The Star

The November/ December
edition of
"The Star"
is now available online at the
Beth Chaim website
Tikkun Olam Opportunities

Every year, JWB Jewish Chaplains Council provides each military chaplain with a $600 discretionary stipend.
The funds guarantee that chaplains can go above and beyond for Jews in the U.S. armed forces-during Hanukkah, Passover, Purim, the High Holy Days, Sukkot, on Shabbat, and as other needs arise throughout the year.

To maintain this stipend program, JWB has launched Operation Go Above and Beyond. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by Dec. 1.

Inspired by this campaign, a generous donor is now pledging to match up to $5,000 on all donations made by Dec. 1. This match could increase your gift by 50 percent and bring the total raised to $15,000!

Air Force Chaplain Alan Kahan, at Lackland Air Force Base, will use the funds to make Mitzvah Kits for next year's 50-100 graduating airmen. As these young men and women go to duty stations around the globe, they'll have their own kits.

"The kits include a Star of David for their dog tags, candles and candlesticks, a havdallah candle, printed prayers and blessings for Shabbat and meals, a hand-colored challah cover, a kiddush cup, and a kippah. Many graduates will be on bases hours from a Jewish community. When I traveled to Kuwait, I gave the kits to service members who did not have a Jewish chaplain. The kits maintain and deepen Jewish life for Jews serving all over the world."

Please donate to Operation Go Above and Beyond to ensure that our Jews who serve have access to Jewish life-something we know you value. And remember, the $5,000 match makes your gift go that much farther.

Contra Costa Interfaith Housing
Opportunities for Involvement

The Contra Costa Interfaith Housing has recently launched a new program for chronically homeless families, FISH (families in supportive housing).  Twenty formerly homeless families will be permanently housed and offered a variety of services including case management, employment support, mental health counseling, and youth academic enrichment. Due to this expansion, CCIH is in high need of furnishings, especially beds. We are seeking new mattresses and box springs (twin or full), along with bed frames (can be gently used).
For a full list of furnishing needs:

If you have any questions, contact gloria@ccinterfaithhousing.org. Thank you for helping make a home for formerly homeless families.

Toiletries Drive
We are collecting large, full size cosmetics and toiletries, as well as diapers, tissues and wipes for newcomer families of JCFS of the East Bay. Travel size toiletries are also still being accepted.

Donations will be presented as a "Welcome Bag" including: toothbrushes/paste, soaps, combs, deodorant, dental floss and other basic items.
Please bring your items to the drop box in the Beth Chaim foyer or to the office.
Food Bank of Contra Costa
Hunger is year-round battle. A reminder that we have a collection barrel in our lobby which is regularly picked up for distribution for those in need in our community.

Yahrzeit Candles
In our tradition, we say of loved ones who have died, "May their memory be a blessing" and mark this ongoing process of turning memory into blessing by lighting a yahrzeit candle and reciting the Mourner's Kaddish on the anniversary of their death. We will send you a reminder card two weeks before the anniversary of your loved one's passing and hope that you will consider attending Shabbat services to honor their memory.
A yahrzeit candle is available for you to pick up at the Beth Chaim office at no charge for your observance.

Thank you to Judith Markowitz and Glen Schabacker for underwriting the Yahrzeit program.
