President's Letter

Dear Alums and Friends of the Mount,
We welcome you to our latest e-newsletter. As always, you will read about some terrific people within our community. Ours is a community very much alive to the needs of young people, and to equipping them for a future which is really beyond their imagination.
Service and caring are the benchmarks of the Mount community. Some examples to give flesh to the words: We have our student choir singing Christmas carols on behalf of the Inner City Scholarship Fund Gala Celebration, we had a wonderful group of 20 alum who came to discuss opportunities in various fields with our Juniors and Seniors on Career Day, we have Mount faculty supporting the needs of almost a dozen families in a local shelter by supplying Christmas gifts to all members of the family, and we have the National Honor Society tutoring their peers to ensure academic success. We even have a group of students developing a phone app to make managing student academic life run more effectively.
We are grateful for many blessings as we approach this holiday season. We have had an increase in people donating to the Annual Fund. This is the critical source of assistance to ensure that students in financial need can maintain their careers at the Mount. We still have many families in economic need and ask your help in maintaining the mission of the Mount in their lives.
Lastly, our Christmas wish to you: Blessings beyond measure and the grace to realize the full impact of an event sure to stir your imagination and soul - have a wonderfully holiday with your family and friends.
I wish you and your family and friends a wonderful Christmas and New Years Holiday.
Sincerely,
Dr. Anthony Miserandino

Hayes Tackles Mount to Win
Turkey Bowl

Mount Running Back Darius Hodges '15 darts past a Hayes Tackle during the Turkey Bowl
|
A capacity crowd filled Promuto Stadium to watch Hayes and Mount compete for two trophies the AA Joe Lemas Memorial Award and The Hayes-Mount Mens Club Trophy. In a well played and hard fought match Hayes scored a late 4th quarter touchdown to secure a 20-16 victory over the Mountaineers. Mount led through much of the game but an unfortunate fumble on the Hayes one yard line prevented Mount from increasing their lead. Hayes capitalized with a game winning 60 yard 10 play drive that led to the winning score.
The Mount squad battled through a season fraught with adversity dealing with the death of their teammate and classmate Matthew Wallace in late September, then losing some close early season battles. Coach Valentini in his 30th year as varsity head coach steadied the team and the Mountaineers found their stride late in the season to advance to the AA Championship game versus a strong Cardinal team.
As the annual Turkey Bowl rivalry continues both teams and student bodies displayed the sportsmanship and passion would make all alumni from both Bronx schools proud.

Seniors from the 1977 Mountaineer team celebrated their 32-0 victory over Hayes and remembered their legendary coach

 |
Michael Muzyk '78, the 2013 Career Day Keynote Speaker, talks to two students at Career Day about the necessity of hard work and true grit when facing career and life choices.
|
Mount St. Michael Academy held its Annual Career Day on Friday, December 6. We were very lucky to have 20 alum come back to the Mount to talk about opportunities in careers that included IT and Media, Journalism, Pharmaceuticals, Secret Service, Construction and Food Services.
 |
Secret Service Agent Charles "Chuck" Davis, who guarded President Clinton, talks to a Senior about the career path in the Secret Service.
|
The Guest Speaker was Michael Muzyk '78, President of Baldor Foods, who talked candidly to students about the challenges he faced when he was their age and how an education and a foundation of faith received from his years at the Mount changed his life. Michael, who had a very successful career as an international chef and is now the president of one of the largest food distributors in the U.S., also faced difficulties as a parent raising a disabled child.
But Michael's unwavering belief and perseverance that he could help make things better for his son acted as a catalyst for him to build a meaningful personal life and professional career. Keep Reading

Mount Students Compete in Verizon App Challenge

Click to see Merge, an App concept created by Mount students for the Verizon Innovative App Challenge
|
Six Mount students with a vision for change teamed up to create a brand new App for the Verizon 2013 App Challenge, open to Middle and High School Students. Teams had to submit a video and an essay detailing their App concept, including how it would help their immediate community, what problems it would solve and how it used STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) principles.
 | Mark Mora '14 |
Led by Mark Mora '14 and Kai Cash '15, and advised by Director of Development Julie Androshick Boyle, the team of Donovan Salmon '15, Corey Seaton '15, Matthew Barrett '15 and Keith Ignacio '14, designed a concept for an app that would revolutionize the way teachers and students interact.
Their App, named Merge, synthesizes various classroom functions and integrates them into an easy to use interface between teacher and students.
Because students and teachers would be using tablets or iphones for the interaction, the classroom would be paperless, so the environment is helped, and lessons are shared much more efficiently.

