A Mount contingent was at Columbia on October 12, 2013, to cheer on Rocco Commisso '67 when Columbia named their Soccer Venue for Rocco: from left to right, Mount president Dr. Anthony Miserandino, Mount soccer team member Bryant Cruz '14, Rocco Commisso '67, Mount Director of Development Julie Androshick Boyle, Mount soccer team members Franklin Richards '14 and Niall McGeever '14, Mount yearbook editor Jerel Gayle '14 and Mount soccer coach Mike Boyle '80.

Dear Alums and Friends of the Mount,

As you settle back to read this newsletter, think for a moment about your own Mount days. What are you especially grateful for in your critical high school years?  Was there a teacher or fellow student who helped make those days memorable and special?

Thanksgiving has a way of drawing us into such reflections, and rightly so. It is sign of a balanced life that we take time to be grateful for the many gifts and special moments in our life even in the midst of changes, challenges, and the sheer business of the world we live in.

OK, now get ready for a newsletter that celebrates the rich history of the Mount of the past, and sings praises to the Mount of the future.

The 7th Annual Harvard Club Symposium is the "tale of two Marks", a great alum event. The Ivy League theme is continued in a striking video clip celebrating a generous gift by Rocco Commisso '67 to Columbia University. Listen carefully to Rocco's story since it is a tale which reflects the heart and mission of the Mount and harkens back to the "two Marks."

The last news article is a tribute to the memory and service of Brother William James Kearney. His teaching and administrative skills guided many young students to success over their high school careers (I am living proof of his magic from the days he was my Principal at St. Agnes HS).

The service and dedication of Bro. James is motivation enough to support the Mount with a gift to the Annual Fund. But for those who still need proof, take a look at the "biblical video" at the end of the newsletter. Who could say NO to Moses??

I wish you and your family and friends a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday.

Sincerely,

Dr. Anthony Miserandino

Harvard Club Is A Tale of Two Marks: Mark Mora '14 Dishes on Hollywood with Mark Noble '85

Mark Mora '14, left, interviews Harvard Club honored guest Mark Noble '85 about the excitement of working as a senior field producer at Access Hollywood.

Mount alum who attended the 7th Annual Harvard Club Colloquium on Friday, November 8, 2013, were in for real star treatment when Mark Noble '85, Senior Field Producer for Access Hollywood, was the guest of honor.

The format was a conversation between Mount Senior and Tower Yearbook editor Mark Mora '15 and Noble. Through Mora's thought-provoking questions,  Noble gave a compelling story of how his Mount experience shaped his life view. Noble told the audience of Mount alum and friends that both rigorous academics and disciplinary, combined wiht a formal dress code, gave him a great amount of confidence, which then opened gateways for him in the world of journalism.

L. to R. Aphonso LeBlanc '86 , Ed Brand '82, Mark Noble '85,
Ralph Jardine '84, Jonathan Camacho '02 and John Mendez '04

Said Noble, " I had an overall positive experience while at the Mount. It is also my belief that competitive comradeship among classmates was also a positive, driving you to be the best that you could be to keep up. I know I wasn't the best student out there, but I gave it my best shot, and here I am.  I think as I left the school I soared with a definite sense of pride.

It is my belief that the Mountie rules we had to abide by, also helped shape who I am today. Many may find it humorous, but, I'm also grateful for those strict dress code guidelines, as I think the  meticulous dress code rules [whether we knew it or not] provided a framework to go along with the adage that "you only get one chance to make a first impression" and it's all about how one presents oneself. Track Athletes Reunite at Spiked Shoe Induction Ceremony

The 1996 National Leader 3200 Relay Team

Left to right Coach William Hackshaw'85, Howard Sterling '96, Gabriel Deleon '97, Miguel Lambert '96, Eddie Silfa '97, Coach Lenny Diaz '84

Mount track men came together November 14th at Rory Dolans Restaurant to honor those Mountaineers who have contributed to their sport and the proud tradition that is Mount Track and Field. The Spiked Shoe Induction Ceremony celebrated  generations of champions from track and field.

The event also serves as a reunion for Mount runners, coaches, teachers, family, and classmates. Inductees and guests came from as far away as Arizona, Wisconsin, Maryland, Virginia, and by the miracle of Skype technology, California in what was a happy and at times emotional evening.

The 2013 Honorees included Thomas Pagani '54, Richard Maiberger '60, Brendan McGarry '79, Christopher Mayo '93, and the 1996 National Leader 3200 Relay Team of Howard Sterling '96, Miguel Lambert '96, Eduardo Silfa '97, and Gabriel DeLeon '97. Each of the inductees expressed how their Mount athletic, scholastic, and spiritual  experience helped shape their present life's achievements.

On hand were former Mount Track Head Coaches William Hackshaw '85 and Lenny Diaz '84. Mount Pride was on display as students from our present Mountaineer Track team with coach Darnell Gatling looked on and can now appreciate the broad shoulders on which they stand.

A special thank you goes out to Master of Ceremonies Martin Hemsley '80 and his wife Adrienne for their efforts and commitment in the events organization.

I Was A Summer Hoya
by Woodley Jean -Louis '15

Editor's note: Woodley Jean-Louis is a writer for the Tower Newspaper, an honors student and football player for the Mountaineers. Woodley spent a summer at Georgetown University's pre-college Summer Program, and writes below to share his experience with us.

