Where do you work?
I just graduated from Edgewood College with a major in mathematics and a minor in business and now work at CUNA Mutual Group as a Fidelity Bond Adjuster
What are some of your hobbies/sports you participate in?
I used to play basketball, but now my hobby is hanging out at Supreme. I also closely follow the University of Minnesota-Duluth football team and try to make all of their home games.
How long have you lived in Madison?
I have lived in Madison for 4 years now, but I grew up on a dairy farm with my parents and two sisters in Rio, WI.
What is your favorite part about being a member at Supreme Health and Fitness?
I love the fact that the staff knows almost all of the members by name. It definitely gives me an added incentive to keep coming back. Plus, the energy in the morning classes is awesome!
Anything else?
I LOVE to cook and have had 5 (yes 5) knee surgeries.
A thank you to Rachel Dilley for convincing me to join Supreme! Without her influencing me, I would not have joined the best gym in Madison.

Fitness Fun with Shana:
Top 10 Tips for Healthy and Happy Holidays
| |
What the holidays SHOULD be:
A time for laughter, smiles, friends, and family.
What the holidays SHOULD NOT be:
A time for excuses ("I always gain weight during the holidays" or "I'm too busy with parties to exercise"), a time to lose sleep, or a time for stress.
Take a look at your holiday plans for this year. Have you fit in exercise? Are you sticking to your generally healthy eating plan with a few extra treats here and there? Are you getting 8 hours of sleep per night?
In our house we make the holidays ALL about movement. From the Healthy Holidays Challenge at Supreme, to new and exciting outdoor adventures like skiing, sledding, and ice skating. Today we must have burned 1,000 calories building this world record snowman:
The American Council on Exercise sums it up greatly with their 10 Tips for a Healthy Holiday Season. Enjoy!
- Take time for yourself. Although spending time with friends and family is essential, it's also important to have at least five minutes to yourself to relax. Try practicing deep breathing exercise when you feel stressed out.
- Don't set unrealistic exercise goals. Aim to exercise 20 minutes a day instead of an hour. You'll be sure to get at least 20 minutes of exercise per day without feeling disappointed if you do not complete an hour.
- Enlist a friend or family member to exercise with you. Walking and talking with a friend can be a great way to burn extra calories and reduce your stress level.
- Create new, more active traditions. Instead of throwing a dessert or cocktail party, try snowshoeing or ice-skating as an alternate holiday event. Play powder puff football or build a snowman.
- Don't try to lose weight or stick to a restrictive diet this holiday season. If you enjoy your favorite foods in small portions, you'll feel more satisfied. Trying to stay away from certain foods may leave you feeling deprived, which may cause you to eat more than you intended to.
- Drink plenty of water. Although the cold weather may make you less inclined to grab a glass of water, it is just as important in the winter as it is during the summer. Water helps counter the dehydrating effects of travel or drinking alcoholic beverages, and it may also help satiate your appetite since thirst is often mistaken for hunger.
- Spread out meals. Don't feel like you have to eat everything at once. Try eating dinner early and then taking a walk before sitting down for dessert.
- Don't overdo it with alcohol or caffeine. These stimulants will only cause you more grief in the end by adding to your feelings of stress. Try drinking hot herbal tea instead of coffee, and keep the number of alcoholic drinks to a minimum.
- Don't aim for perfection, and enjoy the imperfections. There is no such thing as the perfect party or the perfect decorations or the perfect way to spend the holidays. Don't set yourself up for disappointment by placing unrealistic demands on yourself.
- Laugh. Laughing is a great tension reliever. It burns calories, reduces stress and usually means that you're enjoying yourself.

Racquetball Corner:
| |
Club Doubles 2012 is in the books. It was filled as usual with plenty of exciting doubles matches, great food, sore bodies on Sunday, and awesome racquetball camaraderie. Teaming with Dylan Wick, Ken Thompson took home his third club doubles championship in a row by defeating Jeff Hird and Chris Rockwell in a finals tie breaker where both teams shot lights out in stretches. For Wick it was a record setting 9th Club Doubles championship with a variety of partners over his long career at Supreme. Joe Allard and Sachin Mahesh were in the finals for a third straight year in the Men's A division and finally claimed a championship of there own besting Jeff Hird and Taunia Northouse. Sachin has already promised to fly back from India next year after their move to defend the title. Taunia proved she could compete with anyone and earned the respect of the boys club in her run to the finals with Hird (Who could be seen on the treadmill after 7 straight hours on the court putting the rest of us to shame). They played tough all day besting the defending champs (Kirk Maguire and Jeff Daniels) in the semis of the event. The Men's B division saw first time team Chet Gerlach and Chuck Kamp take home a title against long time B division dominaters Wade Whitmus and Moises Valeriano. The match was tightly contested throughout with rallies that got even the spectators tired. The always fun blind draw division saw Steve Anderson and Seth Pfaehler take down Jay Slagel and David Halzen in what is always a survival of the fittest competition as everyone is on there 6th or 7th match of the day by then. Congrats to all the champs and thanks to everyone who played in our first event of the 2012/13 season.
Men's Open 1st place Ken Thompson/Dylan Wick
2nd place Jeff Hird/Chris Rockwell
Cons Howie Grigg/Jason Kopras
Men's A 1st Sachin Mahesh/Joe Allard
2nd Jeff Hird/Taunia Northouse
Cons Alex Sielaff/Dean Hofstetter
Men's B 1st Chuck Kamp/Chet Gerlach
2nd Moises Valeriano/Wade Whitmus
Cons Scott Hottman/Terry Hanson
Blind Draw 1st Steve Anderson/Seth Pfaehler
2nd Jay Slagel/David Halzen
Cons Jeff Daniels/Nathan Counley
Club Singles 2013 is next on the tourney calendar at Supreme. It will be held the weekend of January 19th. It is your chance to cowboy (or cowgirl) up and take a crack at a club championship of your own. Sharpen your skills up and get ready to jump in the event. We are also offering a blind draw doubles event during club singles as well.
There are two weeks left in the current league session and due to the two week holiday break, league sign up will not start until Monday December 24th. The leagues themselves start the week of January 7th. You will be getting a separate league sign up reminder in a couple weeks so do not reply to this e-mail for sign ups for the winter session.
Don't forget to check out your Supreme pro shop for stocking stuffer ideas for your favorite racquetball players. Ektelon finally came through with a shipment of merchandise so we have a variety of balls, shoes, gloves, grips etc... in stock. Not to mention, we match internet pricing on all racquets so why not support a local pro shop instead some strangers on the web? Also consider a pro shop gift certificate or lesson with Howie (still only $30/hr for club members) as a great gift idea for the racquetballer in your life. All right, enough with the hard selling, enjoy your holiday season and make sure you make Supreme and racquetball part of your resolution for the New Year.
Thanks for your support of our club,
Howie
