One out of every four families is touched by mental illness. The challenges are daunting.
P'tach Libeynu is working to educate people about mental illness; to provide needed support to families and their loved ones with mental illness; and to further this mission by helping Jewish synagogues and agencies to make mental illness a recognized part of tikkun olam.

Tikkun Olam Opportunities

Toiletries Drive
We continue to collect full and travel size cosmetics and toiletries for refugees of all ages for
JCFS of the East Bay.
Donations will be presented as a "hygiene kit" including: toothbrush/paste, soap, comb, deodorant, brush, dental floss and other basic items.
Please bring your items to the drop box in the foyer or to the office.
Food Bank of Contra Costa
Hunger is year-round battle. A reminder that we have a collection barrel in our lobby which is regularly picked up for distribution for those in need in our community.

Yahrzeit Candles
In our tradition, we say of loved ones who have died, "May their memory be a blessing" and mark this ongoing process of turning memory into blessing by lighting a yahrzeit candle and reciting the Mourner's Kaddish on the anniversary of their death. We will send you a reminder card two weeks before the anniversary of your loved one's passing and hope that you will consider attending Shabbat services to honor their memory.
A yahrzeit candle is available for you to pick up at the Beth Chaim office at no charge for your observance.

Thank you to Judith Markowitz and Glen Schabacker for underwriting the Yahrzeit program.

I-SRV Hunger Project
Feeding Children Everywhere

Packaging meals, Creating change, Providing hope.
Interfaith San Ramon Valley (I-SRV) and Beth Chaim have teamed up with Feeding Children Everywhere for a second annual Hunger Project event, bringing the community together to pack food for children in need.

We will package 200,000 healthy meals for hungry children in Contra Costa county. This event is really something special.  There aren't many community service events that both children AND adults can really get involved in, and this one allows ANYONE ages 5 and up to come package meals.  We all WIN when we serve together. Come make a difference in our community.  There will be great music, good fun and a volunteer experience like no other!

2016-17 School Year - Hebrew Power Hour
For the next school year (2016-2017), the midweek Hebrew classes will be moved to Tuesday and Wednesday. This change works better for the synagogue calendar overall, creating a smoother week and allowing more time at the end of the week for Shabbat planning and B'nei Mitzvah preparation.
We are giving the congregation, and especially our Beit Midrash families, as much notice as possible, to allow families to plan their schedules accordingly. We thank you for your understanding as we move to a new schedule in September 2016.

Volunteers needed!
