John Wayne Airport posts May 2015 statistics -- Airline passenger traffic at John Wayne Airport increased in May 2015 as compared to May 2014. In May 2015, the Airport served 839,813 passengers, an increase of 4.9% when compared to the May 2014 passenger traffic count of 800,721. Commercial aircraft operations increased 1.0%, while commuter aircraft operations decreased 4.1% when compared to May 2014 levels. Delta to boost transcontinental capacity from New York JFK -- Delta Air Lines will expand transcontinental capacity on flights from New York JFK to Los Angeles and San Francisco. Starting in November, Delta will add an additional daily JFK-LAX flight to bring its total daily flights between the two airports to 10. Four of the 10 flights will be operated with Boeing 767s while six will be 757-200 flights. Also in November, Delta will switch from 757s to 767s on three of its eight daily JFK-SFO flights. Delayed flights at LAX all summer, runway repair blamed -- Get ready for more flight delays at LAX this summer - and not just because of heavy vacation travel. One of the runways at Los Angeles International Airport will be closed all summer and parts of the fall starting Monday due to federally mandated construction, airport officials said. The northern runway near Lincoln Boulevard is being taken out of commission for 113 days until Oct. 19 as the airport performs upgrades to create more room for safe landing and departures of airplanes. DTW employees likely to get separate pension system -- A pension system separate from Wayne County would be formally created for Detroit Metro Airport retirees and eligible employees under a plan approved today by the board of the Wayne County Employees Retirement System, which would continue to administer the system. The airport board still has to vote, but it's expected to do so at a meeting July 15. SAV airport cracking down on Uber drivers -- Passengers looking for another way to get home from the airport, now have it. Tallahassee's airport goes international -- From here on, call it the Tallahassee International Airport. On Monday, city commissioners and officials unveiled a new logo, name and sign inside the airport terminal. The move marks a new chapter in Tallahassee's economic development, one city leaders hope will result in more options and cheaper air fares for travelers. U.S. Coast Guard helicopter makes hard landing, flips over at San Francisco airport -- A U.S Coast Guard helicopter made a hard landing Monday and flipped on its side, officials said. All three crew members abroad the helicopter were not injured and "walked away" from the crash, according to the San Francisco International Airport. Dem senator to airlines: Drop seat change fees for parents -- Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) is pushing the Obama administration to require airlines to drop seat change fees for parents who are traveling with their children. Airlines have been criticized for charging parents to select seats that are next to their children on flights in recent years. Asiana faces new class action suit from passengers in 2013 plane crash -lawyer -- South Korea's Asiana Airlines Inc is facing a new class action suit from passengers on a plane that crashed in San Francisco in 2013 that seeks a combined $30 million in damages, a lawyer for the passengers said. Three teenagers from China died in the crash and more than 180 passengers out of about 300 on board the Boeing 777 plane sustained injuries. The lawsuit brought by 53 passengers is the first to be brought in South Korea. Reuters

How United Airlines is changing its policies for diverted flights -- United is taking a new approach in handling diverted flights. Whenever possible, United told employees it is going to mix up where it sends diverted domestic flights when important airports, such as Denver and Houston, cannot handle arrivals due to bad weather. In the past, United would send as many diversions as possible to obvious airports, like Colorado Springs for Denver and Austin for Houston. But United employees at those airports can't necessarily handle all the extra workload, so the carrier is going has started sending diversions to more airports under a plan it implemented in June. America West pilots win court ruling, and American Airlines seniority talks have been delayed -- On Monday, a board of arbitration was scheduled to begin hearing from the various sides about how a single seniority list should be crafted for pilots from American Airlines and US Airways. American Airlines manager arrested in Pittsburgh on sex crimes charges -- An American Airlines senior manager who was part of the company's initial response on 9/11 was arrested in an undercover sting operation, accused of trying to meet a woman and her 10-year-old daughter for sex, agents with the state Attorney General's Office said. Ray Howland, 55, of Arlington, Texas, remained in the Allegheny County Jail, unable to post $150,000 bail. Porter Airlines fined $150,000 for violating CRTC's anti-spam rules -- Porter Airlines has agreed to pay a $150,000 penalty for violating Canada's anti-spam legislation in how it sent out certain emails to customers. In the agreement reached with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission announced Monday, Porter Airlines acknowledged that it failed to comply with the law. The investigation looked at emails sent between July 2014 and April 2015, that did not contain a mechanism to unsubscribe to the emails, or it was not clearly or prominently set out. Bag-fee holdout JetBlue poised to add charge in fare revamp -- Say goodbye to a free checked bag on JetBlue Airways Corp. if you buy the cheapest ticket. The airline is set to introduce a new fare scale as soon as Tuesday and missing will be its signature, complimentary luggage policy. The change will leave Southwest Airlines Co. as the only major U.S. carrier that doesn't charge for an initial checked suitcase in coach. JetBlue has said it plans to unveil three-tiered Fare Options pricing this quarter, which ends June 30 but has declined to say if the company will meet a self-imposed deadline. Southwest launches nonstop flights to St. Louis, Orange Co. -- Southwest Airlines announced it is now offering new nonstop service between Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and St. Louis and Orange County. The Austin-St. Louis service was scheduled to begin on Sunday. Flights will depart at 1:25 p.m. The return flight departs St. Louis at 4:15 p.m. The first nonstop flight to John Wayne Airport in Orange County was also scheduled to start on Sunday. FAA convenes panel to thwart airline cyberattacks -- The Federal Aviation Administration is developing a set of cybersecurity protections intended to defend aircrafts from hackers. The agency has convened a committee composed of pilots and representatives from plane manufacturers and parts suppliers, The Wall Street Journal reported. The group was scheduled to hold its first meeting this month, although its activities are private. Some NFL teams are being probed for using drones to film practice -- National Football League teams have taken to the skies in their search for a competitive edge, launching drones to film their practices. Appeals court overturns harsh 14-year prison sentence in laser strike case -- The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that a California man who had been sentenced to 14 years in prison for firing a laser at two helicopters did not deserve that sentence. After hearing oral arguments earlier this month, the court reversed the lower court's decision in his conviction of one of the counts, and sent the case back for re-sentencing on the remaining one. High-speed rail board seeks private-sector ideas, interest on financing, development -- One of the chief criticisms leveled at the California High-Speed Rail Authority over the past couple of years has been the lack of private-sector investment in its ambitious statewide bullet-train program. Those investments were promised to voters in Proposition 1A to make up about one-third of the money needed to build the system.
