The contract reached at the South Korean builder's branch office in Incheon calls for the construction of a 720 megawatt gas-fired thermal power plant in Mollendo, some 1,055 kilometers south of Lima.

Peru's metallic mineral production in December increased in nearly all major metals, while gold, iron ore and cadmium fell.

Peru's private investment promotion agency ProInversin has launched a consultancy tender for the private co-financed initiative to build a monorail urban transport system in Arequipa's metropolitan area.

The monorail project was presented to ProInversin as a solution to Arequipa's transportation problems and consists of the design, construction, operation and maintenance of a 14km system to be implemented above the city's existing roads.

Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani held talks here on Thursday with Peru's President Ollanta Humala.
The meeting dealt with bilateral relations between the two countries and means of boosting and developing them as well as issues of common interest, according to Qatar News Agency (QNA).

Tourism

Local tourism authorities report that Tumbes's beaches, food, and beautiful natural landscapes bring visitors from Peru's neighbor to the north.
Environment

Peru's treasured Manu National Park is the world's top biodiversity hotspot for reptiles and amphibians, according to a new survey published last week by biologists from the University of California, Berkeley, Southern Illinois University in Carbondale (SIU-Carbondale) and Illinois Wesleyan University.

Manu National Park is one of the most biodiverse places in the world, but industries like gold mining and gas and oil drilling are threatening its continued existence.
Culture

In the past, most tourists stopped in Cusco, Peru, simply for a quick visit before ascending the peaks of Machu Picchu.

That has changed. Cusco is now a destination for artists and collectors around the world.

The current exhibit at Mattie Rhodes Gallery, co-curated by textile artist Catherine Joslyn and Peruvian-based Nilda Callanaupa Alvarez, shows why.

Sports

Mario Vzquez Raa, President of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO), has congratulated Peru on its "excellent work" so far as it prepares to host the 2019 Pan and Parapan American Games in the capital Lima.

Anti-gay bullying is a common problem in schools across Peru, says a new report published by the United Nations Development Programme.

According to the report, homophobic bullying is only part of the problem. When surveyed, more than 42% of self-identified heterosexual students said that they had been victims of bullying. Almost 68% of gay students reported having been bullied at one time or another.

The Peruvian government has been looking for ways to reduce its dependence on natural resources and believes a focus on the ICT industry could facilitate this move. At the end of 2013, the IT industry accounted for around 0.9% of GDP, and we expect this to rise to 1.1% by 2018. The government is pushing initiatives such as the Fibre Optic Backbone Network, StartUp Peru and the One Laptop Per Child policy, which should result in a boost for local IT companies. We believe Peru's IT market will perform strongly over the medium term due to a combination of a supportive macroeconomic environment and growth trends in the IT sector.
