Airports grapple with rideshare pickups -- Uber and other rideshare apps are gaining widespread acceptance in managed travel programs, but whether they're legal for airport pickups all depends on the airport. At the CAPA Americas Aviation Summit 2015, airport officials illustrated airports' divergent approaches. Though UberX-style rideshare pickups are technically illegal at Los Angeles International Airport, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has pushed airport officials to work with rideshare companies. Airport police union sends letter to Board of Airport Commissioners correcting record on dynamite incident --  The union representing the sworn police officers and firefighters of the Los Angeles Airport Police Department did not mince words in a tersely written letter to the president of the Board of Airport Commissioners correcting the record on the April 25 incident where a live stick of dynamite was accidentally left unattended at the airport.  LAAPOA News Release/Nixle

Join Van Nuys Airport in a week-long Aviation Academy experience -- Selected students from high school and middle schools will spend a week of their summer vacation traveling Los Angeles County to explore the world of aviation. Hundreds more airport SIDA badges missing -- New information to an ongoing NBC 5 investigation found hundreds of airport security badges, known as Secure Identification Display Area (SIDA) badges, are unaccounted for across the country. Working in partnership with the NBC station in San Diego, NBC 5 Investigates found more than 270 SIDA badges missing at the San Diego International Airport in the last two years. Rare look inside SFO's new control tower -- There's something new rising above San Francisco International Airport, and we're not talking about airplanes. We got a rare look inside the new Air Traffic Control Tower, and the view is hard to beat. Airport officials gave ABC7 News a rare tour of their new tower, which is about 40 feet taller than the old one, as they announced they're done with construction and handing it over to the FAA. British Airways' Austin-London route appears to be a hit -- When British Airways began flying to Austin in March 2014 , the Texas capital became one of the smallest U.S. metro areas to have nonstop service to Europe. Any fears that the region might not be able to support the flight to London can now be put to rest. British Airways confirmed Thursday that it will boost capacity on its London-Austin route starting Oct. 25, switching from a Boeing 787 Dreamliner to a bigger Boeing 777-200. RDU Airport Authority approves launch of long-term planning initiative -- With most of its major construction projects out of the way, Raleigh-Durham International Airport is set to begin the first phase of its long-term planning effort that will chart the airport's course for the next 25 years. The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority approved Thursday a $3.98 million contract with Chicago-based Ricondo & Associates to draft a master plan for the airport over the next 18 months. 2 from O.C. suspected of trying to support overseas terrorist groups -- Federal agents and local authorities arrested two men Thursday night on suspicion of trying to support overseas terrorist organizations after conducting several searches in Orange County, according to law enforcement sources. One man was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport, and the second man was arrested at an undisclosed location in Orange County, according to sources familiar with the investigation. Court suspends prison term for ex-Korean Air exec in 'nut rage' case -- South Korean court Friday suspended the prison term of the former Korean Air executive whose onboard "nut rage" delayed a flight last year, setting the stage for her release from prison. Heather Cho, also known as Cho Hyun-ah, who is the daughter of the airline's chairman, did not violate aviation security law when she ordered the chief flight attendant off a Dec. 5 flight, forcing it to return to the gate at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, according to the Seoul High Court's ruling. AP

Review: Singapore Airlines premium economy seats -- Singapore Airlines' new premium economy seat ticks all the boxes for a 'better than economy' product, with several thoughtful touches showing the amount of consideration that's gone into its design. Woman suing Southwest Airlines after slipping out of wheelchair at Midway Airport -- A woman who slipped out of a wheelchair being pushed by a Southwest Airlines employee at Chicago Midway International Airport in May has filed a lawsuit against the airline and the city of Chicago. Rosemary Hastings filed the negligence lawsuit Thursday in Cook County Circuit Court. On May 17, Hastings was being assisted by a Southwest employee while boarding a flight from Midway Airport to Washington, according to the lawsuit. Ashlee Rezin/Chicago Sun-Times

Aviation agency unveils messaging system to reduce delays -- A system that replaces verbal communication between pilots and air traffic controllers with computerized messages was unveiled Thursday by federal aviation officials, who said the system will reduce delays during weather events and cut down on errors that occur during routine voice transmissions. Challenges ahead for business aviation in Europe -- EBAA CEO Fabio Gamba says business aviation in Europe is adapting to "a new normal" of flatter growth in the wake of the Great Recession, responding to continuing company consolidations, new legal and operational changes imposed by the European Aviation Safety Agency and a shift in the EU's aviation policies and priorities. Operations increased a scant 0.7% in 2014, and in 2015 "we're yo-yoing with results unknown. But it's going to be an exciting year. Aviation Week

Bombardier weighs third CSeries jet model -- Bombardier Inc.'s new commercial aircraft boss said Thursday that it is considering of a third model of its new CSeries jetliner that could compete with the core single-aisle jet offerings from its European and American rivals. Bombardier's current CSeries jets compete with the smallest models from Boeing Co. and Airbus Group NV. Hotel Indigo coming to downtown Los Angeles -- Los Angeles' first hotel under InterContinental Hotel Group's Hotel Indigo badge is scheduled to open next year about a block north of the L.A. Live entertainment district in that city's downtown area. The Hotel Indigo Downtown Los Angeles will be part of the $1 billion Metropolis mixed-use project being built by Shanghai-based Greenland Group. The 18-story hotel will have 350 rooms. Travel Weekly

Los Angeles City Council boosts fire funding, community programs in $8.6 billion budget -- The Los Angeles City Council tentatively adopted an $8.6 billion spending plan Thursday that adds $11.35 million in public safety funding to Mayor Eric Garcetti's original budget proposal for the coming year. The council voted unanimously in favor of the revise for 2015-16 fiscal year, beginning July 1, that takes a small step toward restoring the ranks of city firefighters after it was depleted through a five-year hiring freeze. San Fernando Valley voters backed David Ryu in Council District 4 race -- Voters in the San Fernando Valley helped propel David Ryu to victory over Carolyn Ramsay in Tuesday's election for the Los Angeles City Council District 4 seat. Ryu won at least 55 percent of the Valley votes, according to unofficial results from the city's Election Division. The returns highlight the key role the Valley played in the Ramsay-Ryu runoff. At least one-third of the more than 20,000 votes cast in Tuesday's election for the council seat came from the Valley. DWP cancels couple's $51,269.42 water bill, gives $85 credit -- Oh , about that $51,000 water bill we sent you? Never mind. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has decided after an "investigation" that Savely and Stella Goreshter, who live in a Van Nuys condominium, did not use 6.7 million gallons of water between January and October of last year.
