The European Parliament (EP) on Thursday voted to allow visa-free travel for Peruvian citizens to countries in the Shengen Area in Europe.

The United States was the top destination for Peruvian exports from micro and small-sized enterprises (MSEs) in 2013, the Peruvian Exporters' Association or ADEX has said. 



Total credit of depository institutions to the private sector increased 0.3 percent in January (S/. 573 million), Peru's Central Reserve Bank (BCR) said Wednesday.

Peru is a global leader in the mining industry, which makes it a natural choice for international investors. It is one of the world's biggest producers of base and precious metals. Currently, it is the third largest producer of copper and zinc in the world. Peru is also a major producer of gold, silver, among other minerals.

Mariana Resources is now gearing up for drilling at both of its Peruvian projects. Ahead is the extended scout drilling programme at Condor de Oro copper project in northern Peru and the initial programme at the Soledad in Central Peru.

As reported earlier this month, the firm unveiled positive channel sampling and mapping results at the gold, silver, copper Soledad prospect. 


China's Jinzhao Mining plans to submit an environmental impact study for its US$1.5bn Pampa de Pongo iron ore project to the Peruvian government by mid-year

Peruvian Ambassador to the United States Harold Forsyth and California Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. have signed an agreement to strengthen cultural, economic and academic ties and tackle shared challenges, including climate change.

The guinea pig, called "cuy" in Peru, is a traditional Andean food. But the humble animal has also experienced a gastronomic boom in the last few years- and not just in Per�, but in the United States as well.

Clashes between Peruvian police and hundreds of protesters in the tourist region of Cuzco have left at least five people injured.

Cuzco union official Wilfredo Alvarez says organizers called the protest to demand that the government of President Ollanta Humala fulfill its promises to build infrastructure projects such as a gas pipeline and an international airport.

Gastronomy



As soon as you step inside the restaurant, you can tell that no effort or money has been spared in making the restaurant look elegant, modern, and stylish. In the waiting room, there is a well-furnished bar where an enormous black spider roof lamp catches our attention while we wait for our hosts. Sam, an American Chef with culinary experience in the USA and Europe, and Maji, a Peruvian-Greek Chef with studies in Peru and abroad, greet us with a friendly smile. Less than a year ago, they tell us, they joined efforts to open up La Decima with the idea of offering international contemporary food.


My boyfriend and I ordered the Classic ceviche at Ceviche by the Sea to share as an appetizer. We loved it so much that we ordered a second one. 



"Undiscovered Wines: A Journey to Peru" is the title of the next dinner seminar at Casa Larga Vineyards.

Lorraine Hems, a sommelier and a lecturer at Rochester Institute of Technology, will speak at the event, which will start at 6 p.m. March 17.


Culture





From April 10 to Sept. 2, 2014, the National Geographic Museum will be home to a remarkable collection of ancient gold and silver artifacts excavated from Peru's legendary royal tombs. "Peruvian Gold: Ancient Treasures Unearthed" will showcase extraordinary objects from Peru's pre-Inca heritage, including gold ceremonial and funerary masks, textiles, ceremonial ornaments, ceramics and jewelry. The centerpiece of the exhibition will be El Tocado, the largest and most ornate pre-Columbian headdress ever discovered. The extraordinary gold headdress dates from the Middle Sican period (A.D. 900-1100). This will be the first time it will be on display in the United States since it was unearthed in 1991. 



A mummy that's spent the last 110 years in two museums in Munich, Germany, and which was long presumed to have local origins, may actually be a young South American woman who was ritually murdered hundreds of years ago. Carbon dating revealed that the 20- to 25-year-old female had died sometime between 1451 and 1642 C.E. She had lived near the Pacific coast in southern Peru.

The founder of liberation theology, the Latin American-inspired Catholic theology advocating for the poor, received a hero's welcome Tuesday at the Vatican as the once-criticized movement continues its rehabilitation under Pope Francis.



Peruvian students bored with dry history texts are about to get a chance to learn about their country's past through a slightly more exciting medium: video games.

Grupo Avatar, a video game design group made up of students and faculty from the Pontificia Universidad Cat�lica del Per�, has developed a video game about the Cusco Rebellion of 1814, a conflict that is considered a precursor to the Peruvian war for independence.
