The second full week of 2015 is well underway and a number of students, teachers and staff are in a health-struggle with their immune systems.  Help protect your child from germs and illness by teaching them to wash their hands with soap often during the day, stay away from classmates who are coughing or sneezing, and cough or sneeze into the crook of their elbow.  Have your child clean out his backpack regularly. Then clean the inside of the backpack periodically. Use a wet cloth or sanitary wipe to remove dripped milk and stuck-on food or crumbs.  A lot of germ swapping happens in school, and children will inevitably get sick sometimes, but you can limit the spread of viruses with good hygiene habits.  We really appreciate it when you call to let us know your child is sick so we have an idea of what virus is going through their classroom.  Please remember that our Handbook for Students and Parents states:

  • "Students with a fever (running a temperature of 99.0 or greater) ... must stay home 24 hours after their temperature returns to normal.  Please keep your child home if he/she has a severe cough or contagious illness until such time that the coughing or other contagious symptoms have subsided."  (Handbook - pg. 8)
  • "ONLY if the absence is for more than one day, may parents of children grades 2 through 8 call the office by 8:30 a.m. to inquire about picking up assignments. Assignments/books will be available in the office at 3:00 p.m.  One make up day will be given for each day missed.  Upon return, it is the responsibility of the student to immediately check with each of their teachers to receive any additional assignments and work missed." (Handbook - pg.6)

This next weekend is lengthened with a Monday (1/19) holiday for Martin Luther King, Jr. commemoration.  This gives all of us extra time to rest and battle/prevent possible colds or flu.

I wanted to publicly thank the Morrone family for providing the staff with lunch during our work in-service time on Friday.  It's nice not to have to plan for lunch so we have more time to collaborate.

To all of our pre-kindergarten families: please plan to come to the special tour of kindergarten and first grade next Thursday, January 22 at 9 AM.  It will give you a glimpse into the adventure that is elementary school.

Sincerely,

Nancy Lopez

Principal
