Vol 4 Issue 7, July 15, 2014
President's Letter

A great graduation weekend was celebrated by both the Class of 2014 and the Class of 1964. Over 80 graduates and their guests enjoyed a wonderful weekend of activities together.

The 50th Anniversary class was greeted by thunderous applause from the Class of 2014 as they marched in academic regalia to join the ceremony.

Connecting the past with the present and future is

a wonderful article about the success of

Sean Combs '87. His thoughtful and challenging speech at Howard University was extraordinarily well received by the graduates.

The 24th Annual Golf Outing was a terrific  success. The Mount continues to have the premier golf outing among NY area Catholic High Schools. A special treat this year was the address given by Caraun Reid '09, a Mount and then Princeton University Graduate. Caraun was drafted by the Detroit Lions and will be showcasing his expertise against the NY Jets in September. He is among the top rookies this year after a superb collegiate career as an All-American, All Ivy standout player for three years running!

Check the school website for pics from the Annual President's Council Dinner. Our student speaker was Sam Oliver '14. Sam will be studying, on an academic scholarship, at Duke University in the Fall.

In closing it is important to note that both Sam and Caraun benefited from economic support from the Mount. They have achieved much through the generous support of our Alums and Friends of the Mount. They, along with many other deserving students, count on the Mount to help their family make ends meet in the pursuit of a great Mount education. There are a lot more students like them at the Mount in need of your support.

Mount Class of 2014 Celebrates Graduation

Mount Principal Bro. Steve Schlitte FMS presents 2014 grad Franklin Richards with the Mount Plaque for School Spirit, awarded to the senior who has manifested the most loyalty to the school.

The  Class of 2014 graduated on Saturday June 7, 2014 to a gymnasium packed with proud families and friends.  51% of our  graduating seniors received scholarships to college, an estimated $8.4 million over 4 years.

Valedictorian Antonio Alberti spoke to his fellow graduates about their growth, development and irreplaceable memories at the Mount and about myriad opportunities they have now in their futures.

Dr. Anthony Miserandino spoke about the power and global impact of education. He encouraged the graduates to attain as much formal education as possible in order to extend and complement their talents and gifts:

"When you are educated you can change the world. Maya Angelou said it this way: I did what I knew, when I knew better, I did better. That's what your parents want: a better world for you than they had. As a Mount family, we want a better world as demonstrated by people caring for each other."

Sean Combs' 2014 Howard University Commencement Speech
Sean Combs '87 Howard University Commencement Speech, May 10, 2014. Click to Play!

Mount St. Michael Academy students, alum and staff were delighted and proud to be invited to  Howard University's 146th  Commencement Ceremony  and to support  Mount alum and media mogul Sean Combs '87, the keynote speaker for the graduation. Combs graduated from Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx in 1987, and attended Howard in the late 1980s. Combs is chairman, chief executive officer and founder of Combs Enterprises, one of the world's preeminent group of companies and brands.

Combs' talked to the Howard grads and the audience in attendance about how "each one of you needs to make your own light and realize how powerful you actually are to get out of a really tough situation. You should realize that sometimes achieving dreams takes longer than one thinks, but be decisive and not afraid to fail. " These inspirational words  resonated with everyone at Howard that day. We have the clip above so be sure to see the entire speech.

Recently declared "One of the Most Influential People in the World" by Time Magazine and CNN, Combs has built a reputation as a master brand builder, pop culture icon and champion of youth education and entrepreneurship. Under the Combs Enterprises umbrella, he oversees a broad range of businesses including REVOLT, the new music-oriented platform for television, web and mobile; Bad Boy Entertainment; Sean John; Combs Wines and Spirits - Ciroc Vodka and DeLeon Tequila; and the Blue Flame Agency.

Combs also hosted a private luncheon after the ceremony at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. for friends and family.

The Mount would like to say THANK YOU to all those who participated again this year in the Mount Saint Michael Academy's 24th Annual Golf Outing At Metropolis Country Club in White Plains, NY. Due to the generosity of many of our alumni and friends the outing continues to grow in participation and sponsorship.

A vibrant silent auction and along with our first tennis clinic and tournament only added to fun the outing delivers each year. We'd like to thank our guest speaker Caraun Reid '09, his father Bishop Reid and his brother Caryl Reid for participating and sharing Caraun's family's journey from the Bronx, to Princeton University, to the NFL.

Tateich Calhoun, a seventh grader at the Mount Middle School, his father William Calhoun and Bro. Steve Schlitte enjoy the weather and terrace at the Metropolis Golf Club at the annual golf outing.

We'd also like to thank our Mount parents in attendance, as well as our student volunteers who helped represent and deliver the Good News happening on the corner of Nereid and Murdock Avenues today to the event.

Next year will mark the 25th Anniversary of the event that has helped supply much needed tuition assistance to many deserving students and their families for the past 24 years. Students like Caraun Reid!

Mount is Building for the Future!

The parapets are being repaired and energy efficient windows are being installed as part of a major restoration.

The Mount has begun an extensive two-year program to restore and improve facilities. As a first step in the process rigorous Facilities Audit was completed in June of 2013 by an outside professional engineering firm. Their recommendations were accepted as a blueprint for the current renovations.

New sidewalks are being poured all along the perimeter of the Mount.

Critical repairs include replacing roofs and windows and making repairs to the plumbing, electrical, and ventilation systems.

While much of the work is not readily visible, this prudent infrastructure investment will preserve and restore the iconic buildings that will serve students at the Mount for many years to come.

Mount Receives Computer Room Grant from Retired NYPD Detectives

Dr. Anthony Miserandino, left,  accepts an award from the NYC Detectives Endowment Association. He is pictured with, from left to right, DEA's President Detective Michael Palladino, Anna Venditti, AM, and Det. William McNeely

On Thursday, June 26, 2014 the NYC Detectives' Endowment Association (DEA) held their annual BBQ and Picnic. This yearly event rotates among the five NYC boroughs, and the Association reached out to the Mount to host for this year's event.  The Mount has a long history of sponsoring a variety of police and fire department benefits.

What made this year's event special was that the DEA was seeking to honor the memory of a Mount alum and long time members of the Association, Det. Anthony Venditti '69. Detective Venditti was killed in the line of service in 1986.

His family and friends created a scholarship in his honor and a Computer Room is dedicated to his memory. The DEA's President Detective Michael Palladino awarded the Mount $10,000 to continue to provide for the enhancement of the Mount's technology program.  On an historical note: Dr. Miserandino taught Mrs. Vendetti's other son Pat who is a 1971 graduate of the Mount .
