President's Letter

Dear Alums and Friends of the Mount,
In the northeast we are in the midst of a winter blast of arctic weather. It makes planning for an upcoming alum reunion in Bonita Springs, Florida all that much easier to plan for and anticipate! Please make plans now to join the fun on March 2, 2013!
Back at the Mount we have lots to celebrate. You will see that we have stories that combine the achievements of students in the classroom and on the playing field. We have a relay team running in the highly competitive Millrose Games in February. These students, and others, demonstrate the ideal of the "scholar-athlete."
Amazingly, over half the school is involved in some part of our sports program. These students must learn to balance homework and projects with hours of practice and weekend competitions. There is a proven correlation between playing sports and academic performance. It is no wonder that such students win college scholarship when they graduate. Indeed, 62% in the Class of 2012 were awarded academic scholarships to college. Activities such as our new Sports Medicine Program will ensure greater success as students take more science courses and participate in internships.
On the artistic side, it is also important to note the achievements of students in the literary arts. You can catch the flair of this theme in the article on the "Night of the Arts." This was a jam-packed, standing room only, evening of poetry and narrative readings.
It is the ideal of a "scholar-athlete" which links our students to the core Mount values: character formation, a strong moral compass, a deep respect for caring for the needs of others, and intellectual rigor and curiosity. See the young alums who are pictured just graduating from the NYPD Police Academy - all college graduates. Who better to lead the city into the next century!
Lastly, speaking of leadership, congratulations to Bishop Dennis Sullivan '63 on his selection to head the Diocese of Camden, NJ. We will lose Bishop Sullivan as a member of our Directory but I know he is only a phone call away when I need his wise counsel.
The Mount of the FUTURE depends on the leadership of those from the past and present. We have a great foundation. With your continued generous support we are confident of our FUTURE success.
Sincerely,
Dr. Anthony Miserandino

What values shaped your interest in becoming a police officer?
A sense of civic service and duty to help those whom can't help themselves. It was at the Mount especially where I first was able to take part in different activities such as the Midnight Run program, the toys for tots and Thanksgiving food drives where I felt I was doing something to make someone else's life just a little better which is what a Police Officer tries to do everyday. Freshmen Again: Reports from College!
|
|
 |
Chris Le '12 and Roman Garcia '12 talk about the college experience
|
Our very youngest alum, Roman Garcia '12 and Chris Le '12, just finished their first semester of college and have reported back that they have packed a ton of experience into that first semester! They credit the Mount for easing their transition to university level performance. Both were Champagnat Scholars while at the Mount. Oh, they are managing to have fun at college as well!
Chris Le '12 is a freshman at Pace University in Manhattan and is studying business. His major is Quantitative Business Analysis, which will lead to career opportunities such as financial statement analysis for companies and stock analysis.
Chris says, "Certain classes at Mount helped me to manage a heavier work load with AP courses, so I was able to adjust faster as a freshman to the work load than many of my students."
Chris is also involved in the fraternity Tau Kappa Epsilon, which is a fraternity that runs a lot of activities on campus like homecoming. Says Chris, "Being involved helps me to integrate into the social life at school. I try to get to know everybody, which is fun. It is a very family -esque frat. They look out for each other."
Roman Garcia '12 is a freshman at Reed College in Portland, OR and is a prospective History major. Says Roman about Reed, " One key thing about Reed that I love is the wonderfully brilliant that I have met."
Continues Roman, 'The level of personal attention I received at Mount is comparable to what I receive at Reed. The ability to speak professionally and maturely with teachers who are concerned about my development is something I experienced at the Mount and now at Reed."
So how is that Portland coffee, anyway? "The coffee here is great! but the pizza is awful, " laments Roman.

