Terminal project proposal heads to Burbank Planning Board -- The clock is ticking for members of the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority to get all the required approvals they need to place a proposed 14-gate replacement terminal project on the Nov. 8 ballot. The authority ultimately needs approval from the Burbank City Council and the city's voters to move forward with its plans. However, the proposal to build a 355,000-square-foot terminal - preferably on the northeastern section of the airfield known as the B-6 parcel - will first need to be reviewed by the Burbank Planning Board. Why airports have to speed-date airlines -- In the subterranean depths of a downtown Denver hotel ballroom, airport executives from across North America are gathered at 8:30 a.m. on a Tuesday. Many were out late the night before, commiserating. Times are tough in the airport trade. They queue up for a breakfast buffet featuring waffles and 2-inch-diameter egg-and-spinach sandwiches. They reload their coffees. Then, at 9 a.m. sharp, the aviation nerds troop into an adjacent room, where the airline representatives await them. Justin Bachman/Bloomberg

World's Best International Airports -- Unlike the dreary, functional (and all too often unfunctional) depots many travelers dread passing through, the best airports in the world are as efficient as they are engaging. In many cases, they are evocative of their broader locations, giving arriving passengers a sense of the destination before they even exit customs-and giving fliers on a layover a peek at the landscape beyond the terminal gates. You can't take an Uber home from these airports -- When you land at the airport, all you want is a ride home or to a hotel. Yet that's one of the few places in some cities where Uber, Lyft and other ride-sharing services aren't. Of the 40 busiest U.S. airports, 10 don't allow pickups unless drivers have a chauffeur's license or livery plates, including Atlanta, Orlando, Detroit, Boston and Philadelphia. Seattle, Minneapolis and New Orleans started allowing legal ride-sharing pickups only this year. Miami-Dade County approved an ordinance on May 3 allowing ride-sharing companies. That will change in 2018 thanks to an agreement between the Fort Worth Transportation Authority (The T) and the airport. Sandy Smith/Next City

U.S. airlines' 2016 dive deepens to worst in five years -- U.S. airline stocks moved closer to their biggest annual decline in five years after Credit Suisse Group AG said a critical financial gauge won't turn positive until the end of next year and trimmed earnings estimates for the largest carriers through 2018. Rising fuel prices, an unwillingness to reduce capacity growth and increased labor costs are adding to a gloomy outlook for carriers that are already contending with sustained declines in passenger revenue for each seat flown a mile, Julie Yates, an analyst at Credit Suisse, said in a note to clients Wednesday. No more big spending as Virgin tackles costs -- Virgin Australia will be nursing a financial hangover for several more years as it seeks to get back on the path of sustainable earnings growth after half a decade of heavy spending. Not unlike the home renovator who has taken out a second mortgage to add on another storey and splash out on extensive renovations, the financial realities have kicked in for Australia's second-largest airline. That is not to say the investment has been a waste of money because the end result is a vast improvement on what existed previously. Michael Smith/Financial Review

Your airport line nightmare has been fixed-for now -- The 2016 U.S. Airport Summer From Hell tour has been postponed, though the band may reschedule for later this summer. After weeks in which airlines and airports issued dire warnings that the Transportation Security Administration was likely to suffer nightmarish security-screening delays, the queues have returned to their traditional, non-newsworthy duration. The TSA even boasted on Tuesday about average wait times of less than 10 minutes over the July 4 holiday weekend, as well as PreCheck lanes half that duration. Justin Bachman/Bloomberg

Man with iPhone gun case at airport gets shamed by police -- It's dangerous to think you're clever. You're not likely to be clever if, for example, you do something dangerous at an airport. But one man at London Stansted Airport seemed to think he was. There he stood with what looked like a gun in his back pocket. The local Essex police weren't pleased to see him. Indeed, in a Twitter post, they presented a picture of the man's rear. They added the caption: "You have a split second decision to make..." It was, in fact, an iPhone case. CNET
