Mining & Energy


Gran Terra Energy, a Canadian oil and gas company focused on South America, rose to the highest in nearly three years after confirming "significant" reserves at the Breta�a oilfield in Peru.

Gran Tierra touched C$8.66, the highest intraday price since March 2011. The stock has gained 50 percent over the past twelve months.



Posco Engineering and Construction said yesterday that it won a $300 million order to build a power generation plant in Peru.
The affiliate of Korea's largest steelmaker, Posco, said that it received the contract from Samay 1 S.A., a Peruvian power company, which asks the company to build a 720 megawatt gas-fired thermal power plant in Mollendo, some 1,055 kilometers south of the capital Lima. 



Gas company Pluspetrol admits it will cause 'fear' and possibly 'stress' and a 'sensation of invasion' among indigenous peoples in the Peruvian Amazon who have little or no contact with outsiders. 

Agriculture


Peru has the opportunity to become a world's leading exporter of fine flavor cocoa, due to its production's quality and traceability, World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) President, Nicko Debenham, has said. 



The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Peruvian Exporters' Association (ADEX) organized a master conference for ensuring better opportunities abroad for Peru's cocoa industry. 



More than 180 former producers of coca leaves in Peru's northern Huanuco region will benefit from the delivery of 94,339 banana suckers that will be planted and used as temporary shade for cocoa and coffee crops.

Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister, Magali Silva, participates in the 44th World Economic Forum's (WEF) annual meeting where international political and business leaders are gather to discuss economic trends and issues of global importance.

A decades-old maritime dispute between Chile and Peru goes to a final ruling next week with both governments hoping it will end one of Latin America's last big border spats and improve ties between the two trading partners and longtime rivals. 



Peruvian President Ollanta Humala has said his recent meeting with former presidents Alejandro Toledo and Alan Garcia was "positive and fruitful" towards building national unity ahead of the upcoming ruling on Peru's maritime border dispute with Chile. 



Chilean President Sebastian Pinera said Wednesday his country would abide by any verdict by the Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ) on maritime dispute with Peru, but would also exercise its rights. 



Peruvian President Ollanta Humala met Wednesday with representatives of local business associations as the country prepares for next week's ruling on a decades-long maritime border dispute with Chile. 



President Ollanta Humala met with his National Security Council Monday, and with private business leaders on Tuesday, days before an international court is to rule on a maritime border dispute with Chile. 



Peru's Foreign Minister, Eda Rivas, has highlighted the existing brotherhood and friendship ties which run deep between border cities of Peru and Chile, few days before knowing the verdict to be issue by the International Court of Justice (ICJ). 



Peruvian investments in Chile totaled nearly US$ 10 billion at the end of 2013, according to the National Chamber of Commerce, Production, Tourism and Services (Perucamaras). 

Gastronomy


 Peruvian food also made a splash at the Fancy Food Show. A big enough splash, in fact, that USAToday says that "Peruvian is the new Thai."

For USA Today, one of the highlights was trying cancha, Peruvian fried corn. Bruce Heiman, an investor in a company producing cancha in the US, told USA Today that "Peruvian cuisine is a deep, untapped well of flavors. They started feeding me Peruvian food, and I was entranced."



Beer aficionados have long had it rough here in Peru. While some of the big local brands are certainly adequate for enjoying alongside a meal, finding anything truly exceptional is a challenge. 

Tourism


While scanning the panorama of lush green flora set against the six centuries old Incan ruins, a thought passed through Greig Trout mind: this, he realized, is what it means to be alive, a notion, that in years past, he never thought would be a reality.

Miscellaneous


Peru's private investment agency ProInversion has announced that it has received two bids in its tender for provision of technological security services in prisons. 



Peruvian President Ollanta Humala, along with First Lady Nadine Heredia, welcomed the World Cup Trophy to Peru at the Government Palace on Wednesday, just hours after it arrived in the South American country as part of its promotional world tour.
