Harvest Assembly on Friday 16th October

Southampton City Mission will be coming to school on Friday 16th October to give a Harvest Assembly.Please bring donations in the form of tins, rice, pasta and cereals to the school by Friday.
 
All donations will be passed onto the Food Bank.

Thank you in advance for your generosity in support of this worthy cause.
Music Afternoon


Southampton Music Services (SMS) came to the school to give a concert on Friday afternoon. Led by Miss Hunting the children were entertained by a group of musicians before having an opportunity to try out various instruments. The music service will be providing music lessons at St.Winifred's School after half term. They will be offering lessons on violin, cello, flute, recorder, clarinet, trumpet, trombone and piano. Please contact the music service using the link above or complete a form available in the school office.   


Southampton Music Service will work with the school office to assist with the timetabling of lessons.
St.Winifred's School Choir

We are delighted to announce that Southampton Music Service will be running our School Choir. Mrs Grant will run our Choir after school on Thursdays from 3.30-4.15pm starting on 5th November. The choir is a free activity open to all pupils from Form 1 to 6. Please contact the school office if you would like to sign your child up to the choir.

Please note the Thursday Art Clubs will move to Tuesday after half term.
Form 6 this week

In English, we are continuing our study of different styles of recounts on the theme of UFOs and Aliens (the truth is out there!).  
 
In Maths, we will be looking at shape and angles as well as continuing with problem solving and tables practise.  
 
In Science, we will be studying animal and plant adaptations as we continue our Evolution and Inheritance topic.  
 
In Palaeontologists on Tour, we are researching different geological eras before considering how we can share all we have learnt in this topic with the rest of the School.  

Form 5 this week

English: As the leaves turn brown our thoughts turn wistful - yes, it's time for poetry in Form 5.
 
Maths: Now that we're getting the hang of simple percentages, we are going to re-visit place value this week.
 

History: This week we delve into the legend of Lawrence of Arabia.

Science: From looking at the stars we're going to take another look at the planets that make up our solar system this week. 
 
Art: With our William Morris unit drawing to a close we are taking a quick look at Andy Warhol before we start a new DT topic next term.
Coming up in Form 1

Form 1 will be learning to write poetry. They will also be learning about capital letters for proper nouns. They will be concluding the week by writing their own list poems about what they love and hate doing.

In Maths we will be reviewing and consolidating their learning for this half term.  One of the focus areas for further development this week will be money.

In Art the children will look at the artist Andy Goldsworthy's 'Leaves'.  Form 1 will be copying leaf patterns and creating their own patterned and textured leaf drawing.

We have our annual Autumn Walk at the Gregg School on Wednesday and then we'll
 be talking about our favourite characters in school.

The children can come in their games kit on Wednesday, but will probably change into their uniform during the day. If your child does not already have wellingtons and a waterproof in school, please bring them in for Wednesday. Thank you.

Our Letter and Sounds focus is 'voice sounds

Please can you also ensure that your child has a full change of clothes including socks, pants and possibly plimsolls or spare shoes in their school bag.           
Coming up for Form 3

Maths - this week we will be recognizing and describing 2D and 3D shapes. We will be identifying symmetry, horizontal and vertical lines and pairs of perpendicular and parallel lines. 

English - Form 3 will be starting a new topic looking at poetry and creating images. They will identify and use nouns, adjectives and descriptive phrases. The books we will be looking at are; Daddy Fell into the Pond, Lone Dog, Bug Chant and Wind Poems.
 
Science  - Form 3 will be looking at the effect of exercise  It will be red faces and huffing and puffing all around as the children feel the effects of exercise on their own bodies. During the exercises they record how they are feeling and measure changes.

In Form 2 this week:
In Maths we will begin the topic of measurement. We will use appropriate standard units to measure length, weight and capacity. We will also solve addition and subtraction word problems involving money.
 
In English we will continue to explore the genre of poetry. We will write our own poems using adjectives. We will look at the pattern and rhythm of the nursery rhyme London's Burning and we will compose a piece of music to accompany it! 
 
In RS we will talk about objects that are special to us and talk about why they are special . We will look at some artifacts and photographs from the Islamic religion. We will explore the meanings of these artifacts to Muslims.

 

Mrs Baldwin and Miss Sharratt loved all the imaginative excuse emails from Form 2! The children were awarded a house point.

School Uniform
There have been several issues with lost uniform this last week.

Please ensure all items, including shoes, are named.
Reception in the coming week

In Reception we will be thinking about short and tall animals and ordering objects by length.  We will read and act out the Gruffalo story and describe the characters, and we will have a go at making puppets of our favourite characters.  

We will be going on our Autumn Walk at the Gregg School on Wednesday- please can the children wear gym kit to school and bring uniform to change into.  Please ensure they have waterproofs and wellies in school so we are ready for the weather!
Form 4 this week
English: Form Four will be creating pictures with words using their most creative similes and metaphors.
 
Maths: We will be using our last week to focus on number and place value again with some addition, subtraction, multiplication and fractions thrown in to make it more interesting.
 
Science: We will be reviewing our progress for this term and create large posters explaining how sound is made and how we hear sound.
 
History: What are the greatest achievements by the Ancient Greeks? Form Four will investigate and host their very own achievement assembly.
 
RS: Using similes and metaphors Form 4 will look at how religions express their beliefs.
