President's Letter
|
|
Dear Colleagues, Alumni, and Friends,
For the past 44 years I have enjoyed a privileged position in life - I have served in public and Catholic schools as a teacher, mentor and administrator. I have taught students from Sunday school to graduate school. It has been a wonderful ride and a great journey. However, I am ready for the next chapter in a richly textured biography. Hence, I will be retiring as President of Mount Saint Michael Academy in June.
I fell under the spell of the promises and possibilities that education offers to all. I taught in the footsteps of the great teaching orders of the Catholic Church: the Marist Brothers and the Jesuits. I was fortunate to have more than my fair share of wonderful and inspiring teachers. I treasure many of them as life-long friends today. I continue to benefit from the friendship of former students. I have a cohort of colleagues gathered over many years that I count as my good fortune. Keep Reading

Mount Freshman Ryan Barnes '18 Gets Paid Internship as Learning Ambassador!
|
|
 |
Ryan Barnes '18 to the right of Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who honored students at the Courage, Commitment and Character Awards at the Yonkers Public Library in August of 2014.
|
A big congratulations to Mount Freshman Ryan Barnes, who will be serving as a Learning Ambassador during a paid summer internship in the Great Potential Partnership Program (GPPP) run by SUNY Purchase with the Westchester County Library system in the children's section as a Learning Ambassador.
We think Ryan's mom, Diana, tells the story well:
"Ryan has belonged to the GPPP and has worked in their library programs since middle school, when the family originally lived in New Rochelle, and has thrived. I can't say enough about how great the program is: it is dedicated to giving internships that help professionally shape young adults in underserved communities.
Ryan participated in their family weekend retreat at SUNY Purchase College in June of 2014. The training is 5 full-days: Saturdays plus 16 Community Service Hours, starting in February. One Saturday per month there is a full day of training, that includes an assignment of four hours of monthly service at the library to which they will be assigned for the summer internship.
Upon successful completion of the training, students are guaranteed the summer internship, and receive a bonus payment for completion of the training. The internships start in late June and run through late August. Participants are paid minimum wage, and have the opportunity to work up to 20 hours per week for the 6-8wk internship.

The Mount Players- A Musical Theater Program in Full Swing!
|
|
 |
Mount Players study sheet music for the spring play The Heights
|
The Mount Players is a full hands-on Musical Theatre Program, which runs from December to April. Students meet three times a week including weekends learning choreography, acting and theatre exercises. Students also work with a talented and professional Musical Director in which the students learn the musical score of the current show that the students will be performing.
Our Musical Theatre Program also gives students an opportunity to be part of the production design process through Stage Crew. Students learn how to use power tools, paint, lighting design, and are active members of the set design process. Stage Crew members also are responsible for moving the sets on and off stage during the nights of the performances.
Being a Catholic School with a growing Theatre Arts Program means that the cost of materials (costumes, props, set construction material, lights, etc.) has strained our Mount Players budget. Any donations or grants would help cut the cost of materials but also aid in enhancing the production quality with professional materials. Keep Reading

Jassett Founsett and son Anton Porter '15
|
Anton Porter '15 grew up playing soccer in St. Elizabeth, one of Jamaica's largest parishes, located in the southwest of the island, in the county of Cornwall. He probably did not know it then, but he was destined to follow in the footsteps of his mother Jassett Founset, a star athlete at Black River Primary School and Black River Secondary School in St. Elizabeth's. Jassett says, "I did it all! All track and field events, netball, volleyball, all of it."
It is Jassett's passion for athletics that inspired Anton. He says, "My mother encouraged me to try out for track and field in addition to soccer my freshman year at the Mount--we had just arrived from Jamaica a few months earlier."
Mom knew best, since Anton has had an incredibly strong career at the Mount in both soccer and track. In Mount soccer, Anton was a 4-year starter as Striker, and led Mount to NY Archdiocese Championships as well as the CHSAA North Division Championship with 23 goals and 15 assists. He was named NY Post Bronx All League in all 4 years, and named CHSAA A Division All League 2012,2013,2014.
Anton finished Mount with 63 goals and 35 assists and was the captain of the soccer team for 3 years. Says Coach Michael Boyle, "In the over 30 years of coaching soccer he was and is the greatest athlete I ever coached."
Anton has excelled in track as well and is currently ranked in the top 5 in the nation in the 200m dash and number 3 in the 300m dash. Click here for Anton's career stats in track! There are way too many to list!
He is now ready to take it to the college level. Keep Reading

