For most of us, the holidays are experienced as a complex mashup of emotions.   Who among us has not encountered dashed expectations, loneliness and strained relationships amidst the joy of holiday festivities?

Rewire Me presents simple practices for finding balance this holiday season; highlights include performing a walking meditation, taking a mindful shower, and brewing a cup of tea.  


If you tend toward depression, the latest research suggests that exercise may improve your holiday mood.  



For those in recovery from addiction, the holidays can be a particularly trying time of temptation; consistent schedules and recovery practices can give way to bad memories, toxic group dynamics, and old patterns. The following tips for successfully navigating holiday recovery come from  The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation 
  • Host a holiday gathering for recovering friends and/or attend celebrations of your Twelve Step group.  
  • Don't expose yourself to unnecessary triggers, such as gatherings where alcohol is the center of entertainment.
  • Focus on your recovery program.

Caregiving can be a 24/7 job, and compassion fatigue is a constant threat. Whether caring for a parent, sibling, child, partner, or friend, managing through the holidays involves a careful balance between adjusting expectations and asking for help.

The Alzheimer's foundation offers wonderfully practical guidance about familiarizing extended family and friends with the care situation, simplifying holiday traditions, adapting gift-giving rituals, and making time for self-care. 


Iowa State University offers this wisdom gleaned from experienced caregivers:

  • Invite guests to the home of the care receiver so that he or she will be comfortable and not have to be taken out.
  • Suggest a potluck meal or ask guests to take responsibility for preparing a meal. Make clean-up easy by using festive paper plates and cups.
  • Keep the number of guests manageable. Noise and hectic activity can be difficult for a person who is frail or confused.  

Eldercare Link suggests creating a more pleasant environment for all involved by playing soothing music and adjusting lights to a comfortable level.

Since ancient times, thought leaders have extolled the power of gratitude.  Cicero, for example, considered gratitude to be the greatest virtue and the parent of all other virtues.

Now positive psychologists are investigating why and how cultivating gratitude can increase happiness and decrease unhappiness.  


Research reveals that people who are grateful have 10% fewer stress related illnesses, enjoy better relationships, and are more well-liked than those who are not grateful.   As you prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday, here are four empirically proven ways to express gratitude and thanks:


Gratitude visit -  Write and then deliver a letter of gratitude in person to someone who has been especially kind to you but whom you never properly thanked. 


Three good things in life -  Write down three things that went well that day every night for one week.  Write an explanation about the cause of each good thing.


Gratitude journal -  Robert Emmons recommends focusing on depth over breadth; elaborate about a particular thing for which you're grateful.


Prayers of Gratitude --  Emmons notes that in many spiritual traditions, prayers of gratitude are considered among the most powerful because they recognize the ultimate source of all that we are.

Workshops at CCCG



CCCG offers continuing education workshops for professionals.  On December 12th, Dr. Tiffany McNary will  review child developmental milestones as they relate to the activity of play; teach participants theories of attachment and how play therapy is a vital tool in working with children with attachment disorders; and learn how to watch for themes and patterns in children's play and how these themes can be helpful in educating parents about the emotional and developmental needs of their children.

The Mindful Way for Women: Learning Life Strategies in Managing Stress, Anxiety, and Everyday Living - This course is designed to provide you with skills and understanding to empower you to manage life.  This 8-week course meets Saturdays from January 10 - March 14, 2015.  Group meets 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. $45 (some insurance accepted.) Girl Time, Gurl Talk - A group for teen girls providing support and education. Learn how to handle stress, managing feelings and changing moods, and teen self-care practices and routines. Steps of Faith Therapy & Recovery Group
- in Decatur with Edith Anenih. This is an open therapy group comprised of using a biblically based 12-Step Model. This group invites and welcomes persons of different walks who desire to work through the stages of recovery.  Ongoing: Wednesdays 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. $30 per group session. Suicide Prevention Support Group
- with Edith Anenih in Decatur.  A support group for people who have attempted suicide or think about committing suicide for different reasons.This is an open process group that requires an 8 week commitment.
