Vigil honoring Matthew Wallace on October 9, 2013

Dear Alums and Friends of the Mount,

Last week proved that the Mount is indeed, a special community. Matthew Wallace, a senior, was tragically killed, and the school community pulled together to support Matthew's family, and in a special way his brother Mark, a sophomore here at the Mount.

Matthew was a highly regarded senior, played on two varsity sports, and was a strong member of the St. Barnabas Parish (Altar Server and Boy Scouts). The line at the funeral home extended over ¾ of a mile up McClean Avenue, and over 100 cars where part of his funeral cortège.  This is quite a show of support for such a young person.

As you read down the newsletter you will meet the newly arrived teachers who have joined the Faculty in September. To a person, they felt the warmth and fellowship of the Mount community in reaction to Matthew's death. As one person noted, "The mature and caring response of his friends confirms that the Mount is the place for me."

It certainly is the right place - for many reasons! You will also read about the special accomplishments of Rocco Commisso '67, the founder and CEO of Mediacom. His dream of building a new corporate headquarters was brought to fruition through the engineering skills of a classmate, Jim Vernocchi '67.

Travelling in different social circles as students, they didn't know of each other until they sat across the table to talk business! They bonded immediately, and the rest is history.

The newsletter has lots more information on events and people who breathe life into 4300 Murdock Avenue. This campus comes alive at 7am and doesn't rest until late at night...every day! The energy of the students, coaches, moderators, and teachers keeps the dream of Champagnat alive and thriving.

Welcome to a great school year!

 Sincerely,

Dr. Anthony Miserandino

Matthew Wallace 1996-2013

Along with Matthew's parents, his brother Mark, a Mount sophomore, and his sister Halley, we in the Mount community grieve for senior Matthew Wallace, who was tragically killed on September 29 by a Metro North train.

Matthew attended St Barnabas Elementary School from Pre-K to 8th grade. He attained numerous academic  awards, certificates and Science Fair commendations. Matthew became a Cub Scout at the age of three .

Upon moving onto the Boy Scouts, he achieved and received one of the most prestigious religious awards by the Boy Scouts of America: the Arrow of Light. As a Boy Scout, he also attained the highest religious award, Ad Aitore Del, which was presented by Cardinal O'Conner at St. Patrick's Cathedral.

At the age of 7, Matthew became an Eastchester Blue Devil. During this time he fostered his sense of identity as a driven and dedicated athlete. Matthew learned the importance of comradery and would continue to display unprecedented loyalty' and dedication to his teammates for the rest of his athletic career. He also performed strongly as an equestrian champion, soccer, basketball and baseball player. At age 13 he graduated from St. Barnabas and advanced to Mount Saint Michael High School.

Mount Receives Michael Gordon Foundation Grant of $25,000
Michael Gordon
dedicated his fortune to helping   educate young people

The Development Office is pleased to announce that it has received a grant from the Michael Gordon Foundation in the amount of $25,000 for tuition assistance. This grant will allow us to help 25 more Mount students with scholarships of  $1000 each.

The Michael Gordon Foundation awards scholarship and special education grants to schools for children under the age of 18.

Michael Gordon was born in Budapest, Hungary on March 13, 1923. He learned the art of handbag making and began to earn his living, one handbag at a time.

At the end of WW ll,  Michael went to Paris and worked as an apprentice at the Haute Couture design houses. All during this time Michael longed to come to the United States and be a part of the American dream. In 1951, with some borrowed dollars and a handful of English words he arrived in New York. Within a few years, Michael Gordon achieved one of his life's dreams, and became an American citizen. Mount Senior Keith Ignacio Attends Leadership Conference in D.C.

Keith Ignacio '14 recently attended the Washington Youth Leadership Seminar in Washington, D.C.

Mount Senior Keith Ignacio headed to Washington D.C. for the Washington Youth Leadership Seminar from October 2-6!

Keith was accompanied by Stanley De La Cruz '12,  a sophomore at the University of Albany, SUNY.

The Washington Youth Leadership Seminar focused on the development of future leaders today and critical issues of our time such as  healthcare, immigration, and economics.

Keith says,   "I would like to thank the Mount  for providing me with such a great opportunity. If it weren't for my friends, classmates, and teachers over these past four years; I would be nowhere close to being accepted for this Seminar. I promise to use this Seminar as an opportunity to develop my leadership skills and help this school become a better place. Honestly, words can't describe how thankful I am for being given this opportunity. Thank you."

Congratulations Keith and Stanley!

Mount Soccer Team Kicks Off New Season With Enthusiasm and Big Wins!

