NURSING NOTICES  /  NOTES INFIRMIERE
The Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Nurses Group (CHPC NG) is comprised of approximately 200 Canadian nurses who are interested in hospice palliative care and who work in diverse settings and roles across the country. The CHPC NG has a voluntary executive board of 9 members who actively lead the work of the group towards achieving its mission of "defining and advancing the unique body of knowledge and the holistic approach used in hospice palliative care nursing; supporting hospice palliative care nursing research, education, practice and administration at a national level; promoting hospice palliative care networking opportunities to enhance communication and learning among Canadian nurses; influencing hospice palliative care public policy development at the provincial/territorial level and national level". The CHPC NG is administratively supported by the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association and is a member of CNA's Canadian Network of Nursing Specialities. NG members are therefore able to contribute to the hospice palliative care nursing certification examination, develop and maintain hospice palliative care nursing standards as well as have a voice in broader nursing issues. The CHPC NG executive would like to inform Schools of Nursing faculty that the NG can act as an agency for undergraduate and graduate nursing students to do a practicum in such courses as community/global health, leadership, professional practice or similar courses. To date the University of Victoria and Dalhousie University have both enabled students to participate in learning activities within the NG. If you or any of your students are interested in learning more about how to become involved in the NG or how to do a practicum with the NG please contact our Communication Coordinator, Brenda Hearson (bhearson@virtualhospice.ca).

See the NEW Canadian Community Health Nursing Professional Practice Model (2013) and the REVISED Canadian Community Health Nursing standards of practice (2011) on the www.chnc.ca website.

CASN in collaboration with Community Health Nurses of Canada (CHNC) developed the Canadian Community Health Nursing Professional Practice Model. A literature review, environmental scan, focus groups and a modified Delphi process were conducted by an expert group. The expert group included frontline nurses, managers, consultants, directors, educators, researchers, and senior decision makers in community health nursing from across Canada. The community health nursing professional practice model was created using Hoffart & Woods' (1996) definition of a professional practice model, which is the structure, process and values that support nurses' control over the delivery of nursing care and the environment in which care is delivered. In the practice model there are 13 component parts: client, code of ethics, community health nurse, community health nursing standards, delivery structures and process, determinants of health, discipline specific competencies, government support, management practices, professional relationships & partnerships, professional regulatory standards, theoretical foundation, and values and principles. Simultaneous to the practice model development was the revisions to the Canadian Community Health Nursing standards of practices. The professional practice model and the standards of practice are valuable resources for courses in theory and professional practice on community health nursing.
