Greetings!, "How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world." -Anne Frank These words resonate for me - and for many women. Some very good news about how women put this sentiment into action is reflected in a recent study by the Women's Philanthropy Institute. Women Give 2012 produced three key findings related to the giving behavior of "Boomer" women born between 1946 and 1964: - Baby Boomer and older women are more likely to give than their male counterparts at all giving levels.
- The highest income Boomer women are more likely to give than their male counterparts.
- Boomer women give 89% more than men overall, and the highest income women give 156% more to charity than their male peers.
That women are generous is not news. However, women have tended to earn less, been in the workforce less time and tend to live longer - all factors that would suggest that they have less to give. Yet women are more likely to give and when they do give, give more. That is good news. These findings inspire us to do as much as we can to build economic security for women and girls across Maine through the Maine Women's Fund. Whether in Maine, elsewhere in the US, or around the globe: when women and girls prosper, communities thrive. We celebrate all year that you support this work, and on behalf of the staff, board and grantee organizations of the Fund, we thank you for that support. In this season of celebration - and giving - I hope you will celebrate with us the good news of philanthropy for women, and continue your support of building economic security through the Maine Women's Fund.
Sincerely, Sarah Ruef-Lindquist CEO

MEET NYAWAL
|
In the fall of 2011, Nyawal attended the Girls' Grantmaking Initiative. The workshop paired 30 high-school- aged girls from across the state with a dozen members of the Maine Women's Fund community. The girls reviewed 17 grant proposals and awarded five $1,000 grants. Through fiscal sponsor Living with Peace, the South Sudan Community Development Organization applied to support Nyawal as a teacher in the Naath Language School Program. Every week for eight months, Nyawal taught 30 United States-born Nuer children the Naath-Nuer language, which lacks a proper dictionary or textbooks. She gave children in her community who had little or no understanding of their language, lineage, village life in Sudan, or responsibilities as young Nuer-Americans an opportunity to embrace and sustain their culture. As a participant in the Girls' Grantmaking Initiative, a program exclusive to the Maine Women's Fund, Nyawal was able to make a case for her own cause, practice advocacy and consensus building, and work collaboratively with other girls. A track star, a graduate of Portland High School and the recipient of three college scholarships, Nyawal is now a freshman at the University of Maine at Machias. She is on the cross country team and is dedicated to becoming a public health nurse. As the first girl in her tribe to go to college, Nyawal has set a new standard of achievement for the younger girls in her community.
