The River Meditation   

I've been doing a guided meditation at the end of my classes lately. It's a good way to let go of the past so we can move forward into the future with a clean slate. It can be incorporated into your own meditation practice, during Savasana (final relaxation pose), or before falling asleep.  

 

It would be helpful to read it into a recorder and then play it back if you're doing this on your own. Most smart phones have free recording apps available.

 

Guided Meditation

 

Imagine you're lying on a sturdy raft tied to the bank of a gently flowing river. It's a beautiful spring day. The Sun is warm on your skin. There's a nice breeze. The scent of spring flowers fills the air. You hear birds singing and the sound of the river gently lapping at the sides of your raft. You're relaxed and calm.

 

Untie your raft from the riverbank. Allow the river's flow to carry your raft into the current. Let go of any need to control. Let go of any concern about where you are going. Trust that the river knows what it's doing. Relax further into your raft. Feel it drift downstream.

 

By letting go of the riverbank, you're letting go of the past. You're leaving behind any regret, resentment, anger, frustration, guilt, or shame. You left all of that behind when you moved into the flow of the river.

 

Enjoy the experience of drifting peacefully down the river without a care in the world. Take in the scenery along the way: the trees lining the riverbank, clouds passing in the bright blue sky, the breeze ruffling the leaves on the trees. There's no hurry. Everything is going according to plan. Stay as long as you like, enjoying a sense of freedom and release from the past.

 

Allow the river to deliver you to exactly where you need to be, at exactly the right time, with ease and grace. When you're ready, guide your raft to the edge of the river. Tie it to the bank under a shady tree. Spend a few moments preparing to disembark from your raft. Wiggle your fingers and toes. Roll your wrists and ankles. Reach your arms overhead for a nice long stretch.  

 

Step off your raft and onto the riverbank. Know that you are starting over with a clean slate. You've left the past behind, up river. You feel refreshed and rejuvenated.

Use this meditation whenever you need a break from your routine, or need help moving on from the past. By releasing the past, we're able to create the type of future we want.