2014/2015 Annual Fund:
Why I Give
|
|
 |
Joe Leanza '76
|
Joe Leanza '76: " I give because I want to brag that the Mount has provided an excellent Catholic education for nearly 100 years. I give to honor my teachers, coaches and parents who sacrificed to provide me with the tools I needed to shape my future.
I give because the young men of the Bronx deserve the same opportunities that I was given. Our donations enable hundreds of young men to achieve a top notch education in a environment that cultivates hard work and a sense of personal responsibility. Finally, I give because I love the Mount. There's just something about the place: the people, the history, the smell. It's hard to pinpoint, but it's real."
WHAT IS THE ANNUAL FUND?
Our Annual Fund bridges the gap between tuition and operating expenses. Your investment will provide funding for programs, activities and other expenses that the school incurs. Tuition and fees cover about 66% of total revenue collected, which is why we need to rely on your support.
When you give to the Annual Fund, your dollars help fund advanced curriculum in programs like Sports Medicine, IT and Business, as well as strengthening our athletic programs and extracurricular activities.
- Offer need-based financial support
- Drive excellence in curriculum and scholastic advancement
- Strengthen our athletic programs
- Provide state-of-the-art technology
- Make repairs to school facilities and grounds

Bro. James Bantz Memorial Scholarship
|
|
The Bro. John Bantz Memorial Scholarship was established as a non-endowed scholarship in the fall of 2014 to honor the memory and legacy of Mount's former President. Bro. John served at the Mount for 31 years in a variety of roles: as Junior HS Principal, Guidance Counselor, and Development Director.
He stood ready to serve the school in whatever task was required to enhance and move forward the academic and co-curricular program. Prior to his service at the Mount, Bro. John taught math for many years at various Marist schools.
Bro. John was an avid sports fan and was present on the field, off the court or around the track for three seasons, year in and year out. He knew the names of all the students participating in an activity.
The scholarship award will be given to a graduating senior, who exhibits the qualities of character so well illustrated in Bro. John's life: a spirit of good sportsmanship, a love of math and a record of service to the Mount community.

I will continue to find new challenges in retirement. I hope to live in the spirit of the founder of the Marist Brothers who encouraged his followers to "live with a heart that knows no bounds." If education is a journey, then I hope to continue to be challenged by complex questions, encourage others around me to listen and to learn, and to accompany them as we wrestle with the needs that confront our world.
Dorothy Day noted that "you will know your vocation by the joy it brings you. You will know. You will know when it's right." I believe in the truth of her observation and I am grateful for the joy that being an educator has brought me.
Thank you for allowing me to serve at the Mount for many fruitful and productive years. The Mount has been one of the many blessings in my life and I am grateful for the opportunity it offered me to grow personally and professionally and, more importantly, to make a contribution to the lives of great young people.
As for the immediate future, I have an appointment as a Visiting Research Scholar at Oxford University (Blackfriars Hall) in the fall. In the spring I will return to teaching as an Adjunct Professor at the Graduate School of Education at Fordham University.
Sincerely,
Dr. Anthony Miserandino

What I like most about this program is first, it's just for 9th graders (Do you know how hard it is for 9th graders to get jobs?!). They have to submit an application, resume/essay, are given a phone interview, and an in-person interview with their assigned Librarian Mentor, who is with them from January through August 2015 all this prior to training.
Upon receiving positive reviews, they are then allowed to start training in Feb, 2015. Ryan is being considered for both the New Rochelle & Larchmont Public Libraries, they both showed great interest in Ryan, based upon meeting the basic criteria, his application, and resume/essay. He will be assigned the library before Training, so he has interviewed with both libraries, and they both still want him. The skills and the opportunity that Ryan will experience is priceless, it really prepares them for their future internships & jobs, teaches them responsibility & commitment. The second thing I like about this program, is the rigorous process they take the candidates through: having several levels of interviews, the combination of both the all-day Saturday, and the 4 hour service/on the job training for months prior to the start of their internship. I'm so proud of Ryan, and grateful to all of you at the Mount who helped both of us either professionally or personally to get here. We Thank You. Of course we will keep you posted as Ryan goes through this process, both he and I are so excited, but he says I may be a bit more excited--of course! I'm a mom!"

Mount Players
|
|
The Mount Players is a program that continues in our school mission, because through the arts, children and communities can come together in celebration of creativity, and children are given a different medium of expression.
This year, The Mount Players musical production is In The Heights. With the growing cost of production from sets, to costumes, sound and lighting we are asking you to help make our children's dream come to life and on stage with our Booster Advertisement Program, which will reach over 800 viewers.
The Boosters will provide funding which will help make this production possible in hope that we can keep the Mount Players an active program for our schools for years to come. We cannot continue or program without your financial support.
Please consider a contribution to Mount Saint Michael Players:
$25 (1/4 Page Ad.)
$50 (1/2 Page Ad.)
$100 (Full Page Ad.)
or any other generous donation!!
Contact Bro. Steve Schlitte if you are interested at steve.schlitte@mtstmichael.org or Julie Androshick Boyle at julie.androshick@mtstmichael.org, tel 718 515 6400 ext. 268. As always, these contributions are tax-deductible. Checks can be made payable to Mount Saint Michael Academy.
Our students will be deeply grateful for your support. Again we thank you immensely and hope that you can be part of this magical experience!
Thank you and God bless,
Brother Steve Schlitte, Principal and Mr. Marc Silva, Director
