Volume 3 Issue 6: February 2013 |
President's Letter
|
|
Dear Alums and Friends of the Mount,
You have heard me many times making reference to Champagnat's challenge to "live with a heart that knows no bounds."
Our newsletter offers you two great examples of this habit of the heart: senior Luke Barlow and students on a leadership retreat at Esopus.
As President, it is very useful to have a student who is the "go to guy" on campus. Luke is my right hand man. If I need a task performed, a person to track down, or an errand to run, Luke is there. The Prudential Award he received is simply icing on the cake for Luke and recognition of a treasured Mount value.
The article on student leadership reflects the great experience so many Mount students have enjoyed at Esopus. It is a "truism" within the Marist world that Mount students are key leaders on retreats. These students infuse a spirit of service and caring when they return to the Mount and continue their normal routines- although nothing is "normal" for these fellows after their reflective encounter at Esopus.
Our school culture is transformed by this cohort of students. Yes, Luke is among these school leaders giving flesh to Champagnat's challenge.
In closing, let me wish you and your family blessings and grace as Easter quickly approaches. Yet again, another opportunity to learn to live with a heart transformed.
Sincerely,
Dr. Anthony Miserandino

Mount Sophomores and Juniors Develop Leadership at Esopus Retreat
|
|
On March 17th and 18th a group of 29 sophomores and junior leaders attended a Youth Leadership retreat at the Marist Retreat Center in Esopus. The overnight adventure yielded positive results in which a tremendous amount of personal growth and exploration was witnessed firsthand by Brother Steve and Mr. Lepore, the chaperones.

The comments from the Retreat Leaders, Brother Owen and Brother Steve Milan also validated the success of the trip; impressed with the maturity, depth of knowledge and pride in The Mount.
Below is a reflection written by
Mount Sophomore Chaz Chiclana:
When I went on the sophomore retreat this past weekend I learned a lot about character. I also found my own self character. I learned the characteristics of being a leader, which involves a lot of values.
A leader is supposed to work with his team instead of against them. A leader is supposed to set goals, but also achieve them with his team instead of taking all the credit. A leader is supposed to be determined and will go through anything to make sure he reaches his goals.
Throughout the retreat we did activities that showed leadership and team work. For example, there was an activity where we had to create a car and for each part we added the contribution it gave. This activity demonstrated teamwork and it showed that each piece that creates the car is vital because without it the car wouldn't work and it's the same with a team: each person is vital to the team's success. On this retreat I learned a lot about myself and about others. I learned what it really takes to be a true leader and what character is.

Senior Luke Barlow Recognized for Volunteer Servce by Prudential
|
|

Mount Senior Luke Barlow, 18 years old, of Yonkers, New York was honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a state-level Certificate of Excellence from the 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Luke Barlow was nominated for this award by Mount Saint Michael Academy in the Bronx, where he is a 12th grade student.
Presented annually by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honor young people across America for outstanding community service activities.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, now in its 18th year, also recognizes the top middle level and high school volunteer in each state and the District of Columbia, and will name America's top ten youth volunteers in May. More than 370,000 young people have been considered for these awards since the program's inception in 1995, making it the nation's largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer service.
"The recipients of these awards vividly demonstrate that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities," said John R. Strangefield, Chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial. "In recognizing these students and placing a spotlight on their volunteer service activities, we hope to motivate others to consider how they can also contribute to their community."

Mount Students Take On A University Level Challenge With Stonehill College

What should the owners of the Kodiak Bear Lodge do? The problem solving team, from left to right, Donovan Salmon '15, Matthew Barrett '15, Keith Ignacio '14, Nial McGreeley '14, Sam Oliver '14, Corey Seaton '15 and Mark Mora '14.

The fate of the brother-sister owned and operated Kodiak Bear Lodge in Achorage, Alaska rested in the hands of seven Mount students during blustery week in March. The Lodge was suffering financial difficulties and our students had to decide what the brother and sister owners should do: sell, bring in an investor, or keep their business and make it work.
The Kodiak Bear Lodge case was the focal point of the Stonehill Challenge, and was created and brought to Mount students by alum Michael Mullen '76.Mullen is an Assistant Professor of Business at Stonehill College in Easton, MA and also a managing director at Tarvos Capital Management LLC in MA.
Students from the Mu Omega chapter of Beta Alpha Psi National Honor Society for accounting majors are competing in the 2013 Ernst and Young Diversity Award Challenge. The Stonehill students' mission was to come up with an idea that would show the everyday applications and opportunities of the accounting profession so that high school students in highly diverse regions would be aware of the potential skills they already have if they want to pursue studies in the accounting and finance professions.
Says Mullen, "What the Mount does in educating students from a grounded perspective gives students the tools to tackle the demands and rigor of a college level business curriculum. The whole point is to make students aware of the dynamics of a business curriculum. The Mount's high level focus in math, history, science and especially written and oral communications are the underpinnings for success in college and beyond.

