Kleshas: 5 Colorings Cause Suffering

According to yoga philosophy, there are five reasons for suffering. They are known as the kleshas, or five coloring of the mind.

The kleshas, or veils, are discussed in chapter two of the Yoga Sutras. It states that the mind causes suffering because it doesn't see things clearly. The sutras then give us a way to manage these colorings. The goal is to have a clear mind, without colorings to cloud perception of our true, Divine nature.

The Five Kleshas, Colorings, or Veils

Avidhiya:  Spiritual forgetfulness, false knowledge, misperception, and innocence of our Divine nature. This is the main coloring of the mind from which all others spring forth.

Signs of avidhiya:
  1. Confusing the temporary for the eternal
  2. The impure for the pure
  3.  Suffering for pleasure
  4. The trivial for the essential
Asmita: "I-Am-Ness," ego, identity, anything that separates you from others. Example: During a yoga class, checking out other people's poses and comparing yourself to them to see if you're better or worse than they are.

Raga: Attraction, cravings, desire, chasing after pleasure. Example: That (drug / drink / sex / shopping / gambling / activity) felt good yesterday / in the past, maybe it will feel good if I do it again, and again, and again. When the craving controls you is when it becomes raga.

Dvesha: Aversion, resistance, pushing away. Example: Many people have an aversion (dvesha) to snakes, while in some cultures, snakes are highly revered.

Apinivesha: Fear in general, but mainly fear of death or loss of identity (asmita).

Dealing with the Colorings

Awareness and meditation help us overcome these causes for suffering so we can have a clear mind. Learn to witness your thoughts. Become the observer of your mind.

Label your thoughts:
  • Colored / Not Colored?
  • Useful / Not Useful?
  • Then choose:
    • Let it go: focus on a different thought
    • Explore it: go into the depths of the thought
    • Cultivate it: Follow up on useful ideas and solutions to problems
Once the min ad is free of coloring the result is a radiant spirit in a state of high awareness (consciousness), connected to Source.

External influences are just seen as passing thoughts, like waves coming into to shore, only to be followed by more waves. A clear mind leads to a peaceful, relaxed body. Then joy arises from the inside out.
