In June, indigenous communities, conservation authorities and WWF celebrated 10 years of success in restoring Peru's largest wetland complex. But the communities mobilised, populations of fish and turtles have recovered, and the oil drilling is now monitored.

The Letter from Birmingham Jail it is not. Since September, former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, who is serving out a 25-year sentence for human rights abuses in the 1990s, has been engaged in a particularly rare form of opposition politics, tweeting out political commentary to his now-10,000 followers from behind bars.
Last month, the Twitter account -- along with an accompanying Facebook page -- launched with an inaugural YouTube message and photo montage of Fujimori, along with a written message to his queridos amigos announcing that he would be sharing his thoughts and memoirs on social media, and that "some young people and close collaborators" would be administering the accounts.

Drug mules Michaella McCollum Connolly and Melissa Reid have yet to make a fresh bid to strike a deal with prosecutors and secure a shorter prison sentence, it emerged yesterday.
The pair were hauled back to court last Tuesday after being told their guilty pleas were not good enough. They expanded on statements they made a week earlier in the hope of avoiding trial on drugs trafficking charges and receiving jail sentences of just over six-and-a-half years.
But prosecutors said last night they had yet to receive any official request from the women's lawyers for an early termination of the case.
Juan Mendoza Abarca, the head of the anti-drugs unit prosecuting the pair, said: "We have received no request yet from Melissa and Michaella's lawyers requesting an early termination."

Hackers of LulzSec Peru have published a series of documents allegedly representing "Venezuela Army secret files." According to LulzSec Peru, the files have been leaked from the Operational Strategic Command of the Armed Forces of Venezuela. The information appears to be taken from a Linux machine to which the hackers have gained root access.
