Peruvian food is here to stay in the US.

With a number of restaurants opening in smaller cities, Peruvian food is catching on everywhere.

It's no secret to foodies in places like London, New York, and Tokyo that Peruvian food is one of today's strongest food trends. Virgilio Martinez in London was just awarded a Michelin star, and New York is full of burgeoning hotspots serving cebiche and pisco sours.

But if you live outside of large metropolises like those, it can be hard to come by good Peruvian food.

However, luckily for suburban gourmets, Peruvian restaurants are beginning to spread far and wide.

The National Institute of Statistics and Information, or INEI, said that gold production increased 12.7% in August from the same month last year to 14,446 kilograms. The higher production came from several mines, including those owned by Glencore Xstrata and Gold Fields Ltd., the INEI said.

Peru to call bids for jungle oil blocks in December, minister says

Peru plans to call bids for 26 oil and gas exploration blocks in the Amazon jungle in December, once prior consultation hearings have been completed with indigenous communities, energy and mines minister Jorge Merino said.

At the same time, a group of potential bidders requested the government postpone a separate bid round for offshore blocks to give them more time to study the areas, Merino said.
The government has "made progress" in consultations with indigenous communities for jungle blocks 62 and 192, Merino said. Of 28 exploration blocks that had declared force majeure due to social conflicts and bureaucratic delays, 10 continue to be held up by conflicts and eight by lack of permits, he said.

Peru to spur gold processing plants in formalization drive, minister says

Peru's government plans to promote the construction of gold processing plants around the country as part of a drive to formalize its small-scale mining sector, energy and mines minister Jorge Merino said.

The government is also coordinating operatives to destroy illegal mining operations in protected areas, and is working to control fuel and mercury supplies, register machinery and process 70,000 applications to register concessions, Merino said. At least another 280,000 people depend on the informal mining industry, he said.

Gastronomy

The Peruvian government believes it has a diplomatic solution to a spirited problem.

The problem? Not enough Americans are familiar with Pisco, a Peruvian liquor that has been riding a popular wave of trendy South American cuisines to become an up-and-comer on the cocktail scene. The solution? Appoint 10 U.S. bartenders to serve as official Pisco ambassadors for the grape brandy.

Peruvian pisco seems to be on its way up. Once an obscure grape liquor familiar only to hardcore brandy-lovers, pisco is increasingly becoming more and more well-known outside of Peru.

Peruvian pisco is has even garnered legal vindication this week. The Supreme Court of the nation of El Salvador granted Peru the right to market and sell pisco as a nationally proprietary good. The victory comes after almost ten years of legal squabbles between Chile and Peru in El Salvador.

Yesterday in New York the brand 'Amazon' was officially proclaimed winner of the International Chocolate Award 2013, phase 'U.S., Latin America and Asia', ensuring their place in the grand final to be held in London on October 15. There, "Amazon" will compete with the best brands in the world to continue to demonstrate that producers of fine cocoa and chocolate from Peru have enormous commercial potential.

A day of sunshine and hiking in San Jeronimo de Surco

This winter has been Lima's most intense in 30 years. But, as Terra Hall discovered, relief, warmer temperatures and a healthy dose of vitamin D are just an hour-and-a-half away.

I'm like a bear. In the winter, I go into hibernation mode, packing on the pounds and retreating to the warmth and comfort of my bed. Then, when the temperatures rise and the sun comes out, I can't seem to get enough of the rays, often waking up early just to get the most out of the day.

Needless to say, I was fed up with dark days; so on a recent Saturday, I decided to take a day-trip to San Jeronimo de Surco, a mountainous town 50 miles east of Lima. At this time of year, San Jeronimo offers warmer temperatures, blue skies and lots of sunshine, not to mention some great hiking and beautiful vistas.
