President's Letter
|
|
Dear Alumni and Friends of the Mount,
Spring is here, and the Easter season brings many blessings. We offer you and your family our prayers and best wishes at this special time of year!
This time of year also is energized by the college process: this is the time when students are notified by competitive colleges that they have been accepted. To date the Mount has done very well. We have students now being accepted at MIT, Cornell, Notre Dame, Georgetown, and Williams College. We are waiting for other Ivy League schools later this week. We are very proud of the Class of 2015, and the scholarships are growing in number every day.
Speaking of the Ivy League, you will find an article showcasing the talents of Malik Gill at Dartmouth. While leading his team, Malik has also carried close to a 3.5 GPA! Success on the court and in the classroom has always been the mantra of Mount student-athletes and coaches.
Such success in the formative years at the Mount has produced a wonderful cohort of benefactors and sustainers of the Mount's vision for excellence. This year we are proud to honor the special contributions of alums as Legends of the Mount. Check inside for your classmates and friends!
Enjoy this spring edition of the Newsletter, and take it as an opportunity to contribute to the Mount's Annual Fund. It is with your generosity and loyalty that the future is created.
Sincerely,
Dr. Anthony Miserandino

Rocco Commisso '67 Gives Real World Advice to Mount Entrepreneurs
|
|
Rocco B. Commisso visited the Mount on Tuesday, March 24 to speak to 165 Mount students, comprised of Mr. Ricky Rodriguez's Business Math Class and Mr. Chad Robinson's Economics Class.
A robust Q&A followed Rocco's seminar, as interested students looked for advice on how to succeed in business!
Rocco also gave feedback to students of Mr. Rodriguez's class who are creating "test" products and marketing them with online websites. The goal of the class is to come up with real product during the 2015/2016 school year that they can market and sell. This type of program for bright and enterprising students will no doubt reap wonderful dividends. We look forward to their ideas and advertising!

Release: 03/03/2015
The Ivy League announced its weekly award winners in men's basketball and Dartmouth guard Malik Gill was selected as the Co-Player of the Week for helping the Big Green complete a road sweep at Columbia and Cornell over the weekend. This is Gill's first career weekly honor and the fourth for a Dartmouth player this year.
He shared the award with Yale's Justin Sears, who led the Bulldogs to a pair of victories over Princeton and Penn to move back into a first-place tie with Harvard.
Gill, a 5-9 junior from New Rochelle, New York, scored 14 points in each of the two games while shooting 70 percent (7-of-10) from the floor, including 60 percent (3-of-5) from behind the three-point arc. He also hit clutch free throws in the waning minutes of both contests, converting all 11 of his attempts. Mr. Eugene P. Conese '47 passed away on March 19, 2015. Mr. Conese is survived by his son, Gene Conese, Jr., and his daughter, Deborah Conese Eagan, Members of Winged Foot Golf Club.
Mr. Matthew J. Merritt, Jr. '50 passed away on March 7, 2015. He was 83 years old. Born in Queens, N.Y. Sept. 15, 1931, he was the beloved son of Matthew J. and Grace Ferry Merritt. Matthew Merritt attended Mount St. Michael Preparatory School, received his undergraduate degree from St. John's University and his Law Degree from Fordham University. Matt Merritt founded Valleyhead and Bennington Schools and dedicated his life to helping at risk youth.
He was particularly fond of his local community and generously supported many organizations. He was also a true patriot and proudly served the United States Army as a First Lieutenant. He took his greatest pride in his family and held a deep and abiding love for them. He will be missed by so many and will never be forgotten.
His wife of nearly 50 years, Jerry Anne Merritt, passed three years ago. He leaves behind his loving children, Mary Elizabeth, Ellen, Matthew, Edward, Charles, and Magi; their partners; and his adored grandchildren, Ruby, Emma, Sam, Matthew, Eli, Cate and Elizabeth. He is also survived by his former wife, Dalija.
A memorial service will be held at St. Ann's Church in Lenox on April 11, at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Christian Center in Pittsfield, Mass. in care of the ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main Street, Lenox, MA 01240.
Mr. Thomas A. Barnard '54 passed away at the beginning of March.
Francis J. O'Rourke '57 passed away on the evening of March 24 after a prolonged illness of several years. He died at home surrounded by his loving wife, Jean and family.
Frank was the father of six children, three sons, and three daughters, all married, and the grandfather of 15 grandchildren some of whom have already graduated from college, or soon will. Frank and Jean would have been married for 54 years in May of this year.
Frank retired from his beloved NY City Fire Department in 1990, after 35 years of dedicated service, having risen thru the ranks to Battalion Chief. He was cited often for rescues he made, or assisted in, of fire victims. He was one of the founding members of the NYFD Bagpipe and Drum Band in the late 1950s, and learned to play the bagpipes by much hard and diligent practice. He marched in many a St. Patrick's Day Parade(s), and sadly at many NYFD funerals.
During the 1970s the Federal Government sponsored a program, due to the shortage of qualified RNs, for retiring police officers and firemen to undertake nursing studies at NYU Bellevue Hospital....but on their own time. It took him several years, but he graduated and passed the State exam and became a licensed RN. He didn't retire from the NYFD until 1990, but used that expertise to assist injured, and sick people, in emergency calls that the Fire Department responded to.

