Spring 2013
URI Compost Workshop Series
Take one or all three classes!
The Breakdown of Compost Additions: Materials to Avoid
Our Speaker, Dr. Robert Rafka, will be discussing ways to ensure the compost you produce is as healthy and contaminant-free as possible. Special emphasis will be given to the proper choices of incoming organic raw materials and the chemical transformations that do and don't occur in your compost pile.
Date: Thursday, March 21, 2013 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
Location: URI Kingston Campus, CBLS rm 10
Price: $20.00
Who Knows What Good (and Evil) Lurks in the Hearts of Compost Piles?
In this lecture Andy Radin, URI Agricultural Extension Specialist, will follow the progression of the diverse assemblage of microorganisms in the life of a compost pile, from intial assembly to a stable, finished product. This involves consideration of who consumes what, under what conditions, and how these dynamic conditions influence the relative abundances of these microbes.
Date: Thursday, March 28, 2013 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
Location: URI Kingston Campus, CBLS rm 10
Price: $20.00
Composting as Part of a Landscape Management Program
In this popular hands-on workshop, Reinhard Sidor will demonstrate hot & cold composting, alternatives to composting, vermiculture, and compost tea. Active participation is encouraged and needed to create and aerate compost piles, spread finished compost on lawns, and to assist with grinding of compost materials.
Bring a 1-gallon bucket to go home with worm tea!
Date: Saturday, May 4, 2013 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Reinhard Sidor Residence (directions will be given during online registration)
Price: $40.00
