The DIRT on Dyson and other bagless vacuum cleaners...
Facts that just might take your breath away!
|
Greetings,
This month we're talkin' dirty about bagless vacuum cleaners! Now bear with me, because this is not a pretty topic - but it's one that is extremely important to your respiratory health and the quality of life in your home.
It's the latest craze....BAGLESS VACUUMS! "What a revolution...what a dream....no bags, no worries...how easy and cost-effective!!" Craze? Craziness is more like it. I hate to be harsh, and I hate name names, but my job is to be straight with my customers.... All bagless vacuums are unsanitary, unhealthy, un-effective, do not last very long and are cost-prohibitive. Sorry, but that includes the Dyson.
How can I make such a bold claim? How do I know? Because vacuum cleaners are my life! Queen Vacuum (formerly named Graman's Vacuum) has been in operation for over 50 years. It's one thing just to sell vacuums - but the fact that we repair vacuums as well means that we understand vacuum cleaners inside and out, literally!
So put on your goggles and gloves - we're going to take a closer look at how your vacuum affects your world. If you already have a bagless vacuum, or are considering purchasing one, please consider the following statements and comments - you can make your OWN conclusions: Read More.... |

Did You Know?
Fascinating facts from the folks at Queen Vacuum!
BAKING SODA
Did you know...that baking soda
can be dangerous for your vacuum
cleaner?
Baking soda is one of nature's
great deodorizers. Effective and inexpensive, baking soda can be used in
so many different ways from cooking to cleaning, and is often used to absorb unpleasant
odors.
Thus, baking soda and other
powder-based carpet fresheners are very popular products on today's market.
When sprinkled on carpet and vacuumed up, these products work by absorbing bad smells, and often have added perfumes so as to leave behind a fresh fragrance
on the rug and in the room. That's great - except for two
big problems...
-
The
particles of baking soda are so small, that a portion of the product remains in
the carpet fiber and/or sifts beneath the rug and padding to the floor below
(never to be recovered!) Don't believe me? If you use baking soda and one day
rip up your carpeting, you'll see a surprising amount of its residue left
behind!
-
Again,
due to the small particle size of baking soda or freshener product, these can clog the pores of your vacuum's bag or filter.
This can drastically reduce suction resulting in poor cleaning
performance and cause clogs to form. Even worse, this dust can escape the
filtration system in which your vacuum's motor can "breathe" these particles
and eventually short out.
This is not to just bash baking
soda or Carpet Fresh; large quantities of any fine dust such as fireplace soot or
sheetrock/construction dust is highly
dangerous for almost any vacuum!
The good news is that there are carpet
freshening products available that are non-toxic, effective, are completely
recoverable, and will not clog or blow up your vacuum! We carry a product called... Read More

Got a Question? Ask Alice!
Queen Vacuum's mascot, Alice, is the go-to gal for all your vacuum-related questions!
Q: "Sheila" from Eatontown writes: I have allergies, and I use a bagless vacuum with a HEPA filter. What's the best way for me to clean and maintain my machine?
A: Well, Sheila - Please read this month's headline article about bagless vacuums. Unfortunately, you have a product that is not the best choice for your health situation. But to get you by, I recommend you bring the machine into the repair shop to be cleaned and maintained annually. This will limit your exposure to the dust an contaminants, deep clean the hard-to-get spots you won't be able to reach, and help extend the life of the machine.
In between times, enlist help! Allergic people should not touch or breath the vacuum's collected dust. Have a friend or family member empty the dust bin for you in a receptacle outside (not in the kitchen!) To keep the HEPA filter clean and maintain suction, have someone take it outside to tap out inside the dumpster, or against a tree. The vibration loosens the embedded dirt between the pleats of filter paper (never get this type of filter wet!) You can also gently loosen the dust with an old, dry toothbrush. If you have a washable sponge filter (like Dyson's have) rinse the filter under cool water. Squeeze and rinse repeatedly until the water runs clean. (Again don't do this in the kitchen sink where you prepare food!) Let the filter dry 100% before putting back into the machine. I hope you find these tips helpful.
And until next time....HAPPY VACUUMING! - Alice
