President's Letter

Dear Colleagues, Alumni, and Friends of the Mount,
The current newsletter reflects a strong theme of continuity between the past and the future. The Spiked Shoe Induction Ceremony and the Legends of the Mount Dinner bring to the fore the great Mount tradition of educating the whole person. We are very proud of the accomplishments of the men selected for these honors.
Both events acknowledge the spirit of giving and caring so typical of the Mount of the past, and the recent gathering of the International Marist Youth Leadership Conference in Mexico shows that the future is in good hands.
In addition, you will read about the recent dinner for newly accepted students at the Mount. The Class of 2019 is shaping up to be among the largest and most talented in recent years. The Mount saw a significant increase in the number of students applying to the Mount, listing us as a 1st choice among three possible choices, and saw more students applying in the 90%tile+ in each of the possible choices of 1st, 2nd or 3rd. An academic grand slam!
As always, these many achievements can only be realized by the generous support of our many benefactors. If you haven't done so, may I ask you to take a few minutes and donate to the Mount now before you finish reading the newsletter. This way you won't forget us in the shuffle of a busy schedule.
Your generous and loyal support is what makes the past so much a part of the future.
Sincerely,
Dr. Anthony Miserandino

Mount Students Attend Leadership Conference In Mexico
|
|
By Bro. Brian Poulin FMS, center, surrounded by students who attended the International Marist Youth Leadership Conference in Jalisco, Mexico.
On Ash Wednesday, 2015, Bro. Brian Poulin and five Mount students- Daniel Cruz '15, Jeffrey Medina '15, Daniel and Darniel Figueroa 16, and Jorge Dumas '17- departed for Guadalajara to take part in the International Marist Youth Leadership Camp in the mountains near Tapalpa, Jalisco. Two other delegations from the USA and those of 16 Marist schools in Mexico joined the Mount group.
The natural beauty was stunning, and most in our delegation had never before seen so many stars at night! Because Spanish was the official language of the conference, communication sometimes came with difficulty, but thanks to the great hospitality of their Mexican counterparts, our Mountaineers quickly formed friendships that not only span this country but crossed the border as well.
Although it was natural for one or two of the students to deal with homesickness at first, by the close of the five-day program none were ready to return home. While there were formal opportunities to share culture and develop leadership and communication skills through assorted activities and workshops, the widely acclaimed highlight of the event was a Day of Solidarity, in which students experienced for several hours the difficulty of life as a Mexican day laborer and how quickly their meager earnings disappear.
This day of work and budgeting was capped by a three hour hike back to the campsite, as none had been able to save enough money for transportation. Whether or not they actually enjoyed every aspect of the day, all students came away with a greater compassion for those for whom such conditions are constant, or even enviable.
Between the unforgettable experiences shared, the newly unbreakable bonds formed, and the indescribable mountainous beauty that framed it all, the enthusiasm that all participants felt for the whole camp can best be summed up in the four words chanted by the group at the camp's closing address: "No me quiero ir"-"I don't want to go!"

2014/2015 Annual Fund:
Why I Give
|
|
|
Joe Leanza '76
|
Joe Leanza '76: " I give because I want to brag that the Mount has provided an excellent Catholic education for nearly 100 years. I give to honor my teachers, coaches and parents who sacrificed to provide me with the tools I needed to shape my future.
I give because the young men of the Bronx deserve the same opportunities that I was given. Our donations enable hundreds of young men to achieve a top notch education in a environment that cultivates hard work and a sense of personal responsibility. Finally, I give because I love the Mount. There's just something about the place: the people, the history, the smell. It's hard to pinpoint, but it's real."
WHAT IS THE ANNUAL FUND?
Our Annual Fund bridges the gap between tuition and operating expenses. Your investment will provide funding for programs, activities and other expenses that the school incurs. Tuition and fees cover about 66% of total revenue collected, which is why we need to rely on your support.

- Offer need-based financial support
- Drive excellence in curriculum and scholastic advancement

Bro. James Bantz Memorial Scholarship
|
|
The Bro. John Bantz Memorial Scholarship was established as a non-endowed scholarship in the fall of 2014 to honor the memory and legacy of Mount's former President. Bro. John served at the Mount for 31 years in a variety of roles: as Junior HS Principal, Guidance Counselor, and Development Director.
He stood ready to serve the school in whatever task was required to enhance and move forward the academic and co-curricular program. Prior to his service at the Mount, Bro. John taught math for many years at various Marist schools.
Bro. John was an avid sports fan and was present on the field, off the court or around the track for three seasons, year in and year out. He knew the names of all the students participating in an activity.
The scholarship award will be given to a graduating senior, who exhibits the qualities of character so well illustrated in Bro. John's life: a spirit of good sportsmanship, a love of math and a record of service to the Mount community.
