Vacuum Obedience Training
(Make your vacuum cleaner behave once and for all!)
|
Greetings,
Maybe old dogs can't learn new tricks...but you'll never believe the amazing things you can "teach" your vacuum cleaner to do!
We may not realize it, but we all go through a certain amount of "obedience training" throughout our lives. Our parents have a big hand in that... Don't:Pick your nose; Drive through stop signs; Cut in front of others in line. Do: Wash your hands before you eat; Wipe your feet before you walk in the house; Put your socks on before your shoes. Hey, these rules and behavioral expectations help keep us civilized, prevents problems and gives us guidelines for getting certain things done! Later on we teach others how to behave properly too. Dogs are probably the best example for this.
But let's be honest, when you are training a subject - whether it be a dog, a horse, or even another person - who really needs to know what they're doing? YOU! You need to have a firm understanding of your subject's needs, capabilities and how to communicate properly. Executing the right commands, with authority, should result in predictable responses from your subject. It's also important that YOU follow a predictable schedule with your subject, and are sure to take care of its basic needs to avoid accidents. For instance, if you don't let your dog out to go to the bathroom at regular intervals, you can expect he may have an accident in the house. Or he's more likely to eat your shoes if you forgot to leave him food while you were out. Similarly - your vacuum has specific needs and requires attention at regular intervals. So tell me - is your vacuum cleaner is being a real brat? Is it chewing up your rugs or leaving messes on the floor? Perhaps it's scratching your hardwood, hacking up dust in your face or blowing dustbunnies around the livingroom? Maybe it acts difficult when it's time to be groomed? Those are some pretty bad habits. But wait ...If you don't change the filter or bag in time - your vacuum will clog, causing it to cough dust and spit junk on your floor! If you aren't careful and suck up a sock - its belt may burn up leaving those ugly black streaks on your carpet! Sorry, your fault! However, if you take care of the basic needs of your subject, it'll help to establish a good behavioral foundation. When Fido has an empty bladder and a full belly - he can pay attention. Then, you can perform the commands you've learned, inducing predictable responses from Fido like sitting, staying, shaking paws and retrieving objects. So to complete the analogy - if you make sure your vacuum has a fresh bag, clean filters and a tight belt, it will clean your carpets properly and without incident!Once you and your vacuum have mastered basics like that - learn more about the other functions your vacuum might offer. Practice putting together the different configurations of tools; learn what the different switches and buttons are for and how they work. Then, put them to work for your advantage! Have variable suction control and a soft dusting brush? Try vacuuming your blinds, lamp shades or dusty drapes! Attach the extension wand to the stretch hose dust your moldings, ceiling fans, dryer vent or behind the refrigerator. WOW! What cool, useful tricks!! Every vacuum purchased at Queen Vacuum comes with a complete, complimentary demonstration and personal instruction session. We take the time to review your new vacuum's features and accessories, teach you how and why they work, and how to use them in different situations in your home. Got a Question? Ask Alice!
Queen Vacuum's mascot, Alice, is the go-to gal for all your vacuum-related questions!
Q: "Sue" from Allenhurst asked:
I recently bought several very expensive antique oriental rugs for my home. I had gotten accustomed to vacuuming my old, regular rugs with my trusty upright vacuum cleaner. But before I go near them, I wanted to ask whether it is safe to use my vacuum on this fancy type of carpeting?
A: I'm glad you thought to ask first, Sue. Our repair facility is all too familiar with the destruction caused by using the wrong vacuum on certain carpets! Vacuums have gotten very powerful in the past decade...insanely so in some cases. On top of that - one of the biggest mistakes folks make is trying to use a vacuum with a "power nozzle" (the electrically-powered rotating brush) on carpets with very long and/or delicate fibers. Most all upright vacuums use such a powered brushroller. This is the feature that makes these vacuums so effective at deep cleaning regular carpeting; the rotating brushes wicking up fuzz and hair while separating the carpet fibers to allow the vacuum's suction to penetrate deep down. However, the delicate or long, shaggy fibers of specialty rugs can get literally chewed to smithereens by the aggressive suction and agitation of a typical vacuum cleaner.
Back in the "olden days," prior to the invention of vacuums, people had to take their rugs outdoors to beat them with a stick (quite a workout and a pretty dusty endeavor.) If you currently had no other choice, you could of course try the old-fashioned method. But if you'd rather not spend the afternoon moving furniture and lugging the carpet outside, just be sure to use a more gently-set up vacuum.
What you need is a vacuum cleaner that can be used in a "straight-suction" mode. Typically a canister-style unit is best. Canister vacuums (as opposed to uprights) can be bought in one of two forms: "Straight-suction or as a "power-team. " The most common of the two are power-team vacuums which offer the electrified "power nozzle" attachment I mentioned before (which is what makes it perform like an upright vacuum, when attached.) This type costs a bit more, because they offer the performance of two vacuums in one. These offer the greatest amount of versatility, able to clean absolutely anything you throw at them. Use the power nozzle to deep-clean your regular rugs.
But in your case, Sue - you'll definitely want to take that power nozzle off to use the vacuum as "straight-suction." For your oriental rug a gentle, brushless carpet attachment would work best on its delicate, smooth pile. Alternately, a deeply-grooved rug tool would be best if it were thick, shaggy pile like a "flokati" rug or traditional shag. While you're at it, you can use a different soft-bristled floor brush to dust your hard floors throughout the rest of the house.
The very best vacuums for this situation come equipped with variable suction control; a feature that allows you to can lower the suction power if one of your carpets is even more delicate than another. We recommend high-quality vacuum brands like Miele and Sebo to properly care for your high-end flooring investments.
