Gratitude & Grace  

Happiness is an inside job. No matter how hard we look, it's not something we can find outside ourselves without going within first. Gratitude and grace are key components to happiness.  

 

Denis Waitley said, "Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude."

 

It seems like gratitude and grace go hand in hand. The more gratitude I express, the more grace shows up in my life. Grace is the grease that makes life smooth. Nothing forced or coerced, allowing and receiving whatever comes with gratitude. Then when you offer grace to others, you get back gratitude, and the cycle continues.

 

I was speaking to a friend about gratitude. She thought I said "gladitude." I like that. To be glad for whatever comes our way as if we chose it will change our perspective on life.

 

Create space for gratitude in your life:

  • Bhakti yoga is the yoga of praise, devotion, and being of service. Bhakti yoga is the path that gives gratitude a voice (shubda - sound). Sing a little song, do a little dance, and look for ways to be of service.
  • Count your blessings: When things go wrong (and they will), turn your thoughts to what you have to be grateful for instead. Make a list before you go to bed of 10 things you have to be grateful for that day. 
  • Offer up gratitude to those whose path you cross on a regular basis - the clerk at the store, the person who keeps the restroom clean, your clients, friends, and family.

How to create more grace in your life:

  • Be compassionate - everyone is suffering, and everyone has struggles.
  • Practice forgiveness - of yourself and others for failings and mistakes.
  • Let go of judgment - of yourself, others, and your life situation.
  • Let go, period - resist trying to force your will and let things unfold in their own time.

Happiness doesn't just happen; it's up to you. You decide if your life with will be smooth and easy sailing, or a rough and rocky road. By practicing gratitude and being open to grace, we bring more happiness into our own lives and the lives of those we touch. Learn to cultivate an attitude of "gladitude."