After  a slow start in their first three tough CHSAA games, the young and enthusiastic Mount Varsity Soccer program has found its stride.  Led by Captains Anton Porter and Lawrence Drejaj, the Mountaineers are rising up in the CHSAA standings with big wins over arch rival Cardinal Hayes and St. Edmunds with a pair of 3-1 victories.

Since early August, Coaches Mickey and Danny Boyle have preached patience and perseverance and now as the leaves on the beautiful 23 acre campus on Murdock Avenue are turning color, those life lesson learned are being realized on the soccer pitch.

The young Mountaineer squad is anchored by five seniors, Jack Burke, Niall McGeever, Lawrence Drejaj, Bryan Cruz, and Franklin Richards. The team has received a scoring boost from 2012 NY Post All City standout junior Anton Porter, and rising sophomores Jonathan Davis, and Hayale Smith. The defense is emerging nicely with the steady performances from sweeper sophomore Fernando Zelaya, and returning senior goalie James Brady. Keep Reading

Mark Noble '85: Hooray For Hollywood!

Mark Noble '85 is currently a Senior Field Producer at Access Hollywood in Burbank, CA.

Mount eNews had the recent good fortune to interview Mark Noble '85, currently a senior field producer at Access Hollywood in Burbank, California. Mark's exciting career, which is the whirlwind you would imagine it to be, includes jet-setting with superstars like Rhianna and hanging out at the Oscars!

Can you describe your experience at the Mount?

I had an overall positive experience while at the Mount. It is also my believe that competitive comradeship among classmates was also a positive, driving you to be the best that you could be to keep up. I know I wasn't the best student out there, but I gave it my best shot, and here I am.  I think as I left the school I soared with a definite sense of pride.  It is my belief that the Mountie rules we had to abide by, also helped shape who I am today.

Many may find it humorous, but, I'm also grateful for those strict dress code guidelines, as I think the  meticulous dress code rules [whether we knew it or not] provided a framework to go along with the adage that "you only get one chance to make a first impression" and it's all about how one presents oneself.

What is your favorite Mount memory?

Besides completing the task, known as the 4-year high school experience, is my time spent on extracurricular activities. Let's not get it twisted.  Mount is an academic institution hands down, but it's the social interaction amongst the students, and honing leadership skills that made for good memories, Student Council [at that time] running track [although I didn't run for long] or rooting for your friends on the  various teams.

2013/2014 Annual Fund:
Why I Give

Paul D'Ascoli '63:  My time at the Mount was a "life altering" experience:  At just the right time in my life the Mount helped my realize if I wanted to achieve my dreams I had to work hard, treat people with respect, and stay the course no matter what obstacles came my way.  Receiving the reinforcement from the Mount faculty and staff along with the Mount's set of codes and values at that critical time in my life was priceless for me!

Now that I'm on the back nine of my life I would like to try and help make sure that other kids who have dreams whether they be the same as mine or not have the opportunity to attend Mount Saint Michael Academy to do the same.

Matthew WallaceWallace

At MSM, he continued to excel in both academics and athletics. He strove to be an exceptional student and was named Captain of the  freshman football team. Always seeking a challenge, Matthew became enamored with lacrosse and proved to be a remarkable player.

Matthew also exhibited a keen interest in politics and was able to offer informed, constructive commentary on world events and history. He was looking forward to college and strove to play lacrosse. He will be remembered as an exceptional young man: thoughtful, respectful, humorous, scholarly, handsome beyond compare, intelligent, rational, charismatic, loyal, compassionate, comradely and accomplished.

Matthew will always be loved by his Mother, Father, Halley and Mark. He will be forever cherished by his Great-Grandmother, Grand Parents, numerous Uncles and Aunts and countless Cousins, teachers, coaches, clergy, neighbors, parents and friends.

Michael GordonGordon

In 1968, after working as a designer and pattern maker for a number of years, Michael bought Koret Inc.,  a handbag company in New York City. Over the next 30 years, his reputation in the fashion industry grew while he designed and made handbags for Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Givenchy and others.

While his fortunes increased, Michael Gordon never forgot his humble beginnings and often spoke of a desire to give something back for the opportunities afforded and successes achieved in his greatly loved America.

In 1991, he established The Michael Gordon Foundation, Inc., to be funded at the time of his death. The mission of the Foundation was to aid children under the age of 18 in areas of Education, Health and Welfare.

Michael Gordon passed away on January 25, 1998 but the inspiration of his life goes on through the work of his Foundation.

