Are you experiencing Advent with the eyes of a child? I hope so! Yesterday I received an email picture of my grandson who is nearly 15 months old. The image lit my heart because of the wonder in his face. He was pointing to the lights on the Christmas tree with a rapt and joyful wonder. Oh that we would look to the return of Jesus with hearts filled with that kind of wonder and joy!

I know you are busy today, but do take a few minutes to read John Sheldon's article, "Johnny Jump up!" I think it will enrich your Advent experience.

As you look ahead to the New Year, I hope you will plan a special service for Sanctity of Human Life Sunday on January 19. You can download and print our 2014 SOHLS bulletin insert from the sidebar on the right or if you are in a hurry, just click here.

We love reading the Gospel of Luke's birth narratives at this time of the year. I read these accounts for many years before I realized how profoundly pro-life were their implications. Though this pro-life meaning is not the main point of these texts surely we are right in drawing attention to them in our post-Christian age.  For example, we remember Mary's hurried visit to her cousin Elizabeth within days after Gabriel announced to Mary that she would conceive Jesus by the Holy Spirit.

The young Mary wasted no time in visiting her aged, yet six-month pregnant relative Elizabeth. And why not? Mary had just received the most life-changing news ever given. Who better to share her news with than her cousin Elizabeth . . .

In January, many churches set aside one Sunday to observe the sanctity of human life. The observance coincides with the anniversary of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision by the Supreme Court that legalized abortion in all 50 states. Since that fateful decision over 55 million babies have been aborted in America.

PPL's 2014 bulletin insert focuses on the fathers of babies in unplanned pregnancies. As Christians we ought to encourage, support, and mentor young dads to step into their God-given role as fathers who protect and provide for their child and his/her mother.