Woodley Jean-Louis '15, second row, 3rd from the right, with fellow students at Georgetown University's
Pre-College Summer Program 2013

Summer vacation is meant for nothing but having fun with those you love, going through new experiences, and just having the time of your life. But, I spent this summer doing something many kids my age would not do-- I went to school. Naturally if any teenager was offered to go to school over the summer they would sigh, complain, and just think their summer is ruined. I did the exact opposite because I wasn't attending just any summer school, I was attending the Georgetown University

Pre-college Summer Program.

I spent five weeks in Georgetown, D. C. taking a course on the fundamentals of business. While receiving three college credits at Georgetown University, I also received an in depth view of the branches of business, met wise and inspirational professors, and learned about numerous aspects of today's economy.

In addition, I was given a few tasks in which I was placed in a group where we not only had our own box making company, which clarified the processes of financing and making important business decisions, but, also developed a business plan in which we spent hours in an attempt to develop the perfect business that would benefit the lives of Georgetown students.  Keep Reading

Class of '83 and '88

Classes of '83 and '88 Rockin Mount Memories at the Rambling House!

The Rambling House Restaurant in Woodlawn was the setting of an informal get together of Mount Alumni from the 1980's. The classes of 1983 and 1988 came out to have  appetizers, drinks, and catch-up on what has been happening in their personal and family lives and hear about the good news that is happening today at the Mount.

The class of '83 outnumbered the '88 crew and had fun letting their Mountaineer little brothers know about it. The informal setting and the spontaneity of the reunion seemed to be a fit for those who attended.

Thank You to the Rambling House Restaurant and their two present Mount Saint Michael student busboys, Brendan Linden '16 and Eddie O'Connor '16 who helped give us such great service.

One of the many unique qualities of Mount graduates is that no matter when we may have graduated from the Mount, we seem to share many of the same attributes as those alumni who may have graduated many years before or after us.  It's always great to share stories about our past teachers whether they are Marist Brothers or lay faculty.  Keep Reading

Adinolfi, a successful gold-record producer, label executive and publisher, put together "a rock n' roll band" that would feature his 10 and 14-year old sons. Fans marvel at the group's ability to recapture the original sound of the hits in the BRONX WANDERERS' repertoire. Thanks to Vinny's producing expertise and his own musical talent, even songs by the major hitmakers such as Frankie Valli and Paul Anka sound virtually note for note "true" to the studio versions.  Special thanks goes out to Frank Pellegrino '73 and his event crew who made the show so comfortable and enjoyable for many friends and alumni in attendance.

Mr. Steven R. O'Hanlon '76: Steven & Joni celbrated their 25th wedding anniversary in 2013.  Their son Walter is 16.

It all started for Noble in New York City as a Field Producer for WABC-TV's "Eyewitness News", where his investigative series titled "Taxi's: A License to Kill," earned an Emmy Nomination. Mark has also gone undercover, to report on the inequities within the New York City public school system.

On the flip-side, he has also covered those larger than life stories, including the trial of late mobster John Gotti as well as Nelson Mandela's landmark visit to New York, shortly after his release from a South African Prison.

During his tenure at Access Hollywood, Mark has covered several high-profile events, amongst them, the Oscars, Golden Globes, Emmys and Grammy Awards, as well as the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Mark's work at Access Hollywood earned him a NAACP Nomination for the News segment "Color of Hollywood."

Summer HoyaHoya

Although our box making company didn't do so well, which had miniature paper boxes we made from meticulous measurements, folding, and glue, and our business plan received an honorable mention, we as a group grew closer to each other and combined our strengths and intelligence to help each of us expand our weaknesses and make them strengths.

From having meetings almost everyday, we learned more about each other and developed a close relationship which we will always have. Not only did the course truly reveal to me what I want to major in in college, it also showed me what I really want from a college beyond how great their academics are according to Forbes. Now, I am far more knowledgeable about what I want to do in the future and am one step ahead of the game.

Alongside the hours of studying, I encountered new experiences as well as new people. When I first arrived at Georgetown and was all settled in, I was not only nervous but, found it difficult to make friends being that I haven't endured being without a friend since I first entered Mount. Before I knew it, I made friends from all over the world including places like Ecuador, China, Mexico, and even places in the United States like California, Connecticut, Florida, and Maryland.

When not studying, we went bowling, visited the National museums, and went to carnivals, sporting events, and even some parties. While doing all of that was great, I tried good to new places to tried new foods at restaurants like Johnny Rockets, Serendipity, Carmine's, and the Farmers Market. Albeit pretty much everything I ate was practically life changing, I can't remember what life was like before I tried deep fried Oreos.

Anyways, all the activities did indeed seem entertaining but, I couldn't fall off the wagon. So, to stay in shape, everyday I went to the Yates Field House where I played some basketball scrimmages for conditioning and did my regular weight lifting workouts that I did at Mount. While doing that, I also met various people on the court which I later became good friends with. Then we would all introduce each other to our friends which only gave us more friends. Though that sounds pleasant, it is great when you have those friends, but devastating when you have to say good bye. Knowing we didn't have all the time in the world, we made the most of our time together, thankfully without any YOLO moments, and appreciated each others presence.

Sadly, time goes by much faster when you're having fun. By the end of the program, I had made a bunch of new friends who I was able to share amazing experiences with. Although I left a day before we were supposed to leave the campus, I saw and felt some of the emotions that were floating in the air which suffocated the campus. By the time I got home, I heard of so many people who just broke into tears as they had to say good bye to their friends, some which they may not be able to see again. But I definitely know I will never forget the summer of 2013 which I spent as a summer Hoya
