

Environment

Peru is one of the world's biodiversity stars. With a variety of climates, geographical regions, and landscapes, a stunning array of animals can be found within Peru's borders. However, 400 species native to Peru are currently in danger of becoming extinct, due in part to poaching and illegal animal trafficking.
Diplomacy

The governments of Peru and Chile have made good progress in the implementation of the verdict issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) last January over the disputed maritime border between both countries, according to former Peruvian Foreign Minister Eduardo Ferrero.

As International Women's Day approaches, we take a look at some of the women who helped make Peru great.
Peru's history is full of great people. People who have fought for their ideals, fought for the country. Men and women who have put Peru on the world stage. This Saturday is International Women's Day, which seems like an apt time to recognize some of the women who made a mark on Peru, especially during the era when women were meant to be seen and not heard.

The "Dejala Decidir" initiative has presented a proposal that would help protect women from prosecution if they decided to end a pregnancy resulting from sexual assault.

The City of Detroit on Wednesday said it owns a key parcel at the Packard Plant site that was left out of last fall's public auction sale to Peru-based developer Fernando Palazuelo.

The city also disputed any claim to the parcel by Dominic Cristini, the plant's former owner, who said this week that he technically owns that parcel and most of the Packard site but would step aside for a price.

John Roach, spokesman for Mayor Mike Duggan, said the city on Wednesday was awaiting a call from Palazuelo, who is back at his home in Lima, Peru, this week, or from his lawyer, to discuss the situation. Roach said that the city was willing to "work with Mr. Palazuelo."