The World of Art at the Mount Is A Wonderful One
|
|
 |
Thomas Furano
|
Tom Furano has been teaching art at the Mount since September of 2009. Tom a professional artist who resides in Port Chester blends his passion for teaching and creating art with the life lessons that are learned when someone makes their living in the art world. Tom's classroom expands to many different areas and genre's through the many "guest lecturers" Tom brings to his classroom.
One "guest lecturer" that comes to Tom's class on occasion is Phillip "Anton" Pollard. Anton is a local self supporting artist and art agent from Mount Vernon. His genre is abstract art that expresses African American themes. Anton teaches the class how he creates his art, but also about the life lessons and disciplines that are needed to make something you love into a profitable business venture.
 |
Mount art class listens to artist Philip Anton Pollard on
Thursday, January 17 2013.
|
Anton speaks to our students about the advantages and difficulties of getting up in the morning and answering to no one but yourself. He says, "There is so much more to art than just creating your art. There are many freedoms, but you must adhere to rules of conformity and master time management and scheduling. There is studio work and there are appointments to keep. Students must take time to study other art forms and artists and learn from them."
Mr. Furano's art class exemplifies all our classrooms here at the Mount. We are learning about our subject matter but we are also preparing for life's challenges that lie ahead.

Mount Basketball Team
Looking To Make A Run!
|
|
 |
Marcus Patterson, Mount senior , looks to take a shot against a guard from
Christ the King in a Jan 17 2013 game.
|
A tough early schedule Mount Basketball is competing well a league than many basketball experts consider to be "the toughest high school league in the country"- The CHSAA AA Division.
As Coach Tom Fraher states proudly..." In this league there are no off days. Every night you play against the best that New York City has to offer... It is very challenging and it is a lot of fun!"
The 2012-13 Mount Varsity team's record is currently stands at 8-10. The Mount after some nice early season wins versus Iona, Fordham, St. Peters, and Stepinac the Mount lost two very close games to defending CHSAA champion
St. Raymond's followed by tough losses to Cardinal Hayes and Christ the King. Earlier in the season, Mount travelled to Richmond Virginia, and battled in the Benedictine Tournament which featured some of the top high school basketball programs in the nation.
 |
Coach Tom Fraher, l, and Assistant Coach Tom McKenna, r,
|
"We know we can compete with the best, now we have to figure out how to compete and 'win' the close ones." The team has a blend of experience and youth with the steady play seniors Andrew Utate and Stephon Chong coupled with upcoming players to watch Juda Alexander and Nukow Singleton.
An upbeat Coach Fraher stated."We are working hard in practice and we are improving. That is what's important. Getting all our players back from injury is going to be a boost to our chemistry and play going down the stretch and in to the playoffs... With health, perseverance, and some made free throws... We can make a run at this thing" a smiling Coach Fraher said whimsically...
Sounds like a plan Coach!

What is the special bond you had in the Police Academy with your fellow alum?
The Police Academy can be pretty overwhelming its structured like a military boot camp except that you go home at the end of the day. Being in the same class as three other Mount Alum was a great feeling, when things got stressful or it seemed like there would be no end to the rigors and challenges of life in the Academy we were always there for each other in a way that would not have been the same for friends who had just met in the Police Dept.
What is the hardest part of a police officer's job?
Aside from the hours that you spend working when the rest of the world is sleeping, the hardest part of the job that I've experienced in my short time as a Police Officer is the times when no matter how hard you try you know there is nothing you can do to help someone. As a Police Officer the public looks at you to have all the answers and be able to solve any problem.
When someone needs directions because they are lost, or feel their life is being threatened or property stolen the first thing they think to do is look to a Police Officer to set things right. As a Police Officer you approach every crisis thrown at you with the attitude that you can fix everything and you will make everything ok. When the reality hits that there are just some things that are out of your control it can literally be the worst feeling ever.
What is the best part of that job?
The best part of the job comes when you come home at the end of the day to your family in one piece.
Do you get to meet the mayor?:)
Not during my time in the academy no, but in one of my previous jobs I got to meet him a few times.
What inspired you the most at MSM?
When I think of my time at Mount and what has inspired me the most I would have to say it would be the school motto "Ad Astra Per Aspera". It is such a clear message from day one of Freshmen year , that you must be willing to pay a price to achieve a goal.
Why should a parent send their son to MSM?
Since graduating many people who have sons or brothers getting ready for H.S ask me the same question. I always say that aside from the outstanding athletic and academic opportunities that the Mount offers the best part of MSM is that it takes a diverse group of boys from all different areas of the city and of different ethnicity who would have otherwise never associated with one another and puts them together in an institution which harbors such a deep camaraderie amongst them. So much so that after four years of hard work and sacrifice these young men now look at each other as brothers.
