IT'S EASY to cast Peru in superlative terms. The nation has the world's deepest canyon, a selection of the Western Hemisphere's tallest mountains, and one of the driest deserts on Earth. It contains the headwaters of the world's most massive river and a sizable portion of the largest tract of tropical rainforest on the planet.
The country is classified as "megadiverse," home to 21,462 species of plants and animals, almost 6,000 of which are endemic. Dozens if not hundreds of influential cultures have risen in Peru within the last 11,000 years, with the Inca representing the largest empire in pre-Columbian America.

Foreign direct investment in Peru recorded 27 percent growth in the first half of 2013, becoming the third largest recipient in the region, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has said.
According to ECLAC's latest report, the Andean country has emerged as the third largest recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI) by attracting US$ 6,87 billion during the first half of the year.
Likewise, the UN agency said Thursday Peru's FDI inflows in 2012 totaled US$ 12,24 billion.

Peru's current economic situation is the result of a state policy that should go beyond next administrations, the President of the Peru's Council of Ministers, Juan Jimenez, said Thursday.
He hailed the recent recognition of the Peruvian economy by the World Bank as Latin America's top performer over the last decade.
"This kind of information goes beyond the current administration; it formulates a state policy we have had over the last ten years and has been yielding good results. We hope this policy continue with the next government," he noted.

Chinese giants poised to go head to head in battle for $5.9bn Las Bambas mine
Two groups of Chinese miners, in partnerships that will pit giant Chinalco against rival Minmetals, lead a short list of suitors for Glencore Xstrata's $5.9bn Las Bambas copper mine in Peru, according to sources involved in the process.
Glencore agreed in 2013 to sell the Las Bambas project to meet demands from China's competition authorities after its record-breaking takeover of mining group Xstrata. The Chinese regulator feared the tie-up handed the newly formed commodities heavyweight too much power in copper.

Camisea paid US$105.7 mn in royalties to Peru in September
Camisea Consortium announced Thursday that royalty payments to Peru's government from natural gas operations in September totaled US$ 105.7 million.
These resources are distributed according to the current Canon Law, corresponding to the regional government of Cusco and Municipal governments around 50 percent of the amount, that is, US$ 52.6 million.

Drilling under way at Albacora platform offshore Peru
BPZ Energy has spudded the A-18D development well at the Albacora field platform in block Z-1 offshore Peru. Drilling and completion could last up to 12 weeks, with a targeted depth for the well of around 12,000 ft (3,657 m) subsea.
This is the company's second development drilling program on the block. It expects to issue an update on the first development well at the CX-15 platform before the end of this month.

Peruvian Premier Juan Jimenez said Thursday that the government will happily explain to Congress why President Ollanta Humala held an unscheduled meeting with his French counterpart this week.
Political opponents in Congress have asked for an explanation of the meeting in Paris, which they have called a "constitutional infraction."
