Tapas: Fire of Purification
The U.S. is in the midst of a massive heat wave. This heat reminds me of tapas, one of the niyamas, the yogic observances of self-control.

Like most Sanskrit words, tapas has many different meanings. Tapas can mean heat, purification, spiritual enlightenment, essential energy, zeal, and discipline.Tapas cultivates the drive, passion, and enthusiasm we need to propel us forward in life. According to B.K.S. Iyengar, "Tapas is the conscious effort to achieve ultimate union with the Divine and to burn up all desires which stand in the way of this goal."

Here are a few suggestions for using heat in the form of discipline to your benefit:

  1. Eat lighter, healthier meals while sitting down. Refrain from multitasking while you eat.
  2. Begin a meditation or journaling practice. 10 minutes a day goes a long way to cooling hot tempers that can arise when the heat is on.
  3. Begin a yoga practice if you don't already have one. If you have a yoga practice, aim for a slower pace, like a restorative or yin practice when it's hot.
  4. Let go of non-essentials. Simplify your life so that you are not expending energy on transient things.
  5. Drink plenty of water (between 2-3 liters) throughout the day to stay hydrated. Drink more if you exercise and/or live in a dry climate.
  6. Heat can zap your energy, so take time to move at a slower, more relaxed pace.

When the heat starts to get to you, think of it as a purification process. You're burning up that which no longer serves you, creating space for that which does.
