President's Letter
|
|
Dear Alum and Friends of the Mount,
Let me warmly welcome you to the latest update on life at the Mount. This is an exciting report since it speaks directly to the two grand objectives of a Mount education: academic excellence and matching success in the classroom and beyond.
Since we are approaching Super Bowl Sunday I suppose it is inevitable not to highlight some of our talented young alums and one great NFL leader. You will read about two alums that have had an impact on Ivy League sports in football and basketball. Both Caraun and Malik (Princeton and Dartmouth) won academic scholarships which allowed them to showcase their skill in and out of the classroom.
The academic life-cycle of the Mount continues with the father-son legacy of the Grant family and the enrollment of yet another son of an alum at the Mount. It is always a great moment at graduation when an Alum Dad can join us in awarding his son a Mount diploma.
The Mount was represented at the Grammay Awards, and there is a great photo of Frank Ingriselli '72 proudly showing off his Mount heritage. Mark Noble '85 was also working the room, and the two of them had fun promoting the Mount among other "stars"...Ad Astra....
Lastly, you will be introduced to two alums who have been generous benefactors of the Mount. Bill Polian '60 needs no introduction. However, John Strachan '38, who has recently passed away, made it possible for many Mount students to graduate through his very strong support of our scholarship program. He single-handedly helped over two dozen students cross the finish line to graduation.
As you will discover as you go through the newsletter, we have a great
tradition of support and caring for the Mount. The legacy of older alums is strongly and eagerly continued by the kids in college. From one generation to the next the challenge of St. Marcellin Champagnat is readily embraced: learning to live "with hearts that know no bounds."
We would have it no other way!
Sincerely,
Dr. Anthony Miserandino

Mount Young Alum Shine As Scholar Athletes
|
|
Mount Young Alum are making a name for themselves and for the Mount in college sports.
Former Mount Saint Michael football star and NCAA college football All American honoree Caraun Reid MSM '09 of Princeton Tigers Defensive Tackle has been turning the heads of NFL scouts.

Caraun Reid '09
Fresh off a strong showing in the NCAA Senior Bowl. Caruan has further impressed scout with his size and athleticism at NFL Skills Camps. Caruan's draft stock is on the rise and hopefully we'll be watching him this fall playing in the NFL with our home town Giants or Jet teams. Caruan was the first Princton Tigers gridiron star from Princeton to receive All American honors in the last 20 years! Impressive! Good luck Caruan!

Another Mount collegiate student-athlete to receive national recognition is Najae Brown '12. The University of New Haven defensive back and freshman football star has been named the Don Hansen Division II National Freshman of the Year. Najae was a talented quarterback of the Mountaineer football team in his senior year that defeated Cardinal Hayes in the 2011 Turkey Bowl 34-0. A nice day for the Mount!

Najae Brown '12
|
The award marks Brown's first national honor of his young career. The Mount Vernon, N.Y. native was the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Year and a NE-10 First Team selection following his first season at corner back for UNH. Brown led the Chargers' defense with 78 total tackles, including 56 solo stops. He intercepted three passes and broke up nine passes.
Mount young alum Malik Gill'12 is playing very well in the Ivy League for Dartmouth!! Even though Dartmouth lost to Harvard, Mount Saint Michael All City standout Malik Gill '12 had a big game versus Harvard recording a Dartmouth team high of 16 points, 5 assists and 6 steal for the Big Green of Dartmouth Colleg

Under Construction: The Sports Medicine Training Facility!
|
|
Mount St. Michael Academy is proud to announce that the construction of the new Sports Medicine Training Facility is well under way!!!
Thanks to the generosity of Alison and Buzz Zaino '61, Dr. Anthony Maddalo '72, Ben Borsellino '73, John Farrauto '57 and Dr. Richard Bolton '64 a new Sports Medicine training facility is being built near the Mount locker rooms. In addition, a generous grant from the Hyde and Watson Foundation of $10,000 is helping to purchase the equipment needed for the room, such as treatment tables, a hydrocollator to warm heating pads, storage cabinets and a new whirlpool turbine.
The facility will be a lab where students in the Sports Medicine program will learn to diagnose, treat, tape and rehabilitate like professional trainers.

The room is approximately 1200 Square Feet, including main room, office and shower room. The Sports Medicine Program started in 2012: Currently 42 students (sophomores, juniors and seniors) are registered in the program, taking advanced courses in biology, anatomy, math and sciences and learning the core principals and practices of athletic training.
They participate in the Mentoring in Medicine program at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx and receive expert lectures from Sports Medicine professionals on and off campus at least once a month.
The Mount is also building a solid externship program in which Sports Medicine students will intern with trainers at colleges, with orthopedic doctors and surgeons and with other professionals in Sports Medicine and related fields.

|
The program offers students a sound practical specialization that will prepare them for success at university while at the same time opening up a host of professional opportunities.
Says Bro. Steve Schlitte FMS: " The new training room facility is the next step in development of our program. We are looking forward to a comprehensive 4 year program that will open up multiple medical career opportunities to students by preparing them for entrance into top notch pre professional programs on the collegiate level."

Fall 2014 Freshman Enjoy Pizza With the Players!
| |
 |
L to R: incoming freshmen Brian Grant, Mount Senior Jayson Buford and Brian's father Rob Grant, himself a 1988 Mount grad.
|
On Thursday evening, January 30, more than 40 prospective and incoming freshmen and their parents enjoyed a Mount tradition: watching the Mountaineer Basketball Team play and then sitting down to pizza with the players to talk about the experience of being a Mount student.
This is the Mount's 4th year doing the event, and is held after the Mount sends out its acceptance letters to the 8th grade.

Bill Polian '60:
A Super Alum at Super Bowl
|
|
 |
Bill Polian '60
|
The Mount would like to thank Bill Polian '60 for his generosity to the Mount: Bill donated 4 Super Bowl tickets to the Mount Golf Outing last year, which helped raise needed money for Mount scholarships!
Four lucky winners of the Mount raffle will be going to the SuperBowl this Sunday, February 2, at MetLife Stadium to see the Denver Broncos and four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning battle the Seattle Seahawks.
Polian will be watching this game especially closely, since he knows Peyton Manning better than most: Polian has the distinction of drafting Manning in the first round of the 1998 NFL draft, when one could say history was made. Peyton Manning is arguably one of the top quarterbacks in the history of the NFL.
Polian was interviewed at length about Manning's legacy in the Daily News on January 29, 2014, and how Polian already thinks Manning is one of the best quarterbacks of all time, even without winning the Superbowl this Sunday.

Polian's ESPN role focuses on the NFL Draft, free agency and the multitude of other business-related aspects of pro football, including player transactions, trades, salary cap issues and league rules.
One of the most accomplished front office executives in NFL history, Polian helped build multiple successful franchises during his 24 years as a general manager. In all, his teams made 17 playoff, eight conference championship game and five Super Bowl appearances, including the Super Bowl XLI champion Indianapolis Colts. He also has the distinction of having drafted four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning, arguably one of the top players ever to play the position.
Widely praised as both a top talent evaluator and influential executive, Polian is the first six-time recipient (1988, 1991, 1995, 1996, 1999 and 2009) of the NFL Executive of the Year award from The Sporting News, an honor bestowed on him by his peers. He served on several league committees: Competition Committee, Diversity Committee, Management Council Senior Executive Committee and Chairman of the College Relations Committee. He also played a key role in the NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement in 2011 that prevented the loss of regular season games, establishing long-term labor peace.