When drivers traveling east on Route 17 towards New York, Mediacom Communications Corporations' new corporate headquarters in Blooming Grove, NY, they are going to see quite a memorable image of the future of high tech media. That image, and building, is the brainchild of Mediacom's founder and CEO, Rocco Commisso '67.
Says Rocco, "We started with a vision of relocating to a state-of-the-art corporate park that reflected the high-tech nature of our business and that our employees would be proud to call home," said Rocco B. Commisso, Mediacom's Chairman and CEO. "Along the way, we received tremendous cooperation and encouragement from Town, County, State and Federal governmental officials, facilitating our decision to remain and build in New York. While the state of New Jersey made an extremely attractive offer to move there, Blooming Grove is an ideal location for our Hudson Valley based employees. It is my hope that Mediacom's major capital investment in this project paves the way for accelerating economic development in Orange County."
The 110,000 square foot facility will be completed in the Fall of 2013 and will become the base of operations for Mediacom's corporate staff, now located in Goshen and Middletown, NY, and will allow the Company to expand its local workforce in the coming years. has the room to expand from the current 280 employees up to 400 employees. It will boast full service kitchen facilities, and indoor/outdoor dining options with amazing panoramic views of the Hudson Valley, and a gym for working out.
Rocco, where do we sign up?

The class of 1963 Reunion Committee is spanning the globe with a variety of calls, emails, and letters in order to have the best 50th reunion - Friday May 31 and Saturday June 1- in Mount history!!!
We bring to you....
THE THRILL OF VICTORY!
Paul D'Ascoli '63 on March 4, about four miles down on the South Kaibab Trail at Grand Canyon National Park. Of course, the solid foundations you see Paul standing on here started way back at the Mount! Paul hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up again. Because he got cell reception there, he never stopped calling alum to come to the Reunion!!!
Says Paul, " When I spoke with Kevin Curran '63 we talked about how we used to meet in a hole in the wall pool hall in Yonkers called Harry's and he would hustle me out of my $10 a week allowance playing 9 ball! "
If you hear an echo in your phone, class of '63 alum, that is Paul calling you from the cavernous wilds of Arizona! Pick up the phone! Says Paul, "There comes a point in life when you begin to reflect on how you have lived your life and the things that made you who you are.
High school, although many years ago was one of the times that had a major effect on my life and to go back and share some of those memories with people you haven't seen in a very long time is going to have a lot of meaning for me and make me feel good !!!

Mount Marches On! Mount Pride On Display On Two Avenues: 5th and McLean!
|
|
On a snowy March afternoon Mount students, staff and alumni proudly made their way up cold, windy, and snowy 5th Avenue to march in the 252nd Annual New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade.

The weather may have been cold but the Mount was greeted warmly by the hearty parade watchers who lined 5th Avenue despite the blustery weather conditions. Cheers of Go Mount, Beat the Birds, and Up the Bronx could be heard from 46th to 79th Streets. Our boys had fun greeting and waving and thanking all the New Yorkers for their support. Mount Alum Bishop Denis Sullivan '63 braved the conditions and greeted our boys as we passed St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Fine weather and big crowds greeted the Mount again on March 23rd as our MSM Woodlawn/Yonkers students and MSM Woodlawn/Yonkers alumni crossed McLean Avenue to participate in the 2nd Annual McLean Avenue Merchants St. Patrick's Day Parade. The march started in front of St. Barnabas Chapel and ended at Coyne Park. Our contingent was cheered long and loud by Woodlean residents whose brother, cousin dad, or granddad attends or formerly attend high school on the corner of Nereid and Murdock Avenues. Special thanks to John Coleman '84 and his son Jake and his friend Craig Martin for being Mount flagbearers- it wasn't easy to keep those flags straight in that wind!!!
So many in the crowd who attended Mount Saint Michael Academy where very happy and proud to know that Mount and continues to educate young men from the area in the catholic tradition of the Marist Brothers. Said Brian Costello '16, "Marching with the Mount in New York City and in my neighborhood is a lot fun! It was an honor to carry our Blue and Gold banner."

Brian McGovern '08 Sets Pole Vaulting Records at Manhattan College |
|
From Manhattan College - After record-setting performances at last weekend's ASU Invitational, Manhattan College's Brian McGovern '08 (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Lydia Wehrli (Anieres, Switzerland) have been named the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Performers of the Week for the outdoor season.
McGovern established a school and Irish national record in the pole vault, while Wehrli set a new school mark in the hammer throw.

