Cross Country

Miss Brenton, our Games teacher, is prepared to run a cross country team at Southampton Sports Centre. The cross country events are scheduled to take place on Friday 2nd, 9th, 16th & 26th October 2015; 5th & 12th February 2016. Each event will occur between 4 - 5 pm. These events will form a league and the final team result will be based on number of finishes across all of the events. Children in Forms 3, 4, 5 & 6 are welcome to enter.
 
Please be aware that the school will not be able to transport the children to Southampton Sports Centre and that half-term falls between 19th - 31st October.

Music demonstration on 9th October

Southampton Music Services (SMS) will be providing music lessons at St.Winifred's School after half term.   They will be coming into school for an afternoon of music performance and demonstration, consisting of a concert followed by opportunities for the children to try out various instruments.  

Parents are invited to come in at 3.30pm to speak to SMS and ask questions about the how the music service runs.
Jeans for Genes

We raised £77 last week by inviting children to wear jeans for the day.

Achievement Assembly

The next Achievement Assembly will be on Monday 5th October. Any items that your child wishes to share should brought in to the School Office by Friday 2nd October at the latest. 

Form 6 this week

In English we are completing our work with Kipling's 'Just So Stories' before moving on to a new unit on recounts.
 
In Maths we are learning about multiples, factors and prime numbers.  
In Science we are looking at Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution and the contrast with Creationism.  
 
In our topic we are looking at the geology of fossils in the UK.  

Form 5 this week

In English we will be waving historical stores goodbye and moving on to look at recount texts and adverbials of time and space.

In Maths we are entering the world of shape.

In Science this week we will investigating the wonders of the universe and indulging in a little star gazing. 

In History we will be studying about women and WW1 as well as looking at the Gallipoli campaign.
Coming up in Form 1

Literacy - we are looking labels, lists and signs this week.
 
Maths - we are studying measures and shapes. We will also be using uniform units and metre sticks.
 
Geography - to learn vocabulary for different types of rain.

This week we will be discussing what our favourite things are.  

 Your children can bring in their favourite book to share.

Please remember the children need coats for our outdoor playtime.

Our theme this week is "My Favourite Things".

The phonic of the week is "i". 

Coming up for Form 3
Maths - this week we will be multiplying and dividing numbers mentally using known facts.  We will also be solving problems, including missing number problems and involving multiplication and division. 

English - continuing with the new topic of instructions and explanations.The class will be writing a simple set of instructions using powerful verbs to create a game. 
 
Science - Form 3 will continue with the theme of animals, including humans, looking at the transport of food and the right amounts of food needed from the foods we eat.

Reception in the coming week

In Reception we have been learning about more than and less than by playing a crocodile game.

Next week we will be thinking about our favourite pets and animals, reading Dear Zoo. We will be reading and writing animal names.

In Maths we will be continuing our work on 2D shapes and making patterns, and we will be putting sets of objects in order of size.

In Form 2 this week:
In Maths we will be learning different strategies to solve multiplication and division problems.
 
In English we will be continuing our non-fiction unit about postcards and letters.  We will be using the stories "Dear Teacher" and "The Boy who is Always Late" to write our own imaginative letters.  We will be using lots of adventurous vocabulary in our writing.
 
In Geography we will be using our knowledge of African animals to make our own 3D picture of a safari park including "the big five"!

School Uniform
There have been several issues with lost uniform this last week.

Please ensure all items, including shoes, are named.

Gregg School Open Evening  

 

You are invited to attend an Open Evening at the Gregg School, our senior school, on Wednesday 30th September, between 5.30pm and 8.30pm.

 

Form 4 this week
English: It's raining cats and dogs; you're driving me up the wall; sorry, I must fly - these are all examples of non-literal language we will be looking at and discussing.  
 
Maths: Better shape up Form 4 as we are studying 3-D shapes and their properties. We'll also be drawing them too with rules and compasses. 
 
Science: We will be investigating how musical instruments make different sounds and pitches. To do this we'll be making our own instruments.

History: 
The Elgin Marbles is the topic of hot debate this week as we discuss whether they should be returned or not. We will also discuss and write about where we'd prefer to live. Athens or Sparta?
 
Art: The work of Piet Mondrian is our inspiration for this weeks art lesson as we look at how the world looks when it's reduced to primary colours and horizontal, vertical lines. 
 
Music: 
We'll be getting 'In the Mood' with Glen Miller this week.
