Engaging Basic Scientists in Translational Research

RDC offers consultation to basic scientists who would like to engage in translational research.  We help you refine research ideas, improve grant proposals, and find

clinical collaborators.  In the past few months, MICHR faculty members Dan Clauw and Nick Lukacs visited all basic science departments in the medical school to highlight

MICHR programs that are of value to investigators transitioning to translational research.

Successful translational research relies on a set of vital skills, including

  • knowledge of human disease processes and translational research methodology;
  • the ability to navigate the regulatory maze;
  • the interpersonal skills and cultural understanding needed for collaboration between basic scientists and clinical scientists.
Basic scientists often need guidance and support to gain these skills, and we are here to help you.  If you, your research team, or your department would like to know more on how MICHR can help, please contact us.

Grant Writing Tips from RDC to You

This section provides grant tips and answers grant writing and submission questions.  If you have a question, please write to us.  We will reply individually to all questions, and you might find the answer to your question featured in the next newsletter as well!

Tip 1: Do you know that one common mistake for an R proposal is having too many Specific Aims? Very few proposals are criticized because they don't propose enough work; but many are criticized because they are too ambitious.  Propose 2-3 aims that are realistic and can be completed within the allowed budget and funding timeframe.

Tip 2Do you know that a critical element for a successful K proposal is to show your passion for the proposed training?  Use the candidate background section to let the reviewers know you as a person, show them how the training goals are close to your heart and why you strive to be a unique type of investigator by the end of the training grant.