AND THE AGONY OF DA FEET!
Here is Rich Tinger '63 after placing second in the Mountain Dew Downhill Challenge (over 66 group) at Killington, VT in early March. It is no surprise, since Rich was always known as hard working and fun loving in high school. He says, "the Mount taught me spirit, dedication, and gave me the building blocks to succeed in life."
Today Rich has the same life loving personality and is living his life to the fullest. Rich says, " I wish to give back to those who most need the fruits that I have been blessed with over the years!"
Rich is down-hilling through the call list for the Reunion. "When I called Gerry Gilligan '63 it brought many great memories! We went to the same Catholic grammar school and grew up in the same neighborhood. Gerry updated me on friends from our altar boy days, like our crazy high school friend Earl "The Tasmanian Devil" Martin. Earl has contacted us and is planning on attending the reunion all the way from Australia!!
CLICK HERE TO REGISTER FOR THE 50th REUNION
Rich says : "I think that it is time for us to relive those special years, to pledge our support to a great institution that has continued the same tradition that we were taught. The young men are terrific. They really make me proud that I attended the Mount and am now involved in Career Day and in raising scholarships for the less fortunate students. I realize that without our support many of these boys, who are our future could not attend this great school."
THE HUMAN DRAMA AT MOUNT ST.MICHAEL ACADEMY-
THIS IS THE CLASS OF 1963's 50th REUNION!
Rudy "Pops" Popolizio '63 at Mission Control in NY. Rudy was a pretty good pitcher at the Mount, and is using his pitch now to encourage alum to come to their 50th Reunion.
Favorite memory: "As a baseball player our undefeated JV baseball season and a real good Senior season, only to loose to Molloy in the playoffs. Our Reunion will give us one more chance to relive the highs and lows during those four important years of our lives."
Joseph DeGennaro '63 was the guy who was always there to help when it was needed and was a member of the Senior Prom Committee!! Joe, pictured here with his wife, Roseann, still likes to work on a classy event-- meaning that the Reunion Committee can still count on him to lend a hand to make the event utterly fabulous!
One of Joe's favorite memories was decorating the gym for Senior Prom, "An Evening in Paris". Says Joe, " It turned out even better than we had hoped and I don't the think the gym was ever decorated as nice again. My other great memory was beating Hayes every year on Thanksgiving."
As we all head into our 70's I think it's great to relive our high school years and reacquaint ourselves with people we haven't seen in so many years. "
Tom Parente '63, right, looks calm but is actually burning up the lines trying to contact alums like James Hastings and Tom McCarron.
Says Parente, " I played football with Jim Hastings '63 and we laughed together for over 30 minutes about many things. We haven't spoken since graduation, but we found it remarkable that we both remembered the same exact statement made by our football center when he came back to the huddle after a hard hit and said, 'Mommy, I don't want to go swimming anymore!' Obviously, we had a young man with a concussion.!"
Tom Parente reminded me that we actually attended 3 different schools together (kindergarten, grammar school and high school) - a total of 13 consecutive years...wow.
Why is important for every alum to attend their 50th Reunion?
To rekindle old friendships and also to "meet" guys that we really didn't know in high school. An example is the reunion committee itself. I didn't really know any of them in high school but they sound like a great bunch of guys that I seem to have a lot in common with now. Besides, some of us may be busy for the 75th reunion!

Stonehill | |
Says Mullen, "What the Mount does in educating students from a grounded perspective gives students the tools to tackle the demands and rigor of a college level business curriculum. The whole point is to make students aware of the dynamics of a business curriculum. They deal with many elements needed in the accounting profession, all of which in one has to excel, including math, history, science and especially communications."
Juniors Keith Ignacio, Sam Oliver, Markony Mora and Niall McGeever and Sophomores Donovan Salmon, Matthew Barrett and Corey Seaton put in about 20 hours outside of class and a whole lot of brain muscle during the 7 days they worked on the case study.
They cleverly split the elements of the case among them into quantitative and qualitative work streams. Students in Beta Alpha Psi at Stonehill acted as consultants to the team via Skype video meetings but only for direction and support, while they were coached on the Mount side by Development Director Julie Androshick Boyle, whose background includes a specialization in banking and securities research and consulting at McKinsey and Company and an expertise in strategic communications.
The "challenge" was squarely on the shoulders of the Mount's "Team Yankees." Keith and Sam created an income model in excel, while Matthew, Corey, Donovan and Niall worked on analyzing the pros and cons of any decision that the Lodge owners would make. Mark Mora wrote up the entire case, synthesizing the research from all of the team members.
Competing against Mount students is a high school in Massachussetts. Mullen is hoping to expand the challenge next year to more high schools in the northeast and possibly nationally if the idea gets picked up by other chpaters of Beta Alpha Psi.
Says Mullen, "High school students rarely get a chance to see the merits of their education applied to real life situations that people tackle every day. With case studies such as this, students see the value of their education and grow confident in their intellectual abilities.
As a college, Stonehill prides itself on its liberal arts traditions that further these skills - keys to success in life in general. But its students also get the opportunity to study areas of interest including business and other pre-professional programs. That is exactly what we do here at Stonehill from a business perspectiveAs demonstrated by the success of our alumni, our programs in accounting, finance, marketing, and international business are some of the best in the country. Educational and professional development opportunities at Stonehill are unmatched for its students."
Our Mount team will find how how they fared in competition next month! Good Luck!!!
