The Primer Minister of Peru said that a way to impact people's lives is by articulating public and private investment in each territory, triggering synergies to set up Regional and Intra Regional Development Poles.
 
 

Peru's government will promote the establishment of regional development poles for fostering the output in the countryside and, thus, achieve the growth target above 6%, Peru's newly-appointed Prime Minister, Cesar Villanueva, announced Wednesday.  

Economy


Peru's private investment promotion agency ProInversi�n has postponed the award dates for the tenders of three of its biggest transportation projects, totaling US$7.16bn, until 2014.

The three projects postponed are  the US$6.5bn Lima metro line 2, the US$556mn Cusco airport and US$103mn Pisco port.

Lima's metro line 2 concession, which consists of  the financing, design, construction, rolling stock supply, operation and maintenance of a total of 35km of underground lines connecting 13 districts, is the government's biggest transportation project.

The award date has now been postponed until February 2014 at the request of the bidders who asked for more time to complete the necessary documents, a ProInversi�n spokesperson confirmed to BNamericas. 

 

Mining & Energy


Gra�a y Montero S.A.A., the largest engineering and construction company in Peru, announced today that it will acquire from Pluspetrol Resources Corporation a 12.38% indirect equity interest in Transportadora de Gas del Per� S.A. for consideration of US$237 million.



Foster Wheeler AG has announced that a subsidiary of its Global Engineering and Construction Group has been awarded a contract by Wood Mackenzie Limited to provide consultancy services for two projects in Peru: The Energy Security and South Pipeline Project and the Energy Node Project.

Foster Wheeler will develop the design and cost estimated for both of the planned investments. Foster Wheeler's scope of work is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2013.



Peru is the largest producer of gold in Latin America, and the sixth-largest in the world, according to an October article by the New Yorker. High gold prices and increasing production have thus far been a boon to Peruvian and international gold barons, but recently falling prices have begun to worry mining investors and metals producers. 

Diplomacy


Peruvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Eda Rivas Franchini will travel to Washington, D.C. this week to take part in a series of high-level meetings with top local authorities. 



United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will visit Peru to attend the opening of the General Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) on December 2. 



Peru has won a seat in the 21-member World Heritage Committee of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) for the new term between 2013 and 2017. 

Environment


As U.N. climate talks continue in Warsaw, soon a flying, insect-like robot developed by scientists at Wake Forest University will give an unprecedented look at Peru's tropical cloud forest, one of the world's most biodiverse ecosystems and a key indicator of global climate change. 



Illegal, unregulated mining (sometimes euphemistically referred to as "informal mining") is destroying the Peruvian Amazon at a rate even ecologists can barely believe. As if that weren't bad enough, the mercury used by illegal miners is poisoning the people who live near mining centers. 

Archaeology


Archaeologists have reportedly discovered human remains as well as metal and ceramic artifacts in a dig at the Mocollope archaeological complex in the district of Chocope in the region of La Libertad, in northern Peru.

Archaeologist R�gulo Franco told La Rep�blica that investigators are dealing with artifacts from the Moche civilization, from approximately 200 AD - 800 AD.

Gastronomy


Will Smith is currently in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to film a new movie. As Mr. Smith is a human being who needs to eat, he and an entourage of companions decided to seek out some food in the Argentine capital. According to RPP Noticias, Smith prudently opted for a Peruvian restaurant. 

Tourism


JetBlue Airways on Thursday launched its route from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to Lima, Peru. 



Peru's corporate travel market is expected to increase by 15 percent in 2014, driven by the economic growth of the Andean country, according to leading corporate travel management company FCm Travel Solutions. 



When asked to name a place in Peru, most people probably first think of Machu Picchu, or if they remember their Paddington Bear particularly well, perhaps the capital, Lima. However, I've always liked to try and do things a little differently, so when I last had the chance to spend a solid month in Peru, I thought it would be good to base myself somewhere else. Being lucky enough to have some pretty good friends in Peru, I managed to find someone who knew someone, whose apartment was going to be vacant in the beautiful city of Arequipa, and so with bags packed, I set off for the foothills of the Andes! 

Miscellaneous


Anyone who has spent any time in Lima's historical center knows that many of Peru's significant historical buildings and monuments aren't exactly in top condition. However, a measure currently being debated by the Peruvian congress could push companies to help take care of their country's historical heritage. 

 



The British Council released a report today entitled "Languages of the Future," ranking non-English languages in order of importance for Brits to learn for economic and cultural reasons.

According to The Independent, the report determined that learning Spanish should be aspiring British polyglots' first priority, followed by Arabic and French.



Associated Press photographer Esteban Felix on Wednesday won the journalist images category of the Gabriel Garcia Marquez International Journalism Award for his work on sugar cane workers affected by chronic kidney disease in Nicaragua.

Felix, a Peruvian who is based in Nicaragua, described the winning project, "Bitter Sugar: A Mystery Disease," as a multimedia and photography effort about the cane cutters at the San Antonio sugar plant. 

 



Student Natalie Goodwin is facing a tough challenge to help benefit needy youngsters. The 20-year-old from Nuneaton has volunteered to tackle the daunting Machu Picchu mountain range in Peru in aid of Childreach International.

"The money that will be raised will go to children in the UK and internationally to help them with health, child rights and education," said Natalie.