Why I Give
|
|
|
Joe Leanza '76
|
Joe Leanza '76: " I give because I want to brag that the Mount has provided an excellent Catholic education for nearly 100 years. I give to honor my teachers, coaches and parents who sacrificed to provide me with the tools I needed to shape my future.
I give because the young men of the Bronx deserve the same opportunities that I was given. Our donations enable hundreds of young men to achieve a top notch education in a environment that cultivates hard work and a sense of personal responsibility. Finally, I give because I love the Mount. There's just something about the place: the people, the history, the smell. It's hard to pinpoint, but it's real."
WHAT IS THE ANNUAL FUND?
Our Annual Fund bridges the gap between tuition and operating expenses. Your investment will provide funding for programs, activities and other expenses that the school incurs. Tuition and fees cover about 66% of total revenue collected, which is why we need to rely on your support.
When you give to the Annual Fund, your dollars help fund advanced curriculum in programs like Sports Medicine, IT and Business, as well as strengthening our athletic programs and extracurricular activities.
- Offer need-based financial support
- Drive excellence in curriculum and scholastic advancement
- Strengthen our athletic programs
- Provide state-of-the-art technology
- Make repairs to school facilities and grounds

Bro. James Bantz Memorial Scholarship
|
|
The Bro. John Bantz Memorial Scholarship was established as a non-endowed scholarship in the fall of 2014 to honor the memory and legacy of Mount's former President. Bro. John served at the Mount for 31 years in a variety of roles: as Junior HS Principal, Guidance Counselor, and Development Director.
He stood ready to serve the school in whatever task was required to enhance and move forward the academic and co-curricular program. Prior to his service at the Mount, Bro. John taught math for many years at various Marist schools.
Bro. John was an avid sports fan and was present on the field, off the court or around the track for three seasons, year in and year out. He knew the names of all the students participating in an activity.
The scholarship award will be given to a graduating senior, who exhibits the qualities of character so well illustrated in Bro. John's life: a spirit of good sportsmanship, a love of math and a record of service to the Mount community.

Malik Gill '10
| |
On Friday, Gill came off the bench in the first half with his team trailing, 17-13, and went right to work with assists on two buckets to tie the game and a breakaway layup off a long rebound to give Dartmouth the lead. In the second half with the score tied at 51, he fueled an 18-4 run with three assists, a three-pointer and a conventional three-point play. Gill then proceeded to knock down six foul shots in the final three minutes to help seal the win.
Less than 24 hours later, Gill spearheaded a 16-2 run to end the first half with a pair of triples, two assists and a steal as Dartmouth took a 26-14 advantage into the locker room. When the Big Red whittled a 20-point deficit down to eight in a two-minute span, Gill was there to stem the tide, stealing a pass and assisting on a fast-break layup. He also provided a driving layup to keep the difference at 10, then sank four free throws in the final 1:35 to secure the sweep.
