Hugo Perea, chief economist for Peru at BBVA Research in Lima, said it will be important for the Andean country to maintain a growth rate of 5.6 percent despite external volatility.
 
 

Peru will remain one of the world's fastest growing economies this year, with GDP growth projected at 5.6 percent in 2014, according to global financial research firm BBVA Research.  

Economy


Peru's central bank offered to sell dollars in the local spot market on Tuesday as banks started to buy greenbacks to meet expiring contracts and the sol currency traded stable at 2.824/2.825 per U.S. dollar. 

Mining & Energy


Peru's mining production climbed 7.8% in December, but export earnings still fell, the government said in a preliminary report.

Manufacturing led by steel, which is tracked a month earlier, fell 4.6% in November, the biggest monthly decline in 2013, according to a report published by the national statistics institute (INEI).



Peru's Minera Yanacocha, run by U.S.-based Newmont Mining Corp., said that work on the giant Minas Conga copper and gold mine in Peru remains on hold, despite recent reports the stalled project could soon be under way again. 



A two-day forum on investment and development opportunities in Peru's broad energy field is to be held March 12-13 in Lima, organized by Latin Markets.

The summit - New Energy Projects in Peru: Planning, Investment, Operations, Technology and Constructionis to include more than 65 speakers, leaders in the fields of energy development, concessions and investment as well as local and international industry regulators and authorities.  



The long-contested expansion of Peru's main natural gas field has won final regulatory approval despite U.N. concerns that it could endanger Amazon tribes living in voluntary isolation in pristine jungles.

The Camisea project, located just 60 miles (100 kilometers) from Peru's famed Machu Picchu ruins, has faced fierce opposition from environmental groups since it began in 2003, but strong backing from Peru's political leaders as a vital economic lifeline.

Agriculture


Farming production in Peru posted a 2.2% year-on-year increase in 2013, encouraging the decentralized job creation in the country, the Peruvian Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry (MINAGRI) has reported. 



Peruvian entrepreneurs are expected to close business deals worth over US$ 85 million at this year's Fruit Logistica, the world's leading trade fair for fresh fruit and vegetables, Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister (Mincetur) has reported. 



In a bid to improve the position of the Peruvian fine flavor cocoa worldwide, the country's Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry (MINAGRI) launched Monday the second edition of the program "Seeking Gold Cacao Peru 2014". 

Environment


More than 400 dead dolphins were found last month on the Pacific Ocean beaches of northern Peru where twice that amount were encountered in 2012, officials said Monday. 

Authorities never established the cause of the deaths in 2012. They are doing autopsies on the latest dolphins found during January in the Lambayeque region on the northern coast.



Researchers from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) and the University of Costa Rica have apparently discovered a new, fiery-red species of coral in the shallow waters of the Peruvian Pacific.

The new species has been named Psammogorgia hookeri in honor of Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University biologist Yuri Hooker, and according to the authors of a paper in the Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the UK, it was located by scuba divers at the Paracas National Reserve.

The Hague




The upcoming "two-plus-two" talks between Peru and Chile are expected to discuss ways to map out the exact coordinates of the countries' maritime boundary, recently drawn by the International Court of Justice in The Hague. 



One of the world's most successful living Spanish-language authors has weighed in on the Per�-Chile maritime border conflict.

Isabel Allende, author of "The House of the Spirits" and "Daughter of Fortune," seems satisfied with the ruling handed down by the International Court of Justice in the Hague. In an interview with Deutsche Welle, the author criticized people who were angry about the ruling, saying that they lacked historical perspective.

Gastronomy


From cozy, family-run eateries lining side-streets to grandiose restaurants standing brilliantly above city-sidewalks, one dish has presented itself time and time again in Peru as a culinary staple: Lomo Saltado. Despite the myriad of variations on this symbolic meal, including Pollo Saltado and Tallarin Saltado, Lomo Saltado was the spark that lit the fire on this tasty method of stir-frying ingredients, which still exists today as both a national favorite and as a symbol of cross-cultural fusion. 



I've seen delicious ceviche style dishes around for a while and finally decided to get down to it. Actually, being closer to the summer months here in the Southern Hemisphere, we recently dined somewhere where a delicious scallop ceviche came forth, topped by golden spoonfuls of grapefruit granita... It was heaven! Ok, it was the Four Seasons, so of course it was heaven! 

Tourism


Manu National Park was selected as the Best International Active Tourism Product in the Nature Category at the recently-held International Tourism Fair (Fitur) in Madrid, Spain. 



The February festival is one of Peru's most famous religious celebrations and is known for its elaborate costumes and vibrant dances. 



About two million Peruvian and foreign tourists are projected to visit the 14 protected natural areas in Peru in 2014, according to the National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp). 

Miscellaneous


Inca Kola is a peculiar drink. The unique lemon verbena flavor combined with its bright yellow hue make it a soda unlike any other. Somehow, this quirky beverage became Peru's most popular soft drink- and what's more, it's become inextricably linked with the Peruvian identity. 



Shelving the case of the forced sterilisation of more than 2,000 women in Peru during the Alberto Fujimori regime was a surprise move by the prosecutor in charge. What happened? An IPS investigation found that legal avenues to pursue justice have not been exhausted. 



Mobile operator Telef�nica has announced a partnership with Line, the messaging service from Japan with over 300 million registered users. The deal gives Telef�nica exclusive access to the new Line for Firefox OS app, which is only available to the operator's customers in Venezuela, Peru, Spain, Colombia, Uruguay, Brasil and Mexico.