Rocco CommissoCommisso

Left to right: Mount President Anthony Miserandino, Rocco Commisso '67 and Mount Director of Development Julie Androshick Boyle

Rocco founded Mediacom in 1995 to acquire and develop cable systems in the nation's underserved smaller communities. Commisso engineered Mediacom's dramatic growth, transforming it into the nation's 8th largest cable operator with annual revenues of over $1.5 billion.

With its 4,500 employees in 22 states, Mediacom provides advanced broadband products and services to 1.3 million residential and business customers in 1,500 small cities and towns across America.

Jim Vernocchi '67, Rocco's classmate and lead engineer on the new Mediacom headquarters, explains the finer points of the construction to Brian Clark '76

Of note is that Rocco ran into his old classmate Jim Vernocchi '76, Vice President of Bergen Engineering, when Bergen was hired to lead the construction  of the new headquarters.

The irony is that Rocco and Jim, because they were in different homerooms and classes, did not know each other at Mount: they got to know each other 45 years after they graduated while working together on the Mediacom project!

SoccerSoccer

The team will be tested again with matches versus three tough opponents Cardinal Spellman, Msgr. McClancy, and LaSalle Academy.

When asked what the teams goals are for the season Coach Mickey Boyle's response was... "We are a young team, so we hope to grow together and with continued 100% effort that will lead to improvement. When that happens we can make it to the CHSAA Final Four, and then anything can happen!"

Sounds like a plan!

Mark Noble '85Noble

What is your least favorite memory?

I think my least favorite was practice for cross country. In theory it sounded like a good time...but those runs were killer.  Kudos to the coach who tried to help us keep momentum going.

How did you become interested in your current career?

I think just watching, reading and listening to the news. Also, always being curious about how people work, think and are influenced. Listening to and then telling stories which reflect and impact the various communities.  That is the center from which I wanted a career in television- at first hard news and now entertainment news.

When was your first big break?

Interning at Eyewitness News in NYC in the summer of 1988. I took a shot at applying- I  was in my 3-rd year at college in Vermont - decided to go for it, given I was a product of NYC, I knew the city and her streets. I had already had some TV/news production experience at school, so why not give it a shot. Truth be told, theory and practicum are two different worlds. Nothing schools you faster than being in the real thing/a real newsroom. I apparently made a good impression with work ethic and  skills.

After I graduated in 1989 from Castleton State College, WABC-TV -Eyewitness News  became my first job- in the newsroom, as a News desk Assistant and later Field Producer, working alongside some of the greats in the business, John Johnson, the late Bill Beutel, Sarah Wallace, Art McFarland, David Novarro ! From there I went on to report in Albany NY, then back down to work at News12 Long Island, and out to Los Angeles- and here I am.

Mark says celebrities are like us, for the most part: but does Eva Longoria really take out her own trash? Here Mark interviews on the red carpet for Access Hollywood

Are celebrities really like the rest of us?

They are for the most part. Minus events that are sponsored by studios/products  etc...They drive just like us, take out the trash just like us, shop like us but it gets tricky because many people believe, just because they're out shopping or are on the streets they're public property and it's just not always the case- hint- paparazzi -and Kanye at Los Angeles airport lashing out at a photographer.  The whole scope of things also tends to get murky when celebrities start believing their own press, or worse yet, when they allow their sycophants to rule their world.

What was your most memorable story for Access  Hollywood?

While I have had a good number of stories at Access Hollywood, nothing will top traveling with Rihanna aboard her 777 tour in November of 2012. We traveled for 7 days with Rihanna as she performed 7 concerts, in  7 different countries- among them, Stockholm, Paris, London and New York.

It was a fast track taste of life as a performer- we were in the trenches with her, moved as fast as she did- shuttling from venue to venue in an out of hotels sleeping on planes etc. It was an experience I will never forget , and would do it all again in a New York minute.

Are you loving the weather in CA?

The weather is the primary reason for my move to Los Angeles some 18 years ago. That Blizzard of 1994-1995 did it for me. I remember trudging through the snow storm to get to work at News 12 on Long  Island. Roads were closed. I couldn't drive and had to take the LIRR out there. That did it for me- especially traveling all that way from the north Bronx.

What do you miss about the Bronx?

I miss NYC Pizza in general

What advice would you give current Mount students?

Don't ever be afraid to think outside the box, it's always okay to follow the rules, and then add your own flavor to those rules, thereby getting to that happy medium. Use the rules to your benefit.

Thank you for keeping up with the exciting news at the Mount, and thank you always for your generous support!!!

Please let us know what you are up to, and we will cover it in the e-News.

Keep in contact with us and send us your updated contact information to stay in the loop!!