A Marine from the Bronx presents John Flahive, cousin of William Flahive, with the American Flag
|
On a sunny and brisk November morning a name of a fallen Mount alumnus was added to the Class of 1963 Viet Nam Memorial Flag Pole. Capt. William J. Flahive Jr. USMC was tragically slain defending our freedom in the town of Quang Tri, Viet Nam in 1968. A highly decorated Marine officer William graduated the Mount grade school in 1957. He was 24 years young at the time of his death.
His grade school classmate John McCarthy '61 brother of another fallen Viet Nam vet USA Cpl. Peter McCarthy '63 requested that William's name be added to the memorial plaque at the base of the flag pole that honors Mount Alumni who laid down their lives to defend our freedom. The Mount graciously took on the honor of inviting William's family to the dedication ceremony. Twenty members of the Flahive family proudly traveled to the Mount Saint Michael Academy and joined our community to honor William's memory and sacrifice.
"The hero we are celebrating this morning joins the ranks of those who have preserved our freedom," said Mount Saint Michael President Dr. Anthony Miserandino in his speech to the assembly, "We add the name of William J. Flahive Jr. to this memorial as a reminder that the Mount and our alumni have a long commitment to service of our country." Keep Reading

Marist Development Teams Share the Marist Mission at Esopus
|
| In early December, Development Teams from Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, FL, Marist Bayonne, NJ, Marist Chicago, IL, Central Catholic in Lawrence, Massachusetts, St. Josephs Academy in Brownsville, Texas and the Mount joined together at Esopus for a weekend of workshop conversation and reflection on the values of Marcellin Champagnat, and how those values of service can be expanded to all Marist alumni communities.
The group met with Marist Brothers Steve Milan FMS, John Klein FMS and Dominic Puglia FMS to talk about how to better bring the Marist message of caring for all as Mary and Christ would to the alumni communities of all of the Marist Schools throughout the United States. The result was that the group will be working to launch a National Day of Marist Service, which will involve all Marist High School communities. A special focus will be on alumni participation.

Richie Guerin '50 will have his number, 14, retired from Iona College in a ceremony at halftime of the Iona vs. Manhattan basketball game on Friday, January 31st. Richie a 2013 inductee into NBA Hall of Fame as a player for the NY Knicks and the St. Louis/Atlanta Hawks.
This will be the first number retired in Iona College Athletics history. Richie was honored as a Legend of the Mount in 2006. Congratulations Richie!
Louis Trombetta '64 married Mariann in 1972 & had twin boys David & Damian in 1976. Now they have been blessed with 2 Grandson Julian & Lucas. Louis is Professor and Chairman at St. Johns University College of Pharmacy.
Robert Jackson '88 is helping to raise money for a prosthetic arm for Christopher Kiezek, 6, of East Northport, Long Island. Christopher was born without part of his left arm. On a recent visit to see Santa Claus, Christopher whispered a secret wish: he wanted an Xbox One and fingers to play with it. Jackson, a family friend of the Kiezeks', was so moved he started fundraising. He hopes to raise $25,000 by Christmas. .
Caraun Reid '09, Princeton defensive tackle, has accepted an invitation to play in the 2014 Senior Bowl, the school announced. The Senior Bowl is one of football's premier pre-draft events. NFL Network coverage included Senior Bowl week practices and continued with the game, which will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014.
Reid has 3.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, five quarterback hurries, an interception and a blocked kick this season. He has 37 tackles for loss and 17.5 sacks in his career and is a two-time All-Ivy League pick. He will be just the second Princeton player to play in the Senior Bowl; offensive tackle Holland Donan played in the 1951 game.
Reid seems a lock to be just the third Princeton player drafted since 1990 and the seventh since 1973. Defensive end Mike Catapano (6-4, 270), who lined up next to Reid with the Tigers, was a seventh-round pick by Kansas City in the 2013 draft. He has played in nine games for the Chiefs.
"His statistics don't reflect the impact he has had on our defense this season, but he has been a destructive force who has seen double and triple teams all year," Princeton coach Bob Surace said in a release on the school's website. "His leadership has been invaluable as well. He is the ultimate presence both on the field and in the locker room."
Reid is the second defensive tackle to accept a Senior Bowl invitation, joining Virginia's Brent Urban.
