President's Letter

Dear Alums and Friends of the Mount,

We are concluding a very strong year at the Mount. Academically, the students have performed extraordinarily well. In addition to 100% college acceptance with 99% attending, over 60% of the students received an academic scholarship. Just a sampling of the results: our valedictorian turned down MIT to attend Princeton, and another student selected Georgetown over Nortre Dame. Over half the students are attending their first choice college.

The success of the Mount in educating students first started in 1926. Our Legends of the Mount honorees represent the 50's, 60's, and 70's. This is a great legacy of achievement for all Mount alums to share in. I encourage you to follow their example so that the future of the Mount is ensured.

Make sure to check out the pictures from the 25th Annual Golf Outing. This was a sell-out event, and brought over 150 alums and their guests out to celebrate another wonderful tradition. This year's event was dedicated to the memory of Bro. John Bantz in honor of his many years of service and dedication to the Mount in so many roles over his tenure.

This is my last introduction to our e-Newsletter. As you may remember I am retiring after nine years of service as President. I anticipate an "encore career" as a Visiting Research Scholar at Oxford University in the fall, and a faculty member at the Graduate School of Education at Fordham University after that in the spring.

It has been my pleasure to serve the Mount, and I eagerly look forward to the continued unfolding of successes for the school. We have some interesting irons in the fire - stay tuned - the best is yet to be!

Sincerely,

Dr. Anthony Miserandino

Ps. Remember to live life in the footsteps of Champagnat, with a "heart that knows no bounds."

It is vital that we maintain a more positive outlook on life so that when we face a challenge, it will not overcome us. Mount 25th Annual Golf Outing
Beats the Rain!

From l to r: Bill Hecht, TK,  "Al Czervik"  TK and TK

The forecast was ominous, but bad weather doesn't slow down Mountaineers!  After a night of  heavy rain and a dark morning sky, 106 golfers teed off at Fenway Country Club in Scarsdale, NY at the 25th Annual Mount Saint Michael Academy  Golf and Tennis Outing.

This Year's outing honored the memory of Mount Legend and former Mount President Brother John Bantz FMS '56. At the dinner reception Bro. John was remembered fondly by close friend Peter Tamigi '81 and by his sister Rita Bantz Connors.  A scholarship in memory of Brother John has been established and all those in attendance were encouraged to participate.

Julian Ullah '15 and his big brother
John Rossi '05 spoke about their Mount experience.

Two young alumni brothers,  Julian Ullah '15 and John Rossi '05 came back to speak about their uniquely positive Mount experience. John felt it was important that Julian receive the same quality education he had received a decade earlier on the corner of Nereid and Murdock: John, who is his brother's legal guardian, interrupted his college study to work full time in order to pay Julian's tuition at Mount.

Financial aid for Julian, that came through the Mount Scholarship Fund, was a huge help to John in helping to meet Julian's tuition payments. John felt it was important that Julian receive the same quality education he had received a decade earlier on the corner of Nereid

Bill Peterson went into character as Rodney Dangerfield as Al Czervik from Caddyshack by day and Las Vegas Rodney by evening to lead a lively live auction that included choice items such as a St. Thomas, Virgin Islands Villa, Golf at Winged Foot, A Reservation at the Legendary Rao's, A Private Dinner at DaGiorgio's in New Rochelle prepared by chef/owner Giorgio Giaginto '95 and Two Superbowl 50 Tickets!

The day was fun, dry, and a financial success! The Mount and the golf and tennis committees would like to thank all those who attended for the continued support of the outing and our scholarship fund.

2014/2015 Annual Fund:
Why Give? By Matthew Wallace '16

Matt Wallace '16

Dear Donors of Mount St. Michael Academy,

My name is Mark Wallace and I am currently a junior at the Mount. I am the youngest of three children. I grew up watching my family struggle to keep us all in Catholic School.

As my sister and brother moved into college and high school my parents could barely afford our education in spite of their hard work and effort. Then in the fall of 2013 my brother Matthew, who was a senior at the Mount, passed away. We all lost our way for a time.

If it were not for the unselfish financial support of the donors and the support from the Mount I would not have been able to stay at the Mount during a time when I needed help the most.

The loss of my brother still deeply affects me but I have learned to cope because of the support of my friends and teachers. I was able to heal in a familiar environment where I shared memories with my big brother. I would have never been able to stay at the Mount, receive an education, and continue to make memories if it were not for the financial support that I received. I will be forever grateful to the donors for making this possible.

l am now a member of the National Honors Society while playing varsity football and varsity lacrosse. I am striving to be a leader at the Mount like my brother. I look forward to graduating with my brothers and succeeding in college. My recent experiences have inspired me to become a child psychologist. I want to help children through difficult situations and succeed in life. In addition, I know that above all, it is my responsibility to give back to the Mount.

My mom says "it is important to show your appreciation in words but you must back your words up with positive actions". At this time I am saying thank you and hope to see you at my graduation in 2016 so you can see the accomplishments you helped me achieve.

Best Regards,
Mark Wallace Class of 2016

Bro. James Bantz Memorial Scholarship

The Bro. John Bantz Memorial Scholarship was established as a non-endowed scholarship in the fall of 2014 to honor the memory and legacy of Mount's former President. Bro. John served at the Mount for 31 years in a variety of roles: as Junior HS Principal, Guidance Counselor, and Development Director.

He stood ready to serve the school in whatever task was required to enhance and move forward the academic and co-curricular program. Prior to his service at the Mount, Bro. John taught math for many years at various Marist schools.

Bro. John was an avid sports fan and was present on the field, off the court or around the track for three seasons, year in and year out. He knew the names of all the students participating in an activity.

The scholarship award will be given to a graduating senior, who exhibits the qualities of character so well illustrated in Bro. John's life:  a spirit of good sportsmanship, a love of math and a record of service to the Mount community.
