"LOVE IS the new currency.

PEACE IS the new measure of success.

TRUTH IS the new security.

JOY IS the new status symbol."

~Debbie Barnett~

Be in the Bhav

One definition of yoga is more sustained joy for me. Being in a state of joy is known as "being in the Bhav," short for Bhavana or bliss state. Its the space you're in after a great yoga class. I call it being "yoga drunk," and caution my students to be sure to ground before driving in the yoga zone!

An interpretation of the famous sutra (YS 1:2) Yogaha Chitta Vritti Nirodhaha, "Yoga is consciousness united in the heart." The heart contains the 'hrid', the seat of the soul. When we connect to our own hearts, and the hearts of others, we feel our unity, our connection. The result? "Me' turns into 'we.'

Bhakti yoga is like the fast lane to the Bhav, since its the yoga of devotion, the yoga of heart. In Bhakti yoga, we connect with others from our hearts by offering our souls and spirits to the Divine in the form of music, dance, art, healing, creativity, conscious community, and inspiration. In the Bhav, we let go of judgments, shoulds, criticisms, and comparisons. One heart, one mind, one love, me to we.

The year marks the sixth annual celebration of love and devotion known as Bhakti Fest, a "spiritual
Woodstock" for our generation. See if you can catch a glimpse of the Bhav in the video below:
From the Bhakti Fest website:

"The festival is a vehicle for the evolution of human consciousness through a heart-centered revolution. Bhakti Fest builds a community of people drawn to follow the path of the heart - a devotional, prayerful, loving, healthful, respectful family. All the artists, presenters, and vendors embody, practice, and share the spirit of Bhakti through a variety of ways, including:

  • Continuous Kirtan
  • Yoga Classes
  • Meditations and Prayer
  • Teachings and Workshops
  • Eco-Friendly, Holistic Marketplace
  • Vegetarian, Vegan, and Raw Vegan Cuisine
  • Wellness Sanctuary
