President's Letter

Dear Alums and Friends of the Mount,
"Evil is defeated by love, and love alone." I came across this thought when trying to respond to the tragic events at Newtown Elementary School in Connecticut recently. There are no easy answers to understanding this event - only difficult questions. Hence, my response: proclaim love, even when it makes no sense - especially when it makes no sense.
It is this Christian optimism which we have learned through the example of the founder of the Marist Brothers, St. Marcellin Champagnat. He asked his Brothers and followers to "live with a heart that has no bounds."
I think the energy and power of this exhortation can be seen in the following newsletter. Here you will meet the indomitable spirit of the Mount! One of our alums, Captain Paul Rinn '64 is proof of the power and truth of Champagnat's observation.
Enjoy the alums who serve as mentors and models of dreams on the horizon as they share their experience and expertise with our boys at the Annual Career Day. See our students in action taking care of younger students at a traditional Christmas Party. A closer look at the folks who make up the Mount community is revealed in the story of one Mount family that knows the value of a great Mount education - on and off the playing field.
All in all, we have had a busy few weeks. The Christmas holiday offers a break from the action and you will find that our work at the Mount continues at a high level of energy and engagement.
I wish all our readers a warm and inspiring Christmas holiday. The narrative of a child's arrival bursting forth a long time ago is still being told, and re-told today in the classrooms and fields of the Mount. I wish you renewed joy and enjoyment of the many blessings this special time of year has to offer us.
Sincerely,
Dr. Anthony Miserandino

PAUL RINN '64 SPEAKS AT HARVARD CLUB
|
|
 | Captain Paul X. Rinn '64 |
Mount St. Michael Academy held its 6th Annual Harvard Club Colloquium at the Harvard Club in Manhattan on Dec. 11. The guest speaker was Mount Alum Captain Paul X. Rinn '64, USN (Ret.) first Commanding officer of the USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58).
Captain Rinn related to a captive audience how his experience at the Mount provided him with a solid foundation of principles that shaped his leadership and that instilled in him the value of "never giving up on your people." Because Rinn believed in his crew, he saw ordinary men, in the midst of a life threatening crisis, exhibit extraordinary character by providing life saving decisions through quick thinking and hard work when their ship was struck by a mine in the Persian Gulf on April 14. The event was sponsored by generous donations from Mount Alum Kenneth Gamble '58 and Hudson Valley Bank.

Mount Students, through Campus Ministry, volunteered at the Mercy Center in the South Bronx on Thursday, Dec. 12 to help Mercy with its annual Children's Program Christmas Party.
About 20 Mount students, freshmen through seniors, sang Christmas Carols to over 35 children from 5 to 14 years old at the event, and then helped them to make (and eat!) gingerbread houses from graham crackers and vanilla icing. Keep Reading

 | Patty Zippo: "The Mount is like family" |
In 2003, Patty and Mickey Zippo, who originally hail from Long Island, NY and live in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx, were at the Westchester County Center School Fair when they met Bro. John Bantz '56, then President of Mount St. Michael Academy.
Their son, Emil, was in eighth grade and attending public school and the family was actively looking at high schools that Emil would like and at which he would thrive. Emil had a preference for an all- boys high school and also wanted to play hockey.
Bro. John chatted with the family at the Fair and invited Emil and the Zippos to come and visit the Mount. Says Patty, "We met Bro. John and were really interested in what he said about the Mount and how it was such a strong school for young men in terms of academics, character building and camaraderie." Emil visited the Mount with his parents and said, " Mom, this is it!" Keep Reading

Jim Gillick '72: On Dec 11, 2012, my daughter and her husband Kimberly and Matt Fazackerley, welcomed their baby girl into the world:

 | Jaime Hutter, son of Mount Alum Greg Hutter '6 |
His son Jaime competed and completed his first triathlon this past January in New Zealand. A professional had the winning time which was just over 9 hours. Jaime was happy with his 11 and 1/2 hours.
Hutch still tells his son about his intense full court games with Dooley and Brennan and two others during summers at Parkchester. The games would go all day long and if your team lost, you sat. Let it be known the "Three Amigos" sat very little.
 | Terrence O'Sullivan '76 |
Terrence O'Sullivan, recent retiree from the U.S. Army, came back to Mount to
hold the trophy the 1975 Mountaineers captured in the 1975 Turkey Bowl with a 9-6 victory.
Prior to that game, Hayes had held the trophy for 9 years.
Thank You to all veterans who continue to serve our country!

Parents |
|
When Emil attended the Mount, from 2003-2007, the Zippos threw themselves in as some of the most involved parents at the school Patty joined the Parents Association right away and participated in all of the events that the PA organizes, like the Mother-Son Dance, the Father-Son Fishing Trip and fun-raising events like the Card Party. The Parents Association also raises money to provide scholarships.
"The parents were so welcoming to us right away," says Patty, "and it made us want to jump in and help. It feels like a family and the more we put into it the more we get out of it!" Patty now serves as President of the Parents Association.
Mickey Zippo became a part time lacrosse coach at the Mount when Emil attended, and his enthusiasm for the Mount and vice versa led to his current position as the full time assistant coach for the JV Lacrosse Team. Says Mickey: "The kids are great here."
Emil's younger brother Joe Zippo got to know and love the Mount through Emil, and came here in 2009. Joe plays ice hockey here, and will graduate in 2013.
Emil graduated from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT, where he studied business, and now works for Admit One in Manhattan.

Mercy Center, founded in 1990 as a counseling and support center, is run by the Sisters of Mercy and its mission is to empower women and their families in the South Bronx to liberate themselves from economic poverty.
Mercy promotes the right to an improved quality of life by addressing the needs of the whole person, developing skills for healthy family living and economic advancement, and building a community of respect, hospitality, and non-violence.
Thank you to Sister Connie, Mayra Nolan, Anthony DelGuidice and our Mount students for taking part in such a wonderful event.
