Earlier this month, the Board of Airport Commissioners gave the green light to a policy creating a permitting process for app-based ride-hailing  companies such as Uber and Lyft to operate at LAX. LAX congestion demands regional solutions -- For those who avoid Los Angeles International on any holiday whatsoever anyway, the notion that in the future "every day will be like Thanksgiving Day" at the big airport sends shivers down the collective spine. The largest air terminal on the West Coast is not the absolute worst one in the nation these days. It's just close to that. It's No. 2, for instance, on the Conde Nast Traveler Worst Airports in America list, beating out only New York City's La Guardia. Los Angeles Daily News Editorial Board

Long Beach Airport noise violations fund library and local nonprofits -- When the city of Long Beach throws the book at airlines that violate its noise limits, the hefty fines end up buying books for city libraries and funding other charitable activities. The latest airline to face a fine is Michigan-based cargo hauler Kalitta Charters. This week it agreed to pay $54,000 to settle 13 criminal noise complaints. Long Beach City Prosecutor Doug Haubert says the money will go to the Long Beach Community Foundation. Sharon McNary/KPCC

New faces, new roles taken on at airport authority in Burbank -- To the list of changes discussed or implemented at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank in recent months - new Southwest Airlines service to San Francisco International Airport, retirement of a longtime spokesman, a possible new name, a proposed replacement terminal and sale of a 58-acre parcel - add the somewhat more routine changeover on the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority. International traffic helps lift JWA -- John Wayne Airport had an 8% year-over-year hike in international travelers in June, its first monthly increase of the year. About 32,000 international fliers passed through JWA's gates last month compared with 29,600 in June 2014. The airport's year-to-year declines in international traffic ranged from drops of 5% to 35% in each of the first five months of 2015. Southwest Airlines began flying to Puerto Vallarta on June 7, which accounted for some of the 8% increase. Paul Hughes/Orange County Business Journal

Consultant: Here's how you catch an airline in Chico -- The consulting company hired to evaluate the return of commercial air service to Chico made it clear there are steps that can be taken. AvPORTS representative Tom Reich spent more than an hour presenting information and a strategy to the Chico Airport Commission at its quarterly meeting Tuesday. There were surprises, such as AvPORTS' assertion that Redding travelers could be talked into traveling out of Chico and that most passengers who fly out of Chico end up in the Los Angeles area. Overhauling La Guardia, an airport with a historical name but a tarnished image -- Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has declared that the $4 billion rebuilding planned at La Guardia Airport in Queens will amount to replacing the airport "in its entirety." So is it time, after 76 years, to replace the name, too? Patrick J. Foye, the executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs New York City's airports, said this week that there were no plans to do so. David W. Dunlap/New York Times

Persistent runway debris prompts upgrade at Dubai -- Dubai International Airport plans to begin using a camera-based foreign object debris (FOD) detection system early in 2016 to help the operators more quickly identify and remove debris from runway areas, eliminating a persistent safety problem. Alaska Air Group maintains Seattle market share while hinting at reduced 2016 capacity growth -- Although Alaska Airlines continued to post negative passenger unit revenue growth in 2Q2015, it is narrowing the gap with the US industry average. Seattle is one of the markets where industry capacity has been growing over the past two years as Delta Air Lines has made an aggressive push from the airport. Alaska has responded by taking steps to preserve its market share in Seattle, and concludes that its position at its largest hub for YE2015 remains unchanged from YE2012. The airline has sustained its share by fortifying Seattle with additional frequencies in some markets, and new route additions. CAPA

Delta Air Lines to buy stake in China Eastern Airlines -- Delta Air Lines is paying $450 million for a stake in China Eastern Airlines, a move the carrier hopes will help it gain access to China's burgeoning travel market. The investment will give Delta a 3.55% stake in Shanghai-based China Eastern. Each airline's board must OK the deal. No timeline was given for when that might occur. If approved, Delta says the deal will boost connecting options for both companies. Ben Mutzabaugh/USA Today

A major airline says there's something it values more than its customers, and there's a good reason why -- At Southwest Airlines, employees come first. Yes, you read that right: The airline puts employee happiness above customer satisfaction. The approach might seem unconventional - but it makes perfect sense and seems to be working just fine for the Dallas-based airline that employs about 47,000 people and serves more than 100 million customers annually. Airlines give in-flight entertainment options an update -- With more in-flight entertainment than ever, the longest flights can often seem short these days. On a recent trip to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific, for example, I could build a list of video favorites from more than 100 movies, with options ranging from new Oscar nominees like "American Sniper" and "Mr. Turner" to classics like "Casablanca." Elaine Glusac/New York Times

L.A. City Council reinstates ban on unpermitted park and beach vending --The Los Angeles City Council voted Wednesday to reinstate a ban on unpermitted vending at city parks and beaches, which could impose escalating fines and eventually misdemeanor charges against people who sell their wares or services there without getting city permission. L.A. lawmakers had already voted to draft such rules in June, with backers arguing that the city needed to protect itself from being sued if someone were hurt by an unlicensed vendor. Wednesday's 12-3 vote approved the final wording of the ban. Emily Alpert Reyes/Los Angeles Times

L.A. mayor and police chief visit Leimert Park after flare of violence -- Amid a year of rising crime across the city and days after a series of South L.A. gang shootings left one man dead and several people wounded, Mayor Eric Garcetti and Police Chief Charlie Beck took a walk through Leimert Park on Wednesday. They handed out baseball cards to kids, popped into businesses in the village - a historic hub of African American culture in L.A. - and talked to residents about quality-of-life issues and the new officers they would see in the area.
