Peru inks 300MW Arequipa hydro contracts
Peru's energy and mining ministry MEM sign contracts with the Generadora El�ctrica Molloco consortium for the 300MW Molloco hyrdo plant project in Peru's Arequipa region, a MEM press release said.
Awarded in March, the tender specifies a two-phase project schedule. In the first 24-month phase Generadora El�ctrica Molloco will complete definitive studies and decide whether to begin the second 60-month construction phase.

GMP signs 10-city Peru gas distribution contract
Gra�a y Montero Petrolera (GMP) signed a contract with Peru's government for a previously awarded 10-city natural gas distribution project.
The US$15mn contract includes the distribution of CNG and VNG to the cities of Abancay, Andahuaylas, Huamanga, Huanta, Huancavelica, Huancayo, Jauja, Cusco, Juliaca and Puno in the Andean highlands.

Darwin Commences Ground Geophysical Survey at Suriloma Peru
Darwin Resources Corp announces that it has commenced a ground geophysical induced polarization survey at its Suriloma project in the Department of La Libertad, Peru.
At Suriloma, Darwin has discovered surface gold and silver mineralization at 6 prospect areas over a strike length of 5 kilometres.

FAO Director-General Jos� Graziano da Silva, Peru's First Lady and Special Ambassador for the International Year of Quinoa, Nadine Heredia , and Bolivian Minister of Rural Development and Lands, Nemecia Achacollo have participated today in a symbolic quinoa harvest in FAO headquarters. The harvest was by hand, as has been done for centuries in the Andean region.

Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori showed up for the start of his fifth trial with mussed hair and wearing a sweater over a T-shirt. He sat at the defendant's table taking his blood pressure and writing the measurements in a white notebook.
The 75-year-old Fujimori is already in jail serving 25 years following convictions in four trials for authorizing death squads and corruption. The trial that began Thursday alleges he diverted government funds to finance newspapers that backed his successful run for a third term.

Chambi was a bridge among different cultures and peoples.

Another day, another archaeological discovery out of northern Peru. This time, however, the discovery wasn't made by a team of specialist investigators at a dig. In fact, the find was made by municipal workers working on landscaping in the Plaza de Armas in the city of Huamachuco, and it was completely by accident.

Magistrate upholds complaints of animal cruety in banning the eating of felines at annual Curru�ao festival in San Luis, south of Lima.
A provincial judge has banned the eating of cats and suspended the cat race at the festival held every September, upholding complaints of animal cruelty made by the animal rights commission at Lima's Law Society. In her ruling, magistrate Maria Luyo said the event "fomented violence based on cruel acts against animals which caused grave social damage and damaged public health".
