Five Thought Patterns

Have you ever wondered how the mind works? If so, yoga has the answer.

Yoga is a process of uncoloring thoughts in order to set aside false identities so that the true self can be uncovered.

If the mind is an ocean, each thought is an individual wave in the ocean. Those waves fall into five patterns. These patterns can be colored / not colored, meaning painful / not painful (kleshta / akleshta).*

Five Thought Processes:
  1. Seeing clearly, correct perception (pramana)
  2. Misconception, incorrect knowing (viparyayah)
  3. Imagination (vikalpah)
  4. Deep sleep (nidra)
  5. Memory, remembering (smritayah)
When I first began meditating, I realized how much time I spent either remembering the past or imagining the future, with very little awareness of the present. To this day, I'm amazed at how little I'm in the here-and-now. Choppy mind, skewered results (viparyayh).

Ways to gain correct perception (pramana):
  1. Direct Perception (pratyaksha): Correct knowledge through direct perception and experience. Ex: I look out the window and see rain and I know it is raining.
  2. Inference (anumana): Deduction, reasoning. Ex: Someone comes in from outside dripping wet. I infer that it is raining.
  3. Other's testimony (agamah): relying on someone else's testimony or authority. The weatherman said rain is expected throughout the evening.
Become mindful of where you spend your mental activity. Is it daydreaming (vikalpah) about someday, when x-y-z happens? Or perhaps its rehashing the past (smritayah), stuck in shoulda-woulda-coulda? Will this lead to pealing away the clouds of mis-perception or add to it?

Experience is the best teacher. Let me know how your results turn out! I would love to hear from you.

Namaste,

Debbie
