Got a Question? Ask Alice!
Queen Vacuum's mascot, Alice, is the go-to gal for all your vacuum-related questions!
Q: "Gene" from Red Bank writes: What is all this talk about HEPA filters? I don't really think I understand what they're for. And I really don't get why some HEPA vacuums are so cheap and other so expensive...Can you explain?
A: Great question, Gene! And don't feel badly, because I think most people have some serious misconceptions about HEPA filters and vacuums.
First of all, "H.E.P.A." is an acronym that stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air (filtration.) HEPA filters, by definition, remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 micrometers (µm) in diameter. (A human hair is approximately 100 micrometers thick.)
Many vacuum cleaners now use HEPA filters as part of their filtration systems. This is beneficial for asthma and allergy sufferers, because the HEPA filter traps the fine particles (such as pollen and dust mite feces) which trigger allergy and asthma symptoms. A plain paper vacuum filter bag cannot do that. However, for a HEPA filter in a vacuum cleaner to be effective, the vacuum cleaner itself must be designed so that all the air drawn into the machine is expelled through the filter, with none of the air leaking past it. This is often referred to as "Sealed (or) True HEPA." Quite simply, it takes a carefully constructed, high-quality machine to achieve this difficult task - and that of course costs a little extra.
Competition is fierce and "HEPA" has become quite a marketable buzzword! But beware...Many vacuums commonly seen in stores or on TV today may utilize a HEPA filter or be marketed as HEPA, but leak profusely due to inefficient airflow design and poor construction. This means that dirt and allergens escape the machine blowing directly back into your breathing air. Internal leaks also allow unwanted dirt to pass through the motor, dramatically shortening the vacuum's life. This is just one reason why the prices and levels of performance can vary so dramatically!
Hope I've helped to clear up the confusion...but if you'd like to actually see and feel the difference between true HEPA vacuums and the counterfeits - stop into Queen Vacuum for a fun demonstration! HAPPY VACUUMING! - Alice
